Orono vs. Mound Westonka Round 3!

Post by mnpuckfan21 »

Game 1 went to Orono 2-1 in OT
Game 2 was dominated by Mound 7-2

Who wins the third? This time the season is on the line. I do know one thing, Thaler Sports Center is going to be rockin'

Orono's goalie situation probably gives the edge to Mound @ home.

This game won't be about the goalie situation. The same goalie has been in net for Orono the last dozen games or so. Likely, this will be more about how well Mound's goalie plays. To give up 6 goals against Fergus Falls is awful. And, Orono has far better scoring than Fergus Falls.

This game will also be about how well Orono plays defense. Orono played very well against both St. Louis Park and Fergus Falls.

This section is wide open - don't be surprised if the 1 or 2 seed don't get knocked off early.

I agree and disagree. They both have one potent line and pretty good second lines. Mound clearly has had better D this year and the goal tending is on par IF Wilson is playing. Orono is going to have to score 4-5 goals to win this one.

While Blake and Breck probably deserve to be the favorites, either can be beaten. Blake has soft goaltending and really one line with the best player in the section and Breck is on a roll but is so young with only one senior and two juniors. It will be Blake, Breck, Mound, or Orono at the X.

I've watched both of these teams over the past several years. Round three is going to Mound. Period. They are just getting back on their feet, Three of their players make up 3 of the 5 single a players in the great 8.

Its gonna be close but should be a win.

Orono beat and lost to Mound with the same goaltender - I'm not as convinced that this is as big a factor as how the teams approach defense.

If Orono puts up 5 - they will win.

To shut down Mound, you need to stop 1 player. And he's easy to neutralize if the coaches are smart.

Where can you find the Great 8 rosters? And who from Mound is on the team?

So goalie 1 gave up 4 goals on 15 shots and goalie 2 gave up 3 goals in 14 shots or something close. Hum. Orono's goalie gave up 1 goal on 26 shots or something close.

I wasn't at the Fergus game (went to Blake/Breck) - but I heard Orono's 1st line had a ton of good chances but didn't convert - Persian had 2 breakaways, Skoog had 1 and Barnum had 2 or 3 point blank opportunities. I guess Hanson had 2 or 3 breakaways too. Not a good sign for Mound coupled with the 7-2 drubbing that Mound gave Orono last time. Orono seems to be pulling together at the right time and playing much stronger defense.

Should be interesting and I will definitely be there.

Well said. If Barnum buries Orono takes it no prob. Same with Chris Hanson. This kid has the most chances out of everyone. Persian has a lot too but that kid doesn't pass.

if Barnum buries....yea, orono is built on his scoring touch - every player has a role - barnum is incredible at setting up players.

thanks for the great insight.

It seems to be that a lot of people in this thread are looking at Orono to upset, but I just wonder if those people saw the game in which Mound dominated 7-2. Game 1 was Horgan-less for the White Hawks, while one person does not make a team, look at the record of Mound when Horgan is in the lineup, 10-2-0, and with Wilson for Orono more than likely not playing, I have a tough time seeing the Spartans scoring much, Mound has much better defense and goaltending, and a better 2nd/3rd line.

Don't get me wrong, both teams are going to be ready and playing well, but I see Mound winning by 3 or 4.

Pucker,

I tend to agree. The only real thing Orono has going for them is they will have the best player on the ice in Persian (no offense to Horgan). If Mound can keep a leash on him, they should be playing Breck next week.

mnpuckfan I don't quite see your logic here. Because Wilson probbly won't be the tender you don't see Orono scoring a lot? He is the goalie. If anything it means Orono will have to show more offense. Without a solid tender Orono has to come ready to play and hope that Johnny "Club Sandwich" Gabos can stop a few pucks for them. Plus if Orono wins rumor has it Wilson is taking shots at practice again so look to him in the next game vs. Breck should they win. Orono has some solid offensive punch (Persian, Barnum, C. Hanson (fast), skoog). If Orono loses it will be due to poor tending not scoring. Even though Barnum has a hard time burying.

Agreed. It should be a great game with great rivals playing for all the marbles!

My logic is the only chance Orono has is to shut down Mound, which they won't, because Gabos is in the net. I'm not saying Orono doesn't have scoring punch, but the 1st lines will match up against each other most of the time, and more then likely will match in points, Mound 2nd and 3rd line are much more talented, and I see them putting a lot of pucks home.
