I am not aware of that....I was saying JM retired Podein's number (and Zmolek)......some schools don't like to do that for many reasons.
However, I am sure there are some guys who have pictures in their hometown rinks that were not outstanding high school players, but went on to greater things that their high school now touts are 'theirs' - if that makes sense....

He was an assistant to Jeff Whisler.chillout wrote:Oh wow...embarrasing.wbmd wrote:Grew up in Cloquet? How is that? Tim Hambley graduated from White Bear in 2001 and played Bantams in White Bear - meaning he did grow up in Bear land.chillout wrote: Your post is probably sarcastic, but I can't tell. I was thinking of Scott, his dad. Oops.
Oh that's weird Scott coached at Mahtomedi, I had no idea.

Jeff Bandar completely slipped my mind, could very easily be the best goalie in Apollo's history.Goldy Gopher wrote:St. Cloud Apollo
Chris Harrington
Mike Howe
Matt Hartman
Joe Hartman
Nate Hampton
Troy(?) Fritz- goalie for the state tourney team in 84
I'm sure there's more that Blanda would be able to throw in.
The U invented swagger.
anyone remeber Matt Ulwelling or Mark Carlson? i recall watching them play for warroad on the 96 team although i don't know if thats when they graduated. Talk about some skilled hockey players, extremely fast with excellent hands. I know there was some other players from those couple years but im not sure who. maybe some warroad people could elaborate.

Who said they weren't good people? Or good players after HS?SEMinnHockeyNut wrote:Like was said, they blossomed after HS. They were very good players, no doubt, but most of their success came afterward.
Where on this thread does it indicate that they should be the best players ever from your high school during high school????
Simply put, Joel Otto might be the best to ever come out of Elk River because of who he was as a person, not the youth hockey and high school teams.
The same could be said for Shjon Podein of JM. Not very good in high school, but the work ethic to go from average to a nice long NHL career - and that my friends should be noted no matter when the success happened. Of course JM takes some credit for his success - as they should - by retiring his number.
Otto and Hinote deserve the same respect for ER.
I guess I assumed that since the title said best players ever for your school, then it was while they were in school... In my opinion a lot of great HS players get forgotten because they didn't go on to play D1. Either because of size, speed or just didn't want to play after HS, but they were great in HS. Why not recognize them?

Donkey Kong Junior
Nice shot of Otts and Bundy ... played golf with both of them this summer ... in the same foursome as a matter of fact ... Bundy won all the money that day though .... he shot a 68 at the Preserve. His golf simulator is up and running and word on the street is that he will be the best amateur in the Brainerd Lakes Area next summer.

I still have in my possession, quite a few master tapes of some of Hinote's classics as an Elk player, including the overtime thriller at the St. Paul Civic Center against Moorhead (Moorhead won) just before Moorhead took the Elks in 4 OTs in '94 at the NHC.
Nice research though Junior ... something tells me we've met before. Was it Pebble Beach? Or maybe in Nashville at one of Buck Owens' parties.

Couple ER Additions
Not bad on the ER list, Ray, but I might propose a couple others:
D Tryg Sarsland - MIAC Player of the Year at St. John's, blue line rock and offensive threat in HS
F Richie Anderson - Metro Player of the Year
