Can Farmington make it back, with a win on Saturday? Or will the Big Nine prevail?

I have a hard time getting a feel for this game. Ultimately, I think it depends on Mayo, whether they start strong or not. And like usual, goaltending is huge. Hopefully, both teams play well and 1AA sends their best.

I think you're right SEhockeyDad, Mayo has had its troubles in 1st periods, 4 times it has spotted the opponent 2 goals in period 1, yet they have won each game.
Again Tuesday, they laid an egg against LN in period one, and were down 3-0 after the first shot by LN in the 2nd. Can't do that against better competition!
Murphy is a good gaolie, and she let three in on the first seven shots, that has not happened prior this season, and so I believe that she will be strong again on Saturday.
If Mayo can bottle what they did in the 3rd period, outshooting LN 11-0 and basically holding LN in their own end for 17 minutes, it could be a very good game and outcome for the Spartans against Farmington.

I watched Farmington's 3rd period against LS, and they looked to be a good skating club, but I don't think they needed to do much, as they had a 2-0 lead, and kept South bottled up in their end for most of the period. They looked content to ride out the lead and go on. Good tactic, and it worked.
I saw one of the strangest tactics I have ever seen in hockey occur in this game. Down 2-0 and having a hard time breaking out 5 on 5, South put two wingers behind the Farmington D, cherry-picking. It never worked once! It might have worked if they used one player w/ feet moving, but the two girls just stood out there! If you're not moving your feet, you're not going get the puck! Farmington was simply keeping the puck in the South zone, and the poor South D & Center could not get the puck out?!? Poor tactic, bad outcome!

Just as bad was the practice that the LNHS coaches had before the game with Mayo on Tuesday. My daughter came home tired after the practice and completely ran out of gas the 3rd period as did the rest of the team. Mayo played wonderful in the 3rd and deserved the win. NEVER NEVER NEVER practice hours before a big game.

Jethro, man do I agree w/ you

Never, ever, do you skate your kids hard the day of or day before a game!

Couple of days prior is fine, but then taper, work on game plan...

You're absolutely right, North started tiring in the second, you could see it, and then the third hit them hard

North has a good squad, and they had a good year! They are fairly young too, so next year will be one to look forward to!

I am just pulling for Coach Holmes in his first season in Farmington. Tigers weren't expected to do much, but they have, and that would be a great story for the young first year coach.

Congrats Farmington!

Mayo played excellent in the 1st, 11-2 shots, but story of this year, no goals, 0-0 at end of one.

Farmington made good on their limited opportunities, won the game...

Excellent year Spartans, Twenty win season, not too many that can say that! Proud of you!

Congrats to both Farmington and Mayo girls. Like DmanDad said, Mayo had the 1st period, but needed a couple goals there. Give credit to Farmington, they kept the scoring chances way down despite the shot differential, and their girls execute well on their offensive chances. It was a worthy win for them.

Really good year for the Mayo girls. They achieved much more than most expected, (though some of us knew there was still a lot coming back.) I hope the girls are proud of their achievements this season, just as the parents are proud of them. Special congratulations and thanks to the seniors, Sinead Murphy, Nara Higano, Steph Mathiowetz and Stevie Fiek. Great career girls, 3 years out of 4 going to state is something most anyone would love to have. It was a really nice run.

Actually, our goalie is an 8th grader. The Tigers have won 13 of the last 15 games since she has been between the pipes.

Yes, she's solid. Always in good position, good angles, just sound fundamentals. Her best asset, though, is her teammates in front of her. Farmington's team defense really packs the slot and challenges shots from the point so that the goalie faces very few truly dangerous situations. Their team defense really earned them the section tournament title.

I agree wholeheartedly on the team defense opinion. Farmington backchecked very well on our Mayo girls, kept the scoring chances down, despite our outshooting the Tigers. The Mayo girls need to get stronger on their shots. Been an issue all year long, despite scoring a lot of goals, we could have scored more with the amount of good pressure our girls produced! Also, HIT THE NET!!!! Another thread for next year...

I will say the young goalie (and defense) also did a very good job of limiting rebounds! She always covered the puck when it in close. Very good job! She will need to continue that at State, or the strong metro teams and GRG will eat Farmington alive.
I am afraid that the Farmington offense will need to pick it up at State! A duplication of the 12 shot performance against Mayo will not be near enough against Eagan (Two MS MN Goalie Candidates!) or any other team this weekend! Tigers, more shots, more offensive pressure, okay...

I wish the Tigers all the best this weekend! Keep playing good team defense, back check hard, and keep covering those loose pucks! Hard forecheck, and you will be fine...
