Great interview
Excellent. Thanks for sharing. He interviews very well. He even came up with good things to say about Virginia and Omaha! (Never been to either, so don't get on my case.)
Be kind. Rewind.

Hastings is a tough coach that demands two way players. Is Nico struggling? I see he has 9 pts in 26 games. In comparison Jack Connelly (Marshall) also 1st yr 36 pts in 26 games. Drew LeBlanc 25 pts in 26 games. Like I say I know Hastings demands two way play and I do believe Nico is probably just that as of now and will start lighting the lamp. Also its tough leaving home for a young kid. Lastly maybe Connelly and LeBlanc played a little tougher schedule against stronger opponents in High School and came in more adjusted to the speed and skills in the USHL? Please give me your thoughts. I am a Nico fan and hope someday he joins Niskanen in Dallas. As Nico said its just a dream now but is working hard and playing the game he loves. Lastly I,m sure there will be those to say theres more to hockey than scoring and they are right. Its just Nico is a pure scorer.

The transition has been tough and Hastings certainly does emphasize both ends of the ice and a defensive minded approach. Omaha is also loaded with junior hockey veterans at forward that are obviously going to be more accustomed to that level and be relied upon more than rookies like Nico. I think Nico will be a better hockey player having gone through this transition and the defensive focus that Omaha has. He'll be more well rounded.

Nico didn't really have to play two-way hockey in high school. He had D1 defensemen behind him in Scott Kishel and Matt Niskanen and the amount of time he spent on the ice almost demanded that he rest while he was on the ice. I think he is still adjusting to playing defensively. Also, I don't think Nico is seeing the same amount of ice time as LeBlanc and Connoly because the Lancers appear to have a much deeper pool of talent to put on the ice. Those are my thoughts...
Puckranger exactly what I thought. We had a local kid play for the Lancers a few yrs back. Same exact thing happened. He was a great High School scorer and Hastings made him a 2 way player. He went on to play D1 on a large part due to the transition. Nico is becoming a 2 way player. What a great thing. Cant wait to have him at the U.

It's really tough to get in a comparison with players and how some are putting up more points, etc. than others. Some players (such as Jack Connelly, Jake Hansen and others) are getting a lot of playing time and are on power play, etc.; some teams play fewer players more while other teams consistently run four lines; and some teams expect all of their players, especially the centers, to play two ways and others seem to expect less of that. As Gopher Blog indicated, Nico is on a team that is stocked with talented, veteran forwards. I have seen Nico play, and while he does not stand out like some might expect, he is working hard and doing just fine. Going from high school to playing in the USHL is a HUGE jump, and for people who have not seen the level of play and the level of talent that every team has, it is easy to assume a player is struggling if they are not putting up big numbers, particularly one that has the talent like Nico and his history of success. Just the fact that Nico is playing in every game, is a big positive. Nico will be just fine and as others have mentioned, will be a better all-around player when he is done.
