New 1 AA section seedings

I would agree with all of the above. It sure is sad to see a school with so much tradition fall so far so fast.goldy313 wrote:"What happened to JM?"
1) Rochester youth hockey being nepotistic and short sided.
2) blatant recruiting by a certain group, including RYHA coaches
3) a hatred of a former coach by a bunch of board memebrs
4) demographics
I'm going to start referring to 1AA as section 1 Tier II, because that's about what it really is.
1- Owatonna 14-2. No other team in the section will end the season with 14 wins.
2-Lakeville South 6-9-2, beat North
3-Lakeville North 5-9-3, beat Mayo
4-Mayo 9-8, by default over Century. I doubt they end up over .500 either.
5-Century 4-11-1, they have the easiest part of their schedule left and should gain on Mayo
6-Farmington 6-11, beat Winona
7-Winona 7-8, beat JM & DC
8-John Marshall 2-15, name has to get you something
9-Dodge Cty 4-12
It's as weak a section as I've ever seen since the 2 class split and it's the first time that not only is 1A the better section but it's better by a longshot. Owatonna is the only team I'd put in the top 7 in 1A. Century could go up or down depending on their games with Winona and Mayo. Mayo probably can't do better than 4th unless North beats South. Farmington needs a couple of wins and could pass Century, if Winona beats Century then they both pass Century dropping the Panthers to 7th.

Lakeville South travels to Mayo Tuesday for a really important game in 1AA. Mayo is fading and coming apart at the seams and really needs a win. They lost Yaggy as he was ejected at West on Saturday, I think this might give Mayo something to rally behind and Steinmetz is a fine goalie in his own right. If, and this is a real big if, Mayo finds their discipline they should win. Their not that far away, too many stupid penalties and too much laziness in their own end are keeping them down, all of which should have hit home at West Saturday. They need to figure out that hockey is a team game, not an individual sport.
A Lakeville South win could move them closer to getting the top seed, it is a long shot given their 7-10-2 and Owatonna is 14-4 but Owatonna plays a schedule made up of largely class A teams and poor AA teams while South plays nearly all AA teams and good AA teams at that. If South beats Mayo and gets to .500 it would be tough not to give them the top seed. They probably need Owatonna to drop a game to Mayo or Century along the way as well, ut that's another story.

I guess Mayo catches a break with the weather since now Yaggy will sit out the Austin game Thursday.
This is a huge game so I hope they can reschedule it sometime soon.
If ever there was a must win for the Spartans, this is it. They simply must beat Lakeville South to improve their seed (I know a far cry from the #1 seed I predicted a couple of weeks ago).
I still think they are a team that is good enough to win this section - it will probably be whatever team has the hottest goalie and gets enough scoring. Any of the top five teams - LS, LN, Owatonna, Mayo, or Century can win this section.
Some keys I think to winning the section, but not necessarily in this order:
1) Goaltending - LS has the advantage, along with Century and Mayo; however, LN and Owatonna are not hurt much in this catergory.
2) Scoring - Mayo and Owatonna - seem to get more scoring from a variety of people - especially if Mayo gets scoring from their 2nd/3rd lines.
3) Seeding - Owatonna, LS, LN (as of now). This doesn't rate much because it will mean little more than last change in the semis/final.
4) Venue - Century and LN. North plays well in the building and it is Century's home ice.
5) Intangibles (from team play, to work ethic, coaching, luck, etc) - LN, Century, Owatonna - maybe not in that order.
6) Stretch drive - TBD to see who is playing well down the stretch, using their talents, playing with intensity.

I think the rule is that you have to miss the game that was next scheduled, therefore Yaggy would have miss the make up game with lakeville on friday because it was originally the next scheduled game... I'm not 100% thoughSEMinnHockeyNut wrote:I guess Mayo catches a break with the weather since now Yaggy will sit out the Austin game Thursday.

It certainly isn't the Section 1 or Region 1 of days gone by, with Jefferson, Kennedy, Lincoln, B'ville, AV, JM, Mayo...goldy313 wrote:I'm going to start referring to 1AA as section 1 Tier II, because that's about what it really is.

Yes this is a weak section, but these teams are better than a Lakeville team of 3-5 years ago that was about 6-15 and going to state. Although that may be the case again this year...

Just maybe......
Just a little info..... If you remeber back a few years the Owatonna Bantam A team went to state 2 years in a row w/ 10 skaters each year. These kids can win, and do going down the stretch!

south and north are clearly the 2 best and if they do make it state either one of these teams could steal a game from someone besides edina or roseau as they have already shown

Because both teams do a good job of not giving up alot of goals. South does it with Hakan and North does it with team defense and two very solid goalies. Though in my opinion they have to pick one of them soon to ride the rest of the way. They cant have a goalie rotation like they did last year in the playoffs.

My bad, SEMinnHockeyNut, you were correct, Yaggy will only miss the Austin game tonight and will be able to play their game against Lkvile.GinosAreGood wrote:I think the rule is that you have to miss the game that was next scheduled, therefore Yaggy would have miss the make up game with lakeville on friday because it was originally the next scheduled game... Tonight South and Mayo tied which I think only hurts LS. They were looking to push for a 1 seed with Owatonna and if they had beaten Mayo and then at least tied LN I think they would have been given the 1. Now though I see it shaping up like this...
1-Owatonna (theyre going to win too many games to not give them the 1)
2/3-LS/LN (South beat North so they have the slight edge right now but Souths win over Century is less impressive than Norths win over Mayo (who I think is better than Century) therefore it all comes down to the next North/South game. the winner is the 2 and the loser is the 3)
4-Mayo
5-Century

Section 1AA Standings
Owatonna (65.7) 6 0 0 14 4 0
Rochester Mayo (46.6) 5 3 1 11 9 1
Winona (44.4) 2 3 0 9 9 0

Rochester Century (46.9) 2 3 1 5 12 1
Dodge County (35.1) 0 3 0 4 14 2
Rochester John Marshall (22.7) 1 6 0 4 16 0
OK, first column is record vs. other 1AA teams, second column is overall record. (Number in ( )'s is qrf from minnesota-scores.net) Obviously, the 2 Lakeville schools play a tougher schedule in the Lake. The Big 9 is down, but Owatonna is undefeated vs. the section as of today (2/2) Mayo could have really laid a claim to the #2 seed if they could have hung on last night.
I think Owatonna might be the 1, followed L'ville South, then Mayo and L'ville N. The next two weeks will clear it up more, I'm sure. Here are the big games coming up the rest of the year in the Big 9:
Tuesday 2/5
Rochester Mayo at Owatonna
Winona at Rochester Century
2/9
Rochester Century at Owatonna
2/14
Owatonna at Winona
Rochester Mayo at Rochester Century
Some of the major players in this section from the Big 9 also play Albert Lea, Mankato East, and So St. Paul, which could help/hurt their overall record. The two Lakeville schools could help themselves by upsetting a big Lake powerhouse too. Should be interesting down the stretch!
Although this section is weak, the semi's and finals should be highly entertaining and passionate. Unfortunately, at State, they will play one of the top 4 seeded teams.

With all the seedings that go on, someone please tell me how the previous seedings that are listed go?
Owatonna = 1st, who have they played?? anyone??
Mayo = 2nd, they lost to Lake-north, and tied Lake-So
Winona = 3rd, Really????
Then Lake-So and Lake-North for 4th & 5th seed.
It really looks like Big Nine doesn't respect the 2 Lakeville schools, we'll see. With the strength of the Lake Conf. Lakeville schools should get no worse than 1,2 or 3rd seeds.

Lakeville South is 2-0-1..undefeated in inter sectional games including a win over north and a tie @ mayo....but they are the 4 behind both north and mayo? I don't see how that is possible.Lucia4President wrote:1- Owatonna

Owatonna beat both Mayo and Century which is more rthan either Lakeville school can say at this point. Century and Mayo play each other and the winner should be seeded ahead of the other, South and North play each other and a South win obviously puts them ahead of North. Owatonna is the clear #1 now, but a loss to Mayo or Century puts that in jeopardy, a loss to both should sink them behind Mayo, Century , and the Lakeville schools. Owatonna needs to win both, their schedule is just so bad that they need those games.
1-5 will be, in some order, Lakeville S., Lakeville N., Century, Mayo, and Owatonna. I don't think anyone from that group has been elimanated from the #1 seed yet. Seeds 6-9 are pretty much set; Farmington, Winona, JM, and Dodge Cty and won't change, although if Winona upset Century that would change and Century would drop dramatically.

SECTION 1 AA PICK IT UP BOYS
Owatonna has played Albert Lea twice 1-1 and Lourdes great game actually out played them for two periods.
I think both Albert Lea and Lourdes could win section 1 AA with a little luck.
Maybe the team that is the Cl-A runnerup should play the AA winner and see who should go to state.
The old back door section. As long as Rochester Lourdes recruits the best kids in Rochester or trys to they should probably opt for Cl AA status in Hockey. That would be the best for the AA section.
I think Owatonna is a nice team but they are about even with Lourdes and AL and Red Wing and New Prague and Mankato West beat them badly on a bad night for Owatonna.
Lakeville South has some very talented players Brandon and Jake Binder Billy Simon Hakan Yumsaklar Josh Hofstad Chris Cass. They are so balanced out that no consistant scoring line to depend on. Good Goaltender. Thought Brandon Binder had a very good game on Friday night.
Lakeville North has some very good players Good Goaltending.
Lack consistant performance.
I don't know what Century has done to get any thought of being a top 4 seed. Mayo has really slid lately some terrible last minutes to games.
Seem to be unable to stay out of the box.
Owatonna beat em Albert Lea beat em Mankato West beat em.
Hard to say they should be above the Lakeville schools.
Heck they didn't win a draw the whole game against South.
That is about competing.
Thauwald Yaggy Fisher Anderson Webber and Alexander are all players that have a future if they get to work.
I think that whoever wins will have to change from how they are currently playing if they expect to compete at the State Tourney.
Owatonna has some good forwards some good D and two good goaltenders.
Grant Paulson has made nice progress Korby Anderson Ryan Kalan Zach Radtke Kyle Kozelka all played good games vs Lourdes the other night.
My favorite upcoming player is Matt Snorek he is fun to watch.
Good Luck to all the boys and lets pick it up down the stretch and in the playoffs so we can represent our area in a way that we should.
