HA HA! Did you guys do the "we hate the dance team" foot stomp too? Your team was great today! You all show true shortsmanship and should be proud of the game you played...I think we all knew that it was not over with you guys until the last buzzer sounded!

Nice to see that Faribault only allowed one goal by Jenkins, kudos. (Not taking into account her 5 assists.)

Falcons, I know you're gone from our lives forever but I would really enjoy to hear you account of the game.

Did it ever cross your mind that Faribault did not hold TJ down? But instead, knowing the game was under control and being her own usual self, she was still bringing her younger teamates along by setting them up, giving up the puck, and thereby, building their confidence.
The season is not over for Austin.

Caveman, I think Tigerpower was being sarcastic.

Gocards, Austin is a young team, that lost 8 good seniors last year. They have developed over the season like a small community, outstate team should. Could they beat those teams now? Don't know. Are they as good as Alex. on paper. Not a chance. Are they excited to be returning to the state tourney? yes. They are basically on a free roll. There is no expectation of them.
Good luck at state, I wish you the best. It is fun to see a small outstate community, like Alex, being so successful. I have enjoyed your interest in section 1A. As you can see there are many hockey fanatics south of the cities.

Good answer...very eloquent...GoCards should take in an Austin game at Excel..and we will return the favor....Yes..it's all icing on the proverbial cake now. I am very happy for the seniors who have groomed and nutured this young team. They deserve another state trip. Alex is a much more seasoned team. They should do very well at state. Yes... we love hockey and we love our kids. Just the way it should be in Minnesota. :D

I recieved a private message from the one and only Falcons89. He/She congratulated Austin on their win, wished them the best, and stated Faribault and section 1A was behind them.

This may surprise some, but it was somehow Albert Lea's fault that faribault lost that section championship.

Jet Don't blame me, still in the asylum, I think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Austin girls did a great job on Saturday. They played well as a team and the leadership of the older girls showed why they are successful. You may loose alot this year, but there will still be a nice core to build a team on next year. Good luck at STATE!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope to make it, not sure if they will let out. Wouldn't let me out for the bird migration, but all I can do is hope.

I feel like we are so left out on all these "North of Lakeville" threads...

Nominees for Southern Player of the Year?

I'll throw out:
Taylor Jenkins- great player, great kid. Turned her team into something this year.
Jenna Christensen- great player. Made others around her play better.
Katy Kvasnicka- Young, very solid player. Leading scorer as a freshman on a very good team.
Erin Kastner- good player. Great kid and a great leader. Gave it all.
Nara Higano- great defender, nice kid. Showed good leadership through the entire year.

Any I missed?

Goalie of the Year?
Their names speak for themselves
Kelli Hanson
Sinead Murphy
Michelle Bonapace-Potvin
Audrey DeVries
Sam Stark

Any I missed?

First team All-South?

I would add Rose Alleva from Red Wing to your list. Just a 10th grader and already an excellent player!

I agree..this girl can fly and puck handle. How about the Mayo girls? Mary Flesher and Stevie Fiek? There are lots of great players in southern Minnesota. This is kind of fun. Too bad there isn't an All-Star Game with reps from each school. That would be fun to watch. :D

The only problem with an All-Star game is with our numbers, a All-Star Team would be a town's varsity team. If you were able to separate the Southern area into two even teams with the "All-Stars", that would be really fun to see.

IMO, it's almost impossible to give these awards to anyone but the girls from Austin. NOBODY thought their team had much of a chance this season. Yet they exceeded expectations and proved all the 1A thread "experts", myself included  , wrong by not only winning the Section, but winning it in undefeated style once again.

Player of the Year: Taylor Jenkins

Goalie of the year: Audrey DeVries

After losing so much firepower & defense from last year's team, Mayo had a great year that many did not expect, quite frankly. Undefeated in Big Nine again, played some very good metro teams tough, and played in the Section Championship again.
Mary Grace Flesher played very well all year as a sophmore, but team played well as a unit and that has to be considered.
Jeff Phillips did a great job as a 1st year coach, and would put him in the running for Southern Coach of Year with the Mayo performance this year.

Southern Scorers (from MGHCA.com); #Rank in State Scoring:

#2: Kvasnicka, Katy - Mankato West 52 G 42 A 94 Pts
#3: Black, Alyssa - Mankato West 36 G 47 A 83 Pts
#4: Jenkins, Taylor - Austin 48 G 33 A 81 Pts
#5: Ambroz, Kacy - New Prague 47 G 33 A 80 Pts
#15: Wagner, Catherine - Austin 34 G 28 A 62 Pts
#24: Christensen, Jenna - Albert Lea 32 G 24 A 56 Pts
#29: Flesher, Mary Grace - Rochester Mayo 36 G 17 A 53 Pts

All forwards that would be in the mix for Southern Mn Girls Hockey 1st Team members... 8)

Lets be real. How hard is it to coach at MAYO? A constant flow of numbers. They then play against much smaller schools, for the majority of their schedule. When has mayo been bad? Double the size of AL and see how things turn out. Two KH's, Two JC's, Two LK's, Two SJ's, Two KN's, etc. I think my point is made.

Coaching HS girls easy? That aside, consider also that JM and Century are both big schools, too. It doesn't automatically convert to a talented team.

The deal with coaching job by Jeff Phillips this year is this; Mayo lost a bunch of talented players to graduation, there was almost no new influx of talent and the team very nearly achieved just as much this year as last. One tie in conference and the section final loss were the only slips. But it could also be pointed out that they played a couple big teams (Blake and Centenial) even better than last years team played them. Sure, Mayo was talented, but its probable that coaching was a bigger factor in their overall success than in the last few years.

Sounds like a comment from someone who has never coached a group of kids before...
Coaching is never easy, whether you have a group of stars or a group of developing players, both are different in approach, but equally difficult.
It sure sounds easy to just develop superstars out of numbers, I hear one can even double the number of stars by just doubling the number of players

And Mac, don't worry, you're doing just fine with the young girls you teach the game to each year, keep on coaching - it is much appreciated! :D

I hope Austin does us proud tonight and this weekend!

To be honest, GOCARDS1, I saw Austing play Mayo twice and I saw Marshall a couple times at the Schwann Cup, so I had a pretty good idea how it'd turn out. But, I think you'll be right about Breck. But I do wish Austin well!

I am here at Excel....Austin was tight the first period. They turned it loose in the second and third. Underrated all year..they have done more than anyone ever expected..Big Nine...they are doing you proud...Hope you can make it Friday. Should be a barn burner. :D
