I always get a kick out of how misinforming the Star Trib is when listing goalie stats.

Hakan and Morgan are both have over 900 minutes and are not listed due to gaa.

Hakan at 2.94 and morgan at 2.70

Both these guys have just above a 90 Save % which means they are seeing 29.4 (Hakan) and 27 (Morgan) Shots per game respectivly.

Cashetta and Phillipi are listed
they too have over 900 Min

Cashetta with a 1.74 Gaa and Phillipi with a 1.59 Gaa
Coupled with save % Cashetta at 91.9 and Phillipi at 92 indicates they are seeing 19 to 20 shot respectivly pergame.

While these guys certianly deserve recognition they are listed next to guys who have played less then 500 Minutes and have seen less the 300 shots.

Makes no sence and neglects the Metros top performers.
I will never understand why goalies are ranked based on their gaa...makes no sense at all....it is completely a team stat.

Rankings goalies like this is like rankings forwards and defenseman solely on +/-.

would everyone still be in favor of Morgan if he let up 5-10 goals against Burnsville or Jefferson

After yumusaklars performance last night vs rosemount...I'd put him as the front runner.

Both goalies played well in this game. Morgan got left hanging by his D a few times in the first and gave up one on a 5 on 3. Yumo got sniped by brown while the Irish were killing the same 5 on 3. Morgan had 30 saves Yumo 38. Both fine goaltenders no doubt about it but this game shouldn't decide anything. Remember at thier last meeting the score was 5 to 3 the other way. Goal 5 in both games on the empty net.

I do not want to take away from the honor, but I think Brimsek award winners will demonstrate less future success than there predecessors. Just like players, many (not all, so don't give me the Ellingson argument) goalies with a D1 college future will be gone before they are Seniors (AAA, NAHL, USHL - like Crandall, Patterson, Howe, Lee (prediction)).

Unfortunately, Minnesota only represents about 10% - 15% of the overall population of goalies in the USHL & NAHL. Most come from AAA U18 teams, other countries, etc. This seems like a rather low %, and speaks to the lack of overall goalie development & game experience going on in MN high school hockey. Scouts are looking for more games & a higher competition level within those games.

You'll get no argument from me. But my guess is many of the goalies contending for this award had the option to leave and chose to stay. I would offer that the oppertunity to play in the Upper Midwest Elite League has done what it was intended to do and kept many of its participants around for thier senior year thus keeping Minnesota Highschool Hockey competitive. (especially the lake conf.)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most junior and midget major programs have a dedicated goalie coach? Even if only a volunteer, those coaches are likely to have played at a pretty high level. That could be a good reason for a junior or senior standout goaltender to want to leave the high school team, especially just before their draft year.

Won't be the last time this year either.

Congrats to Joe. We all know the stigma of giving state awards to private school players, as it just doesn't happen much. Say what you want about the kid, but he's been starting for 4 years on some very good teams.

Hanna
Yumusaklar
Cashetta
Phillippi
Swansson/vudreill
Bounomo

watch it cash money will win i guarantee
Congratulations to Phillippi. Certainly deserving. Goaltending awards are hard to give.

NOTE TO ALL:

Remember 43's guarantees are kind of like Bolivian government debt.
Be kind. Rewind.

I talked to Flip's Dad and he said that Joe didn't even know he had won until people started to call. Good job on the people who hand out the award of notifying the winner.

Joe Phillippi

Congratulations to Joe Phillippi. He has had a great career and has been outstanding this year.

Last night is a good example. He stopped a breakaway with a great low glove save that would have given Mahtomedi a 4-2 lead. He made several other big stops. His D was not very good last night. Mahtomedi is pretty speedy and HM forwards were not getting back. On the scoreboard he gave up 4 but HM would have lost the game and the conference championship if not for him. On Saturday he kicked a rebound shot out while lying on his back with about 2 minutes left that would have sealed it for STA. He has been the difference in all of the 7 straight wins over WBL the past 3 yrs.

P.S. Congrats to the Pioneers on winning their 3rd straight CSC championship.
