Iam wondering if TJ played.
I understand she left school early Monday, sick.
My mother is calling, I'll put it on speaker.

I can't quite tell for sure, but it's hard to argue with Austin getting the #1 since they didn't lose a game to a 1A team all season. They deserve it. Now you could argue about the 2 and 3 seeds, although I think AL at 2 and Faribo at 3 is pretty accurate. That's just me though

Sooooo, without #12 Austin is "only" 4 goals better than East????

The Austin 7th graders got in on the action (Thompson from Grunewald). An interesting look at the future?

It's a good look into the future! They have a long journey ahead of them.

No, she played. I know this because Fairbault ( the next section 1A champ) played afterwards. Let us just say " she has lost her fire" :D

We all know they are overrated. Pure luck. They lose their first section game.

You weren't there so don't "guess" why they didn't try to humiliate another team. Coach Bray has more class than that.

Who is we? Why do you always put Austin down? Personal issues? You are attacking girls you don't even know who are just playing hockey for their school. You seem obsessed with this.

Try to put your own agenda aside for a while.

For Austin getting the number 1. I thought that the score would've been higher than 4.
I just hope they pick it up and win their first section game.

MAybe Waseca will beat out Faribault. That would be nice to see. SHut Falcon right up. He would find some one to blame though.

Me thinks soon someone's going to have to start a new Section 1A thread (No. III).

How about something like "How do we help bring this section up a competitive level with other "power" sections?"

What can we do to support each others programs and kids to make this a viable sport for years to come. Frankly fan attendance is rather poor for all schools.

What programs are available for summer hockey at a reasonable cost?

Things like that. I believe that our kids are only young once. The next group will prosper from what we do now. I don't really care which school it is that shows the most development.

Red Wing 3
Northfield 2

It was a very close game. Neither team dominated the entire game, I could see the momentum shifting between the teams. Northfield had the lead with 8 minutes or so left in the 3rd period but made a bad play in front of the net which gave Red Wing the chance to tie it up. It went into double over time and the Wingers were able to slap one in.

It was a rather disappointing year for Northfield since their season started off so promising.

A lot of us were really disappointed with Northfield. We expected much more. However; Northfield was overshadowed by the underachievement of Albert Lea. I have an odd feeling that AL is going to take this tournament though. I want to beat them but they have the most talent of anybody. KH is the best remaining goalie in the section, and JC has proven she can carry this team with a lot of role players.

Faribault is the greatest

Yes the got a bye for the first round. Redwing beat Northfield if you didnt know. I have one thing to say to those under dogs as they have been called. You have to want it to win it. Its kind of a toss up between who is going to win this section. Dont know much about redwing. Just know that they beat northfield.

Red Wing isn't given the credit they deserve. While it's true they have one player that stands out and is very very good, they do have other players that can play. I think part of why Northfield dropped 2 out of the 3 games against Red Wing this year is because they only focused on containing one player. However the Wingers goal tending is their weakness but they know it and are quite good at keeping players to the outside.

That said, I think Austin will beat Red Wing, no question. But it won't be quite as easy as they might be expecting.

On every team, on every bench there is that player or coach that never gets the credit they deserve.

In hockey, that person might be the defensive players. While the center and forwards are scoring goals the defense goes about its business in anonymity.

On the bench, that person is usually the assistant coach. On the Albert Lea girls’ hockey team that person would be assistant coach Hannah Impola.

Impola teaches algebra and geometry at the high school and is in her first year as assistant girls’ hockey coach. Impola gets her love of hockey from her own playing days as a forward for Brainerd High School and later at Division III Concordia College in Moorhead where she played four years.

“I was more of a digger in the corners, a grinder and I think I worked pretty hard,” Impola said. “But the girl’s game today, even since I was in high school, every single year the level of play has increased. Everyone is better, it’s unbelievable how much better the girls are today compared to when I was a freshman.”

Impola’s motto is that it has to be fun, and although she is all business on the bench during games she likes to have a good time while teaching at practice. This style of coaching is something she learned from her college coach Ace Gregg.

“He had a way of making you want to play for him,” said Impola. “Anything he told us we did because he believed in us, but it has to be fun.

“This has been a fun year. I have had a ton of fun and learned so much from the girls. I think they are good enough to go to state — at this point I think it’s all mental — we just have to know we can do it.”

Along with first-year head coach Brian Blatti, Impola and the second-seeded Tigers head into Section 1 play Wednesday in Owatonna when they face third-seeded Faribault in the semifinals.

According to Blatti, he is glad to have someone with the game sense of Impola with him as A.L. goes on the hunt for a section championship.

“It’s been really good having her here this year,” Blatti said. “She is very knowledgeable of the game and has been a great help to the forwards. She has some very good ideas and we have implemented some of the things she has brought. Its’ been a good match.”

Hopefully that match helps the young Tigers (16-8 ) who will have their work cut out for them as they are 1-3 this season against Faribault (12-13) and the Austin Packers (15-9), the two teams that stand in their way of a state berth.

The Tigers split their two games with the Falcons during the regular season with each team winning at home. One big worry for the Tigers is the fact they gave up too many goals in a 7-6 loss Jan. 24 in Faribault. Despite the loss, A.L. has outscored the Falcons 11-9 in their two previous games.

“We have done a lot of learning in the last week and a half,” Blatti said. “We’ve made sure we’ve given the goalies a lot of shots this week. We have talked about it in the locker room and everyone knows it’s time to bring their A game.”

If the Tigers get past Faribault, the A game may actually be A as in Albert Lea versus Austin. Even though the Packers beat A.L. twice this year by a combined score of 12-6, this is one contest the Tigers would definitely look forward to. A.L. has lost to Austin in the section finals each of the past two years — 4-1 last year and 7-2 in the 2005-06 season.

“The girls have a lot to prove against both of those teams,” said Blatti. “If we can rise to the caliber of play we had in the Austin tournament this team will have the potential to be very good and could go far.”

The Tigers face Faribault tonight in Owatonna at 8 p.m. with the winner playing Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against either Austin or Red Wing for the Section 1 title and a trip to state Saturday.

It looks like the Trib checks their facts like the PB. Doesn't AL play tomorrow rather than today? I was planning to go watch Mayo vs Lakeville tonight. Either that or the MSHSL website is wrong.

After reading that Article, I pick AL to go all the way. They are the team to beat. Go Falcons.

Nice to see RSI has resurfaced. Still waiting for the rest of the clan. :D

I caught that too. Details are overrated anyway!

Don't worry falcons, I've been around...watching...carefully measuring my words. To tell you the truth I'm a little afraid of that one guy, wow!
Anyway, I just put that article out there to 'bump' the 1A forum back toward the top. Some of those College kids can't find it if it's not right there

Much like the girls, I stood around and watched practice yesterday while Mr. Reporter Guy was there so I knew some sort of article was forthcoming. I'm not really sure why they chose to run that story now, it's not like they've really set the hockey world on fire this year. But, whatever, it was nice. That said, I didn't really take a whole lot away from it. It really didn't tell me anything I didn't already know except her coaches name was "Ace Gregg", which, BTW, sounds like a name from a Will Ferrell movie. . I think he was in Anchorman, but I'm not sure.

IMO, AL has the most individual talent in the Section, but even after 13-14 weeks, it still remains to be seen if they are the best TEAM. Unfortuantely, I'm not as confident as you.

I am not at all afraid of the other guy (puck hog!) I just think he got sick of getting his daughter and himself personally attacked by Falcon.. He just got too colorfull for the forum. All I really wanted to say is that the team that wants it most and skates the hardest will win the sections. There really isn't a dominate team so far this year so ladies its all about heart and who comes out there to play, thats who will take the trip to state tournament. Good luck to everyone and yes even to your team Falcon inspite of you!! [-o<

Personal atttack on him and his daughter? That is quite the stretch.

No one has ever argued that AL does not have the most individual talent on any team in the section. As I have said on many occasions.....
IT WILL BE BIG NEWS IF ALBERT LEA DOES NOT GO TO STATE THIS YEAR. They are expected to win, with all of the talent they have. It will be interesting to see how their two leaders KH and JC lead tonight.

The section championship is tonight's 2 and 3 seed game.

Twinnesota............ just thought i would throw this out there.. maybe the "team stars" pass the puck but the other girls dont catch them. amazing but true. I would also like to see the "other girls" pass the puck to the "team stars" because that one doesnt happen very often.
