Another way to look at peewee A teams (part 4)
Jan 21, 2008
The following summarizes the Districts by top teams and what they have done in the last week (Jan 15 to Jan 21) and what they will be doing this week. I have grouped the Districts into the Regions they will be playing to go to state. I have then ranked the top teams in each region. The top two of each region go to state. The projected state peewee A tourney draw is shown at the end of this post.
North Region (at Cloquet Feb 29 to March 2): Coon Rapids had a quiet week playing only one D10 game, but Cloquet had a banner week and may have turned the corner from the .500 game winning performances in the first half of the season with their taking the Roseau Tourney Championship. Grand Rapids died in that tourney while Elk River stayed home and had two solid games against Eden Prairie and Coon Rapids. The problem the Elks have is that Coon Rapids has a tight grip on the D10 regular season championship and it guaranteed seed with six games to play. If Coon Rapids takes the title, the Elks (and St. Cloud) will have to battle through a tough D10 playoff to get the remaining seed.
1-Coon Rapids*
2-Cloquet*
3-Elk River
4-Grand Rapids
5-Hermantown
North Region is summarized by districts below.
D10 Summary: Coon Rapids has widened their lead over St. Cloud to two games. Each has six games to play. Blaine has narrowed the lead, but still trails by 2 1/2 games. Elk River has two games in hand and still remains a threat. These district ratings are unchanged this week. Still looks like a two team race for the guaranteed seed between Coon Rapids and St. Cloud with Coon Rapids having the edge. Elk River and St. Cloud are so close in rating that they remain as possible #2 Seeds, but St. Cloud plays three league games this week after playing in their own tourney. Can they do it?
D10-#1-Coon Rapids (Last week: tied Elk River 2-2; Coming week: Play Andover).
D10-#2-Elk River (Last week: beat Eden Prairie 2-1 and tied Coon Rapids; Coming week: St. Cloud)
D10-#2-St. Cloud (Last week: played in own tourney, in pool play beat Hopkins 5-0, beat Bemidji 10-0 and beat Rogers 5-1, in Championship semifinal game, lost to Burnsville 1-0 and lost to Jefferson 4-3 in the third place game; Coming week: Elk River, Cambridge/Isanti, and Rogers.)
D11 Summary: Cloquet looks to have found its stride winning the Roseau Tourney by beating three tough ranked teams. Duluth East had a good tourney also, including a tie with Woodbury 2-2 and move to #2. All three D11 teams will be tested by Apple Valley this week.
D11-#1-Cloquet (Last week: played in Roseau Tourney, beat Eden Prairie 5-4 in shootout, beat Roseau 4-3 and beat Grand Rapids 3-2 in overtime in pool play, won the Championship by beating Grafton 4-2; Coming week: play Superior and Apple Valley)
D11-#2-Duluth East (Last week: play in Duluth Tourney, in pool play beat Stillwater 2-1, tied Woodbury 2-2 and beat Eastview 9-1; Coming week: play Duluth Lakers and Apple Valley)
D11-#3-Hermantown (Last week: beat Virginia 5-2; Coming week: play Thunder Bay Kings (twice) and play Apple Valley)
D12 Summary: No change. Grand Rapids remains unchallenged in this district. They returned from tough trip to the cities last week end and a tough trip to the Roseau Tourney to re-group. The Rapids play a league game and a D11 team.
D12-#1-Grand Rapids (Last week: play Hibbing and played in Roseau Tourney. In pool play lost to Roseau 3-2 in overtime, beat Eden Prairie 3-2 and lost to Cloquet 5-4 in overtime, beat Warroad 4-1 for seventh place; Coming week: play Superior and International Falls)
D12-#2-Virginia (Last week: Play International Falls and lost to Hermantown; Coming week: Play in Eveleth Tourney)
D12-#3-Hibbing (Last week: played in Brainerd Tourney previous week, lost to Andover 2-0, beat River Lakes 2-1 and lost to Rosemount 4-0. Play Grand Rapids; Coming week:).
East Region (at St. Louis Park Feb 29 to March 2): Wayzata was beaten by Eagan is the Duluth Tourney this week and Woodbury took the Duluth Tourney Championship and the #1 seed here. Lakeville South lost to Edina, but remained unbeaten in D8. Woodbury won two important D8 games and was looking to take the title, but Eagan may just have walked off with the D8 title. Maple Grove lost something after winning the Hastings Tourney, they ended up with a disappointing St. Cloud Tourney. The D2 teams keep beating each other up each other. There are a lot of good teams in this region, it remains tough.
1-Woodbury*
2-Wayzata*
3-Lakeville South
4-North St. Paul
5-Maple Grove
East Region is summarized by districts below.
D8 Summary: After all is said and done, there will only two teams from D8 going to the East Region. The D8 teams Woodbury and Eagan took 1 and 2 at the Duluth Tourney this week. Woodbury won the Duluth Tourney but got a big favor from Eagan who beat Wayzata in the semifinals. Lakeville South added two league wins and remains unbeaten in D8. The D8 ranking remains unchanged from last week, but this week is Eagan’s week to shine by sweeping their two league games the Wildcats will lock-up the D8 title.
D8 #1-Woodbury (This week: play in Duluth Tourney, beat Duluth East 4-2, beat Eastview 10-1 and beat Stillwater 6-1 in pool play, in semifinals beat Prior Lake 5-0 and beat Eagan 4-2 to take Championship; Coming week: play Rosemount)
D8-#2-Lakeville South (This week: beat SSP/IGH 6-2, lost to Edina 4-0, and beat Sibley 9-2; Coming week: play SSP/IGH and Hastings)
D8-#2-Eagan (Last week: Play in the Duluth Tourney, in pool play beat Duluth Lakers 7-1, lost to Wayzata 5-1, and beat Thunder Bay 6-2, advanced as wildcard and beat Wayzata and lost to Woodbury 4-2 to take second; Coming week: play Lakeville North and Hastings to end league play (6 point sweep will give the Wildcats the D8 Championship).
D3 Summary: Unchanged. Wayzata and Maple Grove play each other in the game that will most likely determine the D3 regular season champ. Both are coming off of disappointing tourneys last weekend, but Maple Grove seems to be really down after a poor outing in St. Cloud. In another key D3 match up, Hopkins and Orono tangle in what could be a preview of the playoff battle for the third seed. Hopkins play seems to be improving, but Orono has played some good games in the past two weeks.
D3-#1-Wayzata (Last week: beat Hopkins 6-0 and played in a Duluth Tourney, beat Thunder Bay 7-3, Eagan 5-1 and Duluth Lakers 7-0, lost to Eagan 5-4 in overtime in semifinals and beat Prior Lake 7-1 for third place; Coming week: play Armstrong, Lakeville South, and the game that means the D3 title, Maple Grove.)
D3-#2-Maple Grove (Last week: Beat Orono 4-3 and lost to Burnsville 4-0, lost to Mpls Park 7-3, and beat Moorhead 8-0 in pool play in the St. Cloud Tourney, and beat Rogers 14-1 in fourth game; Coming week: play Wayzata)
D3-#3-Hopkins (Last week: lost to Wayzata and played Faribault, beat Bemidji 4-0, beat Rogers 7-3, and lost to St. Cloud in pool play in the St. Cloud tourney. In consolation round, beat Mpls Park 7-0 and lost to Minnetonka 4-1 in fifth place game; Coming week: play Orono)
D2 (Playoffs Feb 15 to Feb 24). D2 Summary: on the surface, White Bear Lake and North St. Paul appear to have edged out a small lead over the other teams. The problem is that Moundsview has two games in hand and can catch these two. White Bear Lake is leading the league by 1/2 game with three games to play. Their last three games are against N. St. Paul, Tartan and Moundsview. Forest Lake had a good Rochester Tourney while Roseville stumbled. With the league as balanced as it is, the District 2 play-offs will still be a wild affair.
D2-#1-North St Paul (Last week: Beat Forest Lake 4-0 and beat St. Paul Johnson 11-0; Coming week: play Tartan)
D2-#2-Roseville (Last week: play North Metro and loss to Orono 3-0; Coming week; play Moundsview)
D2-#3-Forest Lake (Last week: lost to N. St. Paul, and in the Rochester Tourney beat Cedar Rapids 8-0, beat S. St. Paul/Inver Grove Heights 6-5, lost to Rochester Red 3-2, and beat Rochester Black 5-4; Coming week: play Mahtomedi).
South Region (at Chaska Feb 29 to March 2): The South Region will be composed of three D6 teams, two D4 teams, and three D1 teams.
1-Edina*
2-Apple Valley*
3-Eden Prairie
4-Mpls Park
5-Faribault
South Region is summarized by districts below.
D6 (Playoffs Feb 9 to Feb 17). D6 Summary: The D6 teams had mixed results this week. Edina took a third shot at beating the 95 Fire and lost again. Eden Prairie went north stopping at Elk River and Roseau and like Robert E. Lee came back licking their wounds. But the D6 contingent in the St. Cloud Tourney was a bright spot taking four of the top five places in a 16 team tourney with Apple Valley beating Burnsville in overtime for the Championship. By winning the title, Apple Valley re-takes the #2 seed this week.
The D6 playoff is a 6 team double elimination tourney. The top 5 teams are seeded; the sixth spot goes to the winner of a three team, three game single elimination playoff. The bottom three teams are eliminated based on league play. Last week settled three of the top five seeds. Edina, Eden Prairie and Apple Valley now have a lock on those three; but Chaska, Jefferson, Burnsville, Prior Lake, and Minnetonka are all in the chase for the remaining two seeds. The first and second place finishers in the league draw a bye in the first round of the double elimination tourney.
D6-#1-Edina (Last week: Beat Lakeville South 4-1 and lost to the Fire 4-2; Coming week: end D6 regular season play by playing Shakopee and Eden Prairie.)
D6-#2-Apple Valley (Last week: Tied Chaska 3-3 and played in the St. Cloud Tourney, beat Alexandria 8-1, beat North Metro 7-1 and tied Grand Forks Sugarkings 3-3, beat Jefferson 3-2 in overtime and beat Burnsville 4-3 in overtime; Coming week: play Chaska, Cloquet, Duluth East and Hermantown)
D6-#3-Eden Prairie (Last week: Lost to Elk River 2-1 and played in Roseau Tourney, lost to Grand Rapids 3-2, lost to Cloquet 5-4, beat Roseau 4-3 and lost to TRF 2-1; Coming week: end D6 regular season play by playing Kennedy, Burnsville and Edina.)
D4 Summary: D4 is combined with D8, but not for playoffs. Faribault and Mankato, and New Prague are close. Faribault remains unbeaten in league play. They get the #1 seed again this week by virtue holding the bragging rights over Mankato. Mankato had a good Rochester Tourney. New Prague played two league games, but these teams remain too close to call at this point. They are rated equal this week.
D4-#1-Faribault (Last week: Lost to Orono 5-4, Played in Willmar tourney played New Ulm, Marshall, and beat Willmar 8-0; Coming week: play Northfield and play in own tourney (Des Moines, Waterloo, Red Wing, Fond du Lac (Wisconsin), and New Richmond (Wisconsin).
D4-#2-New Prague (Last week: tied Northfield 1-1 and beat Albert Lea 7-3; Coming week; Redwood Falls and Marshall)
D4 #2-Mankato (Last week: Played in Rochester Tourney, lost to S St. Paul/Inver Grove Heights in opener 6-5, lost to Cedar Rapids 4-0, beat Luverne 6-0 and lost to Champlin Park 4-3 in shootout in the Carlson Tourney championship game; Play Mason City)
D1 Summary: The league is tightening as the end of league play draws near. Irondale leads in points, but only has one league game left. Mpls Park has two games and can over take Irondale, but they have to sweep both games. Highland and Washburn have four games left each, but are unlikely to catch the top two. These two teams may end up chasing for the third seed. Mpls Park’s victory over Maple Grove was a pleasant surprise for D1 teams, Irondale now carries the flag against Moundsview in another test for D1. By virtue of winning their key match up with Highland this week, Irondale takes over the #2 seed.
D1-#1-Mpls Park (Last week: played in St. Cloud Tourney, lost to Burnsville 6-1, beat Maple Grove 7-3 and tied Moorhead 3-3 to take the #2 pool seed, and lost to Hopkins in consolation round; Coming week: play St. Paul Johnson).
D1-#2-Irondale (Last week: tied Como 0-0, lost to Washburn 4-2 and beat Highland 4-2; Coming week: play Moundsview)
D1-#3-Highland (Last week: lost to Irondale and beat Como 7-0; Coming week: play Washburn)
West Region(at Brainerd Feb 29 to March 2): Roseau, to their credit, set up a tough four team pool in their own tourney this week. The result was 5 of the 6 games were settled by one goal, three of the games went to overtime and one to a shootout. Roseau was on the losing end in pool play. Little Falls has become the #1 team in D15. Moorhead had a tough St. Cloud tourney winning only one game and has fallen out of contention. EGF a contender and get one of the seeds this week. Fergus Falls falls to fifth.
1-Roseau*
2-Little Falls*
3-Mound Westonka
4-TRF
5-EGF
West Region is summarized by districts below.
D5 (Playoffs Feb 17 to Feb 24). D5 summary: Sartell has snuck into the D5 playoff picture by tying Buffalo for second. The race for D5 regular season championship and a guaranteed trip to Brainerd will be one of now top three teams. Mound Westonka leads the league and remains a favorite to take the title, but each of the three teams controls their own destiny since these three teams will play a “mini” three team pool within league play in the last few weeks of the regular season. The D5 playoff format automatically seeds the conference winner in to the Region. Sartell is added this week in a virtual tie with Buffalo for #2.
D5-#1-Mound Westonka (Last week: beat Crow River 8-0, beat MAML 6-1 and St. Micheal/Albertville 5-2; Coming week: play Willmar)
D5-#2-Buffalo (Last week: Played in the Thief River Falls Tourney, lost to TRF 8-1 in the opener, beat MAML 6-5, beat Litchfield 5-2; Coming week: play Sartell and River Lakes).
D5-#2-Sartell (Last week played in St. Cloud Tourney lost to Minnetonka, Jefferson, Fargo Flyers before beating Alexandria; Coming week: play MAML and Buffalo)
D15 summary: Little Falls has emerged as the top team here. Coming off their winning the Hermantown tourney, they beat their nearest D15 competitor badly. That combined with Moorhead’s dismal showing in the St. Cloud Tourney puts them in control of this district. Moorhead falls out of the top three, being replaced by Brainerd.
The D15 playoffs are a 6 team double elimination format. D6 uses the same format, only this year with 6 peewee A teams in the D15, no team will play an elimination game. But the number #1 and #2 seeds will draw byes. The playoff draw with regular season winding down, as of today, would look like this: Brainerd #4 vs Detroit Lakes #5 with the winner playing Little Falls #1; and Moorhead #3 vs Alexandria #6 with the winner playing Fergus Falls.
D15-#1-Little Falls (This week: beat Fergus Falls 8-0: Coming week;)
D15-#2-Fergus Falls (This week: played in the Thief River Falls Tourney, beat Mandan in opener 5-4, lost to TRF 7-4, beat Fort Francis 5-2 and lost to Fort Francis 6-4, played Brainerd and lost to Little Falls; Coming week: play Fargo Raiders)
D15-#3-Brainerd (because as the host to D3 playoffs, they may get an automatic seed)
D16 Summary: Roseau looks to be the best. The TRF after winning its own tourney, had a good Roseau Tourney and moves up a notch to #2. They could be interesting. EGF continued to play well by beating the Grand Forks Wheatkings, but will need to step up if TRF continues to win.
D16-#1-Roseau (Last week: played in their own tourney, in pool play lost to Cloquet 4-1, beat Grand Rapids 3-2, and lost to Eden Prairie, beat Crookston in fifth place game; Coming week: Play Hallock, Bemidji and Crookston)
D16-#2-TRF (Last week: beat Buffalo 8-1, Jamestown (North Dakota) 5-1, Fergus Falls 7-4 and Mandan (North Dakota) 13-6 to win the tourney championship, played in Roseau Tourney losing to Grafton, beating Crookston and Warroad and then beating Eden Prairie; Coming week: Play Grand Forks Wheatkings and LOW)
D16-#3-East Grand Forks (Last week: lost to Devils Lake 4-0 and beat the Grand Forks Wheatkings 3-2).
Projected State Tourney Team draw, W1 versus S2, N1 versus E2, S1 versus West 2 and E1 versus N2
Roseau vs Apple Valley (tough week for Eden Prairie)
Coon Rapids vs Wayzata (Wayzata dropped a notch)
Edina vs Little Falls (no change)
Woodbury vs Cloquet (Woodbury climbed a notch)

Woodbury vs Cloquet (Woodbury climbed a notch)

fred- great post. one thing the ep game with cloquet would go down as a tie since it was a shootout lose. the other thing id like to say is cloquet really does impress showing some serious stamina to go through that bracket without a lose.

F61 great job...Here is a little bit of an addition to your post on your summarization of the Dist.'s: In Dist. 10 play do not leave out the possibility of Blaine taking the #2 spot. Elk River's season ending schedule is tougher than Blaine's or St. Cloud's. Elk River still faces Coon Rapids, St. Cloud and Blaine. In the standings Blaine has 40 points with 17 games played vs. Elk River with 34 points with 14 games played and St. Cloud 16 games played with 37 points. It is going to come down to head to head games. Which teams wins/losses are going to affect the final standings. Coon Rapids plays Elk River this Friday the outcome will have a huge impact on the standings. If, Coon Rapids wins/ties looking at the remaining regular season games they play should lock up the championship, otherwise it will be down to head to head games.

Thanks again for the information. I will note that next week. When I saw Cloquet play in the Eden Prairie Tourney at Thanksgiving, I thought #10 was one of their better players, how did he do in the tourney?watchdog wrote:fred- great post. one thing the ep game with cloquet would go down as a tie since it was a shootout lose. the other thing id like to say is cloquet really does impress showing some serious stamina to go through that bracket without a lose.

EGF lost to the GF Wheatkings 3-2 but I was told by several people that both teams played bad.D16-#2-TRF (Last week: beat Buffalo 8-1, Jamestown (North Dakota) 5-1, Fergus Falls 7-4 and Mandan (North Dakota) 13-6 to win the tourney championship, played in Roseau Tourney losing to Grafton, beating Crookston and Warroad and then beating Eden Prairie; Coming week: Play Grand Forks Wheatkings and LOW)
D16-#3-East Grand Forks (Last week: lost to Devils Lake 4-0 and beat the Grand Forks Wheatkings 3-2).
TRF lost to the Wheatkings 9-5 last night. Both the goalies did not look very good. The play was controlled by GF for the most part although TRF has a couple of kids that can skate and move the puck up the ice.
The Wheatkings have a couple of smaller defensemen that #8,14 and 18 were able to skate around easily.
On thing for sure is D10 is still open with Coon Rapids losing to Blaine and tying ER.Nobodyonya wrote:F61 great job...Here is a little bit of an addition to your post on your summarization of the Dist.'s: In Dist. 10 play do not leave out the possibility of Blaine taking the #2 spot. Some good head to heads this week starting tomorrow night. Still hard to say with such a disparity in number of games each has played (ER is behind in games so can quickly make up ground with wins or vice a versa).
Hate to say it, but the Fair Play point is becoming more critical all the time with these close Districts.

I agree with you that the Elk River/Coon Rapids game will have an impact on the league standings. The Elks need it to open the door for a narrow chance to win the top spot. But the Elks also need to take care of St. Cloud at St. Cloud on Wednesday. A loss to either team would close the door on first.Nobodyonya wrote:F61 great job...Here is a little bit of an addition to your post on your summarization of the Dist.'s: In Dist. 10 play do not leave out the possibility of Blaine taking the #2 spot. With a win over the Rapids, the Elks would have a shot at an identical record with the Rapids. However, if both teams win out, their records would be an identical 17-2-3 in league play. Since the Rapids hold a two point edge in "unfairplay" points and they would win the title.

Frederick, now that you have a projected draw, what about the teams that are in it. Strengths, weaknesses, chances of advancing. Who do you like?Projected State Tourney Team draw, W1 versus S2, N1 versus E2, S1 versus West 2 and E1 versus N2
Roseau vs Apple Valley (tough week for Eden Prairie)
Coon Rapids vs Wayzata (Wayzata dropped a notch)
Edina vs Little Falls (no change)
Woodbury vs Cloquet (Woodbury climbed a notch)

You are right if both teams are tied in point totals (including "unfairplay" points) at the end of the season, then the tie breaker is head to head competition including "unfairpoints" won or lost in the head to head.Nobodyonya wrote:F61....Correct me if I am wrong. If Elk River beats Coon Rapids Friday and they both end up with identical records at season end doesn't Elk River wind up being the league champ as they were the head to head game winner vs. "unfair points"?
My point is if both teams end up at 17-2-3 by winning all their remaining points, then Coon Rapids wins in point total because they currently hold a two point advantage (15 to 13) over Elk River in "unfairplay" points.

Fred- While I do enjoy your information, I got a little bothered by your "EP is licking the wounds comment"
Just a little reminder for you, in thier last 13 games they are 8-3-2. They have beaten APPLE VALLEY, Chaska, Edina, Minnetonka, Roseau, Lakeville South, Jefferson, Centennial. Tied the 95 Fire (which no other PW team has beaten or tied), Tied Cloquet, had GR down 2-1 with 2 minutes to play - lost 3-2, lost a very flukey game 2-1 to TRF - lost to Wayzata. So please don't try and count them out just yet - Yeah the "wounds" will heal and they will come back stronger than ever.

This is for Fred 61. I like all that you do & was wondering if you know, I was wondering how they come up with District 6 gets 3 teams in regional Tourney. They only have 14 teams and other Districts are bigger. I don't understand why they would play D1 & D4 these districts are struggling and I think it makes a easy road to the state tourney for them. Have any D1 OR D4 Teams beat any D6 Teams this year in any game/ scrimmage this year? What go's into how Districts are scheduled.
I see many people on here talking competition and D6 is too much for D1 & D4

I wasn't trying to say D1 & D4 don't belong. I was looking at rankings and the best team in D4 is Faribault 45 ranked team , Mpls Park is 55th ranked. I just want to know how District 6 takes 8 teams in playoffs and 3 get to go to regionals. Thats all the question is. Not trying to put down D4 & D1Love2skate2 wrote:nuttin wrong with d1 and d4 i tink the are pretty good

He can answer what his favorite team is, if he wants too.
But since there are 7 teams in D6 ranked in the TOP 20. 5 of which are in the Top 12 - It makes for one of the best and hardest Districts in the state..Not THE best, but certainly one of them.
D1 & D4 don't have a team ranked until around 40th or something. Does that mean they won't win..? Of course not. I
It's a brand new season when playoffs start - Anyone can win. District 6 playoffs are brutally tough, though.
Hey Love2skate2 - Learn how to spell!

The Regional Schedule and State Tourney is preset for four years by Minnesota Hockey. The current regional and state tourney draw was printed in the Minnesota Hockey "Handbook" two years ago.CoachJ wrote:.watchdog wrote:the humor fred uses to discribe teams current situations adds alot to reading his post.. so leave em alone!!!! ep has a fine team that had a tuff week its no big deal. i just like the fact that its a dog fight in peewee division this year with no clear dominator for the title.

I see many people on here talking competition and D6 is too much for D1 & D4
This is the second year of the four years scheduled. Each Regional Tourney District entries are set in that schedule (for example, 2008 South Regional will have D6/D1/D4. These alignments are rotated every year and next years South Regional will have different districts.
The number of entries each district has to the regionals is set also. The number of entries is rotated each year so that all districts will send two teams once every four years. This year D6 has three, I believe next year they will have two.
The Minnesota Hockey "handbook" has the schedule in it. It also has the regional draws (called Red Pool and Blue Pool) set and the state tourney draw set (by Regional Seeds #1 and #2).
This year D6 has the advantage in the South Region, but the way the Regional works, at least one D1/D4 team will play one game to win and have a shot at going to the state on a Sunday at the Chaska Arena.
I believe that peewee hockey is fun for the kids and they develop. Like anything kids do, some work hard in the summer and have an advantage as the season starts. But kids continue to develop and teams develop and this advantage can be narrowed.
If you look closely at the scores, the gap between teams have narrowed in Jan. I would point to Mpls Park beating a good Maple Grove team 7-3 in the St. Cloud tourney last week as an example. So who knows? That is why the game is played.
As to how the districts playoffs are scheduled, most of the District playoff formats have been constant for the past 20 years. D6 has and, I believe, D8 has. Both Districts want a double elimination approach to determine their seeds. Others such as D5 and D10, give a seed to the regular season championship. Most of the district playoff formats haven't changed in years. They have almost become part of each districts traditions.
