I am not at all saying these are the top 6. I am just saying these are six seniors I really like. This year is very interesting. With the loss of key players for a couple weeks, will that affect their chances? As much as I believe it is between 2-4 players (that of which I will not say at this point), I believe that as many as 20-25 girls could win it due to the parity in the state this year. There is still plenty of time left for girls to get red hot and lead their team to St. Paul.
I think this and the goalie awards are more of a "career achievement award" than a senior year award, though a strong senior campaign and/or a trip to St. Paul certainly doesn't hurt one's chances! I feel a U18 gold medal should only add to the player's career achievements, not take away from it.

As for my picks, lets just say I'm high on the Gophers recruiting class of 08-09

[quote="keepitreal"]Time to bring this to the top. Your top ten and frontrunner speculation? Anyone missing from the list? A very deep class of great players this year. Criteria includes classroom and community service as well as on-ice leadership and performance; things we're not all privy to but we can recognize the players we've seen do well anyway...

When you look at this list of qualifications Kelly Wild would get my vote. She is a great leader of her school, her community and her team.

If you watched in Canada last week she was also a big contributer to the US Gold Medal.

Lauren Schlichting - Defense - Stillwater
4 years Varsity tutoring under some of the best defenders in the state.
Captain 07-08 Because of her leadership on and off the ice, she takes control of all situations in the locker room and during a game. "No Drama"
Excellent mentor to the younger players on the team. Always willing to cheer her team on and support all her team mates including the JV Team.
Academically she has one of the highest GPA's on the team, Junior ROTC.
She also has a very commanding presence on the ice, her ability to see the entire sheets of ice is overwhelming. Very strong skating, passing, shooting and body position skills. Very rarely does the other team score when she is on the ice. Some what over shadowed by all the other great players she has played with and continues to play with.

Seeler is good. Smith is good. Hannah Montana is over rated badly, E Erickson is good. Kelly Wild is really good. No ones better then the Bemidji Erickson though.

boblee- Where do Daniel Welch and Lauren Smith sit with you? They have to up there, they are two of the most dominating seniors I've seen. Along with Sara Erickson.

I'll bet he's never seen Welch play. GR/G doesn't ever play Hastings. I'll bet he'd say she was in his top 10 though if he did see her :-k

rube, you know your stuff, I like your list, Where do you see Daggit & Green?

Based on pure hockey I think there is a clear cut top 3. Then 9 others that could easily be in the top 5, it will be interesting to see how this one ends up.

I think Nicole Olson from Irondale should be mentioned - she sets up her team mates and is the most unselfish player. She is talented enough to do it herself...but thinks of her teammates - I enjoy watching that whole Irondale team play.

Thanks AH! I tend to try to rate first by those that make players around them better, then by how they dictate the game with in that. Green is a nice strong player, but does she make those around her better, or do those around her make her better? She is close to this top to for sure tallent wise though. Daggit is a great player, highly skilled, aggressive, all of it, just never seen her take her team to that next level like the others here, and the same question here, does she make those around her better?

Crazyfan, I think Nicole Olson is a great player, but near the top ten, not sure?

Don't get me wrong on any of these, I'd take them all if I could, but when you are looking at a top ten, my opinion, you have to over look your bias. I have none for any of these kids mentions here, just seen them play, and like their game, all of them!

Southern Minnesota so this might mean nothing but, Taylor Jenkins is someone I wouldn't count out. She also got her 300th point last week. Solid player just hides South of Lakeville.

I thought IOWA was south of Lakeville?

If you're going with players that make their team mates better, Daggit and Welch would not be on the list. Hear me out, Welch is probably one of the premier players in the state, without question. But, she is a one man force. She is the only one able to bury the puck. If you look at her stats, she only scores, not really a feeding type player. Daggit has done nothing. I've seen her play 3 times in the last two years and am still scratching my head as to all the hype on her. If you're looking for a team player, how about Babineau of Roseville, how about Schwab of Stillwater, Keys of Cretin?

If this characteristic was most important add: Ripley, Burg, Shields-Nordness, McMullen to the list

Lauren Smith is a name I inadvertently left off the list. I have seen her play a few time and she is a great hockey player. I have not seen Welch, but I am sure she is good from everything I hear.

Welch is alot like E. Erickson but is a little thicker across the shoulders and shoots alot harder.

AGREED! Strong and very good skills! And plays both ways! I would have to say it is between her and Seeler. Either way the gophers will be happy with both of them!!!

Welch

Post by bardown10 »

Welch should have a lot more assissts. I have watched a few of their games. She does pass the puck in the Offensize zone but the players around her lack the ability to catch a pass. Then later in the game she always tends to try and carry the whole team on her back, which my opinion she should because she is very talented and the supporting cast is a bit weak.

S Erickson
M Vichorek
E. Erickson
L. Smith
M Feste

My top five. S. Erickson has really matured as a player this year as has Feste.
