No, the Rockies didn't
win the World Series, PB, but according to your post, I didn't know that's the criteria we were debating. The Rockies don't sign free agents either, but they've
been to a World Series. Is it the ideal way to get there? Probably not, but it can be done - and when it happens it may continue. There just has to come a point where you ride with the horses you've got, and you and I will agree that if you're only going to develop players on a 4 or 5 year cycle, only to let them leave, it's not effective. The Rockies did it the right way.
The Twins have to turn these guys into quality major leaguers, lock them up to deals before they get priced out of their range and run with it. If they can start doing that (and there are finally some signs they may try it with Morneau and Cuddyer being locked up), they can make a prolonged run. Ideally, I think this is a better way to go than signing a mid-range free agent for a couple of years for a short term spark (I know it was a trade, but Shannon Stewart is a good example). No matter what happens, I don't see the Twins being players in the "A List" free agent market as long as the Pohlads own them.
