No, not anything that someone could find offensive, but swearing. Swearing AT players is what's being discussed.
All my post is saying is that I don't agree refs should be allowed to resort to respectful behavior/actions/words and justify it because the players are doing it. Nothing more.
To respond to your comment about "tattle tailing", I don't agree with that. Just like pushing, checking, tripping, etc behind their backs, same goes for name calling/swearing, unfortunately. But anything observed by the refs/heard should be called. The refs also shouldn't be able to use that language.
Good point about not knowing what was said. Knowing that could change quite a bit.

It obviously can't be written without being taken off the board but I will give you the jist. With less that a minute to go (00:35 to be exact) a Mayo player gets in the face of Wests goalie (still a little tension from the previous scuffle) and a whistle was blown. Face off in the West zone and the boys are coming over to the circle. The ref sees a West kid smiling at a Mayo kid who is talking smart (not swearing). The ref tells the boys "If you don't knock that S--- off, I'm gonna toss you too.", then he tells the West kid to stop smiling. I think he really lost his cool and it was uncalled for. I have read several people posting that the bad example was set a long time ago but is that really something we want to continue?HShockeywatcher wrote:No, not anything that someone could find offensive, but swearing. While I don't agree with Goldy313's view of the game, (the players actions were a little exaggerated by him, I would like to hear what other peoples views were, Davey?) I agree that the ref could have sent the kids to the locker room for the last :30 seconds if he felt they were being too much of a problem. But, like it was stated before, the game was out of control as soon as thet put their whistles in their mouths.
Not meaning to point any fingers here or knock anyone, but here are some truths -
Been on the ice against West. West talks too much. They talked too much when they were young and lost a lot of games. I can only imagine how much they talk now that they are winning all the time. It's their m.o. Love it or hate it, it's true.
Not condoning the refs actions, but this is not Juniors, it's not college, and it ain't the pros.
5 foot 6 inch 150 pounders talking smack for 51 minutes gets old. If their coach won't tell them to shut up, maybe a ref or two feels he has to. It's easy to control a game where everyone plays with respect for the opponent and keeps their mouth shut for the most part. It gets tougher the more chirping that is allowed.
We were taught to play hard and let the scoreboard decide who's best. Some people can't do that.

There are a lot of teams like that. Some worse than others. But reffing can get out of hand. It seems like it's really hard to get good unbiased refs. I do think that refs should call guys for trash talk, it ruins the whole game. I'll admit that I sometimes do it to, but it's hard not to say something when a guy just yammers at you the whole game, and it really takes my head out of the game, which is what they are trying to do. Wayzata is the worst I have played in a long time, they have a lot to say. the low road seems to be most guys easiest path.Edger wrote:Not meaning to point any fingers here or knock anyone, but here are some truths -

Holyrider, are you kidding?
And for the rest of you thinking the officials should call each offense for swearing, how many of you have been on the bench during a HS hockey game? There would be no one left to play...
No doubt there are officials that can screw up a game. I don't know any of them by name, but it seems that a few of you do. If these people are so bad at calling games, don't you think their associations would have heard it by now? I don't mean from the parents that think their player got tripped without a call being made, but if the "scheduling body" hears consistently Jon Doe is making the same mistakes over and over from different coaches, they would be gone?
I have seen that happen, and it deals with less than acceptable game calling.

There is a ref that refs in Red Wing and he is brutal. He confronts the players and swears at them at every chance. The guy that the fans came to watch him. Before the game started, rink attendants were telling us how horrible this ref was and boy were they right.
The guy had glasses and a nasty looking beard/go-tee, not sure what it was and he was tall and very ugly looking guy.
Watch out for this guy in Red Wing.

West is good! And apparently they know it! I have no problem with kids chirping back and forth, its just part of the game!
Wait a minute, this is all because of him telling hte kids to knock that PLEASE BAN ME off? Jesus this is worse than I thought!!! Somebody come arrest this man!HolyRider wrote:It obviously can't be written without being taken off the board but I will give you the jist. This is getting even more ridiculous by the post. Yes, he should try to watch his mouth but he didnt even really swear at the kids, he told them to knock it off or he would toss them... I bet you would be the guy in the stands complaining about hte game getting out of hand too right? He did his job in keeping the game under control. Maybe he didnt use the best word choice but he kept the game under control... QUIT WHINING!
A service dog that can skate! Now I would pay to see that. Now if it could also be an attack dog for when the kids swore, the refs wouldn't have to try to speak the player's language.theref wrote:I don't know. refs
Who were these ref's? I have a good idea but would like someone to tell me. There are a few in the southern minnesota ref's assn that seem to think they are the center of attention. Refs need to know that they are just there watching to make sure it won't get out of control and not to control the game. Let the kids decide who wins it. A ref swaring at a kid has just lost control himself, someone should have reported it. Not to bring up the respect part of it.

was @ this game and many other with the same ref. he was bad. to say west is cheap, not the issue, west is hard nosed, fast and physical. mayo got away with at least three "cheap" shots that sent one to the locker room for the rest of the year and two under the helmet shots that resulted in blood. all with no penalty.

TomAss, it was a real bugger trying to find some Vapors for the pooch. He does pretty well though! Likes to snag the puck when it goes by him though.
Re: Reporting Unprofessional Refs
Your team lost, cause I'm quite sure if they won we wouldn't be hearing this discussion, and the ref called someone a bad name. Big deal, get over it.HolyRider wrote:I attended the Mankato West v.s. I know the kids were jawwing back and forth but then tell them to knock it off or send em off the ice. This ref decided swearing at them was a better idea. It was loud enough that everyone in that end of the arena heard it.
I am wondering if this is common for Refs to swear at the kids and I am blowing this out of proportion or if this is something that can and should be reported?

Re: Reporting Unprofessional Refs
For the people who think I am whining, please read the first post that I made. I ask a simple question...whether or not it is common for a ref to swear at the kids during a game. (Newsguy, I am disappointed you read my 1st post.) Hate to tell you but the game was out of control long before this happend. 61ache, my team is West, they won.61ache wrote:Your team lost, cause I'm quite sure if they won we wouldn't be hearing this discussion, and the ref called someone a bad name. I've decided that it was very unprofessiona on the part of the ref and that he did lose control and should not have directed that language at the players, it only antagonized them more.
So let me get this straight. One minute you are HolyRider. The next you are TheCaptain? Not sure which personality I am writing to this time, but suffice it to say, you can’t now claim absolution on stirring this pot and whining.
