best coach of the least talent pool
Which coach do you think gets the most of his team, year after year, especially in years where their is not a lot of talent to draw on?

I'd say Bill Lechner. Most of his kids come from a public school program and have to be re-taught the game of hockey. When he & his staff go out and evaluate which kids they are going after, they realize they are gonna have to put in a great deal of work to get these kids to play up to the private school standards. This is not easy! What we are seeing now is Lech is starting to put certain coaches in place at various public youth associations to get these kids better prepared when the Hill coaches come around and offer them a place to play. It is amazing the success Lech has had when you take a step back & look at what comes to his door each year. Please public schools, prepare your kids better!

10 points for creativity, 0 points for Lech though...Pioneerprideguy wrote:I'd say Bill Lechner. Most of his kids come from a public school program and have to be re-taught the game of hockey. Lechner?
Didn't realize Hill Murray had it so tough. Imagine having to place and supervise a network of youth coaches all over the Twin Cities and then having to choose only the best players from all those programs. Now that's pressure. Obviously it's alot easier to coach and win in public school programs where you have a much smaller pool of quality players to teach and evaluate.

When Hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there too
Roy Nystrom in Albert Lea. They don't have year around ice (or at least didn't). They're about as far removed (geographically)from the main stream of Minnesota hockey. They annually have one of the best wrestling teams in the state which takes up a lot of boys in a shrinking school. The town is on hard times with Farmstead burning down a couple of years ago, they're not a wash in athletic talent as their football team and baseball teams are among the worst in the Big Nine year after year. What they do in hockey is simply amazing.

I wasn't aware that they played hockey up north, let alone, good hockey. I notified Lech who notified the school administration who will now send their scout team up there. We realize the talent there is still raw, but we feel like with the right coaching, we could make something of it. Thanks for the tips & keep them coming.Neutron 14 wrote:You have to be kidding us with your arrogance. This is what is wrong with private schools and their screwed up thinking. OJ Kennett does a nice job in Red Lake Falls. No there aren't state tournament births, actually winning a play-in game is a pretty successful year. There are routinely only about 22-25 kids in the entire program 10-12 but still manage to put a decent team on the ice for such a small town. They won't win section 8A any time soon but they won't embarass themselves either.
