I don't understand two goalies from the same school. I'm sure both are very good goalies but other goalies are just as deserving if not more on account of what they mean to their teams.

I can only imagine what WBL would be without Maddie Lenz. She must have played in 20+ games and was amazing in most. I wish they would have a people go and watch these goalies play and interview each and then decide the 5 finalists. She would be my choice.

I also feel it would have been great to give a goalie from teams like the Blades, Novas, St Cloud Tech, Kennedy more credit as all are very good.

Congrats and good luck to the picks.

I agree on all above , Grogan only played in 10 games and Altman in 16
Seems crazy when there are others that have really been tested.

I would really like to know what the criteria is.

I am disapointed that some real good players were left off just because there team is not as stong.

Huh

I agree with the comments so far but the one that really is a shocker is Blake's goalie. She transfered from New York to the state champs and has played one year of MN high school hockey. Yikes - someone mentioned that the DI and DIII coaches vote on this and have the criteria - doesn't give me a lot of confidence in what they are thinking with all the work horses out there. Good luck Justice and Pieper - at least there's some hope that common sense can win here.

I agree with you Puck Bag !!
I too heard she transfered from New york.
Here you have kids that have faced almost as many shots as the 3 of those mentiond combined.
Might as well call it Ms. Popularity 2008
Not Ms. Goalie 2008

I knew of a goalie that recieved the award several years ago and I do not believe she was given andy D1 offers, She too transfered her Sr. Year to a better team.
so I guess it is what it is!

Grogan! Hands Down! Even with only 10 games under her belt! By far the best in the state!

She is in a class all to herself. Similar to Seeler in a class all to herself as a skater!

Are all of these goalies going on to play college? I know that isn't part of the award criteria but it is a bit of a judge to their talent level.

I think Altmann and Grogan are both signed to D1 schools which shows how they are regarded.

Grogan might be (one of) the top goalies in the US as she played for the US U18 team that just beat Canada and has been the NDP goalie from Minnesota I think for her age group.

I was a little skeptical to the Blake goalie. I think this award should be based on an entire high school career. She has 20 games under her belt, playing on a very solid team. I don't think she is as deserving.

i just looked at the list and wow are these all great candidates!
looking closer:
ALTMAN-lMankato is very lucky to have as amazing goalie as they got...but lets remember her attitude issue. doesnt mind swearing at her coaches, doesnt play a team first style of hockey.
Blake Goalie-VERY impressive stats. skeptical that shes only played one year? maybe but she has proven to make a name for herself in that one year. what about having really made a big difference for your high school? some of these girls have been playing for their hs for up to 5 years and have made much more of an impact
Grogen-Played thru a torn ligament in her knee and still made it to Phase 2 last year. has been #1 for her age group at NDP that past 2 years! was named the best goalie at the worlds tournament. started every game for team USA in that tournament...does this qualify her for the best goalie in the country? the thing holding her back from this award would be her lack of ice time this season. but lets remember she started as an 8th grader and has played for 5 years on eagans team. and also SHE MISSED 3 WEEKS that would explain why she only has 11 games under her belt.
Justice- If numbers won the award shes the winner. clearly she plays a huge role in her teams success. sounds like shes a great student and is highly involved in her community
Peiper-Also a huge player for her team. im not sure where her team would be without her but im sure it wouldnt be at the X. and to be a 2 sport d3 college athlete......pretty impressive
CONGRATS TO ALL CONTESTANTS AND MAYY THE BEST ONE WIN

First of all let me start by assuring you all that my daughter is not a goalie. I'm trying to give an argument for the goalies not fortunate enough to play on super teams.

I'm sure all of the top 5 are outstanding goalies. Grogan is probably the best goalie in the state. I've seen her play and yes she's great. She did play for U18 team but I also feel that any of the top 15 girls would have brought home a victory for that team. Look at the scores/stats.

1. Don't you think a goalie who is outstanding but only plays 10 games (her choice) makes all the NDT teams and is going to a great school on a full ride is already rewarded and doesn't need this award.

2. Don't you think a goalie who plays for an average team and all by herself gets her team wins or keeps her team in games against better opponents. Has top grades, Gives back to the community, Is a role model to younger girls and has similar numbers although playing twice as many games is just as deserving.

Is it the best goalie in Minnesota award or Ms. Goalie 2008?

I feel this award should go to the most deserving 2008 High School Sr goalie who's Stats, character, Grades, and also makes her team better.

My pick would be either Justice or Pieper who I feel helped their team the most.

like you said melvin44 "Grogan is probably the best goalie in the state".
isnt that what the award is recognizing? the best sr goalie in the state of minnesota?
what do you know about grogan's grades? what do you know about her community involvement? how can u say shes less deserving in these catergories?

and i also assure you i am not a goalie parent either and this is just my opinion and it doesnt count for anything. all that matters are those who vote for the winner.

I would just like them to keep it simple. Remember this is an award given to the best HS school goalie. Consider what the player did on and off the ice for their HIGH SCHOOL team. Sure they may have played on team USA or another faction, if so let them give them a USA hockey award or what ever for that performance. Like I said, in an earlier post, if you are going to start taking a players performance in other hockey venues into consideration for this award you may as well open up elgibility to the players from Shattuck St Marys, Thouroughbreds, etc. It is an award that goes to the most deserving Minnesota High Shool league senior. So use the criteria within the HS scope to choose. I know many of us have been involved with hockey for some time and we need to be honest with ourselves. Talent will get you noticed, but when it comes down to decision time politics takes over. Be it this award or selection for invitation teams, etc. What you know can get you so far, who you know usually gets you over the top. Sports replicate life. Regardless all these kids are great.

There is at least 1 senior goalie going to a D1 school next year who is not among the finalists

Holyhockey,

I didn't say Grogan didn't meet or was less deserving of the other criteria like grades, community service. I stated that she only played 10 games and others who play on less profile teams are just as deserving of this award. Don't twist words.

Don't just give the award to someone who played on team USA or who's going to the U. Nice comment Goalzilla should we consider the goalies for Shattuck St Marys, Thouroughbreds, etc. Definitely NOT.

I did ask the question what is the award for? best goalie? or who did most for her team? with equal stats.

I think Morgan Pieper should be Ms. Goalie 2008 because of her impressive seasons.

The Goalies from Eagan are fortunate to have a coach who recognizes talent and does a great job promoting them. Unlike some coaches who don't do anything for reasons unknown, they just don't care to take that kid with something extra and do them the service of getting the colleges and the Media to notice. Is it the coach's job? I don't really know. But you would think that they would be the ones with the connections. A kid on a team that is not doing well is at a huge disadvantage. The media including LPH is very lazy, they like to be led by the hand and told what it is they are supposed to cover. Especially with the lack of media interest in girls hockey, you literally have to write some of the stuff yourself. Those who do, will get the pub. When you get a half page article in the paper on you, the people who vote will take notice of the name quickly. Now back to the Eagan girls, they are both very talented and please give them credit for doing so great themselves. They have worked very hard I'm sure. Pieper is deserving, she sees alot of action and does really well. She's my favorite out of the 5 finalists.

2008 goalie picks

Post by hothockey »

Who does pick the picks? I think there were a lot of other girls that deserve that spot rather then some girls that were picked. There are goalies that play a lot more hours, that have played for a Minesota team all their highschool career. Some have also been a BIG part of their team for a long time, NOT just one year. The people that did pick really needed to take a longer time on their decisions and look at all the goalies and their teams.

The fact that Claire Richards from Richfield is not a finalist is a shame. She has played varsity goalie since seventh grade and logged about 5000 minutes of time in goal with a save percentage around 90%. She was all state last year and should be again this year. She keeps Richfield in almost ecery game and if Richfield had a little more scoring power they would be more of a contender. I just think it is a shame.

Ms. Goalie 2008

Post by breezers »

yes, it was said well. Sad to say girls hockey has gotten to the boys hockey level. What school you attend, who you know and what they will do for you. Not to say the finals are not deserving, but what a slap in the face to minnesota high school hockey when someone moves in from another state and in one year is a finalist. Many good goalies have played for their hometown team for years, would this individual get to be one of the finalist if she played for another school such as Red Wing? Don't think so. Another thing is ask any good goalie coach what does GAA mean. Apparently Let's Play Hockey doesn't know. GAA is how a team performs NOT the goalie, the goalie performance is based on save percentage. An excellent goalie could play for a team that just doesn't have the talent pool to win the games for her. Game after game she can help keep her team in the game but after all the goalie only stops the shots, she can not make the goals. A goalie on a good team will see less than 20 shots a game, a goalie on a bad team will see 20+ a game. In the end what type of goalie would you want on your team? One who plays her postion well, keeps her team in the game long enough they can possibly win or a goalie who sees 10 shots and 3 go in? Like I said, it's what school you attend, who you know and what type of PR work they do for you.....
