You mentioned Regan, but which one?
Of course, the Pioneers love them all!
My favorite Regan might be Don, at least partially orphaned, he had to work as a child to support his family. Now the Regans give millions back (and not just to Hill-Murray).

That story was already toldpistol wrote:Here is my favorite '83 story coming from the Jireles' dad:
In 1983, history seemed poised to repeat itself as the Pioneers headed to Graham Arena for yet another annual test. Twice in the previous decade, Hill or Hill-Murray would grind through undefeated seasons only to lose in State Championship Final games. Two other Seventies Hill and Hill-Murray hockey teams actually had won State Championships in spite of losing regular season games, so some in 1983 thought the Rochester trip might be a good time to get a loss out of the way. RJM seemed to think so, too, building a five goal lead by the end of the second period. Legend has it that the Pioneer coaches and captains let the locker room go silent... no H-M player made a sound... instead they listened... they just listened to the sounds coming from the RJM locker room... the RJM players saying the Pioneers were over-rated bums....

This is the beauty of schools like Hill. The good Irish Catholics usually have 5 or 6 brothers who play hockey.wbmd wrote:As well as mentioning Langevin (there were a few of them).pistol wrote:You mentioned Regan, but which one?

Hard to find too much on the Regans, because they really do not talk about themselves or think they are better than anyone.
Don's story starts like this
Don's story starts like this
Many outstanding hockey players strive to become millionaires, but the Regans are millionaires who strive to become outstanding hockey players.Regan characterized life in LeRoy during his youth as one of genteel or abject poverty. "In a small community you've got to work hard to survive and prosper," he said. But if a sense of duty and a capacity for hard work are the birthrights of small-town boys, Regan's were strengthened and stretched by a watershed event in his family's history. In 1932, Regan's father was killed in a hunting accident. Regan was 3 years old, the fifth of six children. His mother was pregnant with the family's seventh child. Don is the oldest son. He said that from an early age he and his siblings strove to help their widowed mother as much as they could.

Since he he views himself as a "straight shooter" kinda guy, why not just create a new moniker & password, and resume his role on this site. As a Pioneer, I'm happy to seem him return & always enjoy seeing the response he receives form those that aren't so fond of our program. Keep up the good work...."pistol".
If you talk a little more in the 3rd person you would have me convinced.

Great story any HS Hockey fan would enjoy - I think in the I. Falls game it was either Cardinal or Langevin with the game winner for the Pioneers. It was another fine year for Hill going to the Tourney yet again with only two blemishes on their record - one of them being an 8-1 spanking at the hands of the Rockets from RJM. After hearing the Rockets laugh and spout off calling the Pioneeers "over-rated bums" in the locker room after the game, the Pioneers made a pact to beat them should they meet later in the year. They did just that, with a 4-3 OT victory for the consolation trophy in the 1978 State Tournament - another "High Brow" Hill story.pioneers wrote:I'll add a good history story. Hill was well offsides on the play in the Falls buzzer beater and Falls backup goalie Pelowski couldn't have stopped a beach ball that night.
1979-1980 Hill-Murray Hockey
State 2nd Place
Section 3 Champion
St. Paul City Conference Champion
For the first time in school history, Hill-Murray had a perfect regular season and reached the championship game of a state high school league tournament. For the fifth time in six years, however, they lost to Grand Rapids in the state tournament. The Pioneers outshot the Indians 32-16, but scored only once against future North Stars goalie Jon Casey.
After playing in only two one-goal games all season, Hill-Murray needed two overtimes to dispatch White Bear Mariner to earn its sixth consecutive state tournament berth. Dan Dolan scored the winning goal, which was the first multiple-overtime win in school history. The only previous 2OT game was the 1965 State Catholic Tournament championship. Dan's son Bo Dolan is a team Captain this year 2008 ( Furne, Dolan, & Fillippi) A St. Paul city conference rule stipulated that a game would end any time a team amassed a ten goal lead after two periods. Hill-Murray played in five of these shortened games, but still set a school record with 195 goals scored for the season, which has been surpassed only once, in 1983.
Bill Schafhauser went on to play for Northern Michigan and was a second team All-American in 1984. He won the Ken McKenzie trophy as the top American-born IHL rookie in 1985 and later coached the Hill-Murray JV team (2004-2007) and the Hill-Murray girls varsity beginning in 2007-08.
Jeff Poeschl also played for Northern Michigan and has coached hockey at Mahtomedi since 1997-98.
Ben Belde played for the University of Minnesota and suffered an injury crashing into the goal post, prompting a change in the design of the goal pegs.
In all, 10 players on the 1980 team would go on to play D1 college hockey.

The 1984-85 campaign for Hill included another(what's new) appearance in the State Tournament. This club, including players such as Schmalzbauer, Fabian, Quinlan, Rohlik, Roth, and junior goalie Rick Horvath once again made it all the way to the finals setting up an epic battle with the Braves from Burnsville. Horvath was never one to shy away from any media attention and took full advantage of the limelight during the tourney boasting of how the Pioneers would easily dispatch of the Braves. Much to the chagrin of Horvath and the Pioneeers, the Braves had a talented player in one Scott Bloom who, when interviewed prior to the final and asked about Horvath's comment, essentially guaranteed a Braves win by stating, "I will score the winning goal - someone's got to shut Horvath up!". He backed up his claim as he scored the game winner in classic 4-3 game one by Burnsville. Even when not winning, the Pioneers still steal the headlines.
