Anybody see the game between these two a few weeks ago? Mayo took it to South, then in the last minute and five seconds caved in to let South tie the game. Surely South will come to play, but given the same situation Mayo will not let that happen again. I see a great game between these two teams. If the team that played South for the first 49:55 of last game shows up for Mayo and plays a full 51:00, Mayo will win by 2. If the inconsistent Mayo team shows up, South will capitalize and beat them. Just my 2 cents.
I beleve if the "good" mayo team shows up......mayo will win.......
But if mayo doesnt bring there "A'" game.....then it will be a long afternoon for the spartans........
For the record, I'm not sure you can call any game in 1AA that involves teams who are both seeded 1-5 an ''upset''. I haven't seen Lakeville South play this year, but if Mayo plays like they did in the 2nd period last night, see ya later South. Yaggy is also hot right now.
Blah blah blah about section 1AA....EVERYONE oustide of SE Minnesota said the same thing last year, then Century beat Hill, gave Roseau its best competition, and beat Burnsville.
Now, I am not saying that the team will do that this year, but LS or Mayo will do better at state than most think. I think they both have the goalie to steal a game up there.
everyone has metioned that it depends which team shows up to play. however, i think the ball is in lakevilles hands. if they dont show up then it will be close like the last time they played. if the team that beat rosemount and tied eastview shows up, i really do not like mayos chances.
If the team that clobbered Hibbing, Owatonna, and Albert Lea shows up, they will give the team that beat Rosemount and tied Eastview all they can handle.
if LS plays they way they can, they are fine...hearing of the previous game in Rochester...they were asleep the first 2 periods, then decided to play, and dominated the 3rd and OT, outshooting Mayo high 20s to 4 in the final 2 periods...
For all those hating on 1AA. No they havent won many games in the state tourny but they RARELY get blown away like everyone seems to think.
2000-Mayo loses to Blaine 4-1 who goes on to win the title 6-0, Mayo also beat Jefferson in the consolation round.
2001-Austin gets beat pretty badly by Hastings 8-3 and then loses to Eastview
2002-Lakeville takes HM to OT before losing 3-2. HM lost in the title game.
2003-Lakeville loses to EP 3-2 in a very close game.
2004-Lakeville loses to DE 2-0 and then beats Elk River.
2005-Century loses to Moorhead who goes on to take 2nd to AHA.
2006-Lakeville North loses 7-2 to Blaine but if you watched this game you know it could have been alot different had those two goals not been waved.
2007-Century beats HM, skates with Roseau and then beats Burnsville to take 3rd.
2008-?
Yes there is alot of losing in there but most of those games, especially the first round games were all relatively close. Nobody in 1AA is getting blown away and its not because those teams then were any better. This section is down this year but LS, Mayo, LN, Owatonna are not light years worse than any of those teams. Sure if we have to play Roseau or Edina or BSM or a very elite team we will probably get beat but so will everyone else 9 out of 10 times. I think Century started a trend and your going to see 1AA playing at the X for the whole tourny, not just Thursday!!
Eagle - That is what I keep saying. The wins have not been plenty, but the games have been decent most of the time.
You could also add the following:
1999 Mayo loses 4-2 (en goal) to Roseau. Roseau wins the title blitzing AHA and Hastings by 4 goals. That sort of sounds like last year when Roseau's toughest game came from section 1AA. In fact that Mayo-Roseau game was tied 2-2 at one point in the 3rd.
(You already covered 2000, but it should be noted that Mayo outshot Blaine in the quarters...unfortunately for the Spartans Hendricks and Bochenski convereted every major chance they had)
1998 - Owatonna got there off of two upsets over Mayo and JM (Hanna standing on his head in the nets). They did not do well losing 8-0 to the Jags in the quarters.
1997 - Maybe Mayo's best team ever. 24-1 heading into the tourney. The Spartans lose 3-2 to Duluth East. At one point Mayo was up 2-0 and Jason Notterman whiffed on the back door. What if he had scored? DE beats Moorhead 3-0 in the semis and then is upset 1-0 by Edina in the finals. If the Spartans had a different quarters game I am sure they move on, esp. if it was the under .500 team that Edina enjoyed in the quarters.
1996 - JM two and done, but lost a one goal game to Edina who lost to AV in the finals.
1995 - Mayo beats WBL in the quarters - at least 1AA kept that streak alive. Mayo takes Moorhead to double OT. This was the Cullen-lead Spuds. Of course Moorhead loses in the finals to DE. Both the Spuds and Spartans play the crap out of their 1st lines in that game.
Shots were like 32-12 in favor of South. I don't think Mayo had a single good scoring chance the whole game. South looked good and I think will take this section easily next friday
The uninspired Mayo team showed up today. It is tough to watch them just go through the motions as if they don't care much.
LS did not give Mayo much room to create offense, but the Spartans did not bring much energy at all until the 3rd period when it was too late.

All I saw from Mayo was a lot of individual play, and too much looking for the next LS player to hit. Mayo did not play the puck at all... Yawner!
