Were the shots really 41-19?
That seems like an amazingly low number for an offensive club like West.
Was play that one-sided?
Just asking, for anyone that was there.
I see D-man stated most of Lourdes shots were harmless outside-the-dot'ers, but still, that's a big discrepancy.

Congrats to West!

I liked the team defense in keeping Lourdes out side the dots, and yet this may have been Lourdes ineptness at getting to the net...
I liked the 1st line for their hockey sense, being in right spot at the right time, knowing where teammates were and were goijngand their hands were very good
A couple of things for Coach Essay to work on that I saw last night and could be exposed next week:

1. Lourdes looked to it once last night, and that is the weak side wing or center coming down from the high slot; it was open all night. The one time they found that open person, it was a goal.
2. Break out problems: West likes to simply throw the puck 30' in the air, one to clear the zone and two to possibly hit a high wing or center leaving the d-zone. Work on looking weak side more...
3. I really liked how the West kids seemed to know where each other were, utilize that by carrying the puck into the zone more, and find the player trailing that is finding the open spaces in the offensive zone. This may create more scoring opportunites for their skill players...

I was not impressed with Lourdes last night, but have been in games earlier.
West will have to pick up their creative game next week in creating more scoring opportunites and breaking the puck out better, or they may have trouble w/ STA; Warroad; DMarshall & Little Falls

i think a big reason for this is west was on the PK for 10 min in the second in which they racked up a bunch of shots on goal, not very many were of quality. not to take away from bruggeman, he played great.
impressed with (soph-o-more)cambell #3 last night, also, (freshman) weber #10. other than that, same stars as usual, 11, 14, 7, 33.

CONGRATS TO WEST, I SEE THESE GUYS AT THE RINK ALL 4 SEASONS OF THE YEAR, AND IT SHOWS..... GREAT JOB BOYS, FINISH IT STRONG!

With the lead aginst AL on saturday in the 3rd period, west played the same way as they did the 2nd and 3rd period on thursday. With the lead, west played very "un-west-like" in the fact i only say a handful of dangle attempts, and constant dumping and chasing, and their D never pinched or tried holding the zone once they had the lead, and this combination probably led to their low shot totals. Lourdes fired on net every time they crossed the blue line, but T Bruggs is unstopable on perimeter shots. I feel Lourdes had the edge that first period. They were flying all over the place. Penalties hurt them, and west capitalized. West came out flying the 2nd and never looked back.
Lourdes sure will be fun to watch next year. Their junior-led club reminds me a lot of West's team from last year: Two senior goalies, a few senior skaters, and a core group of fast, smart juniors. Watch out for these guys next year.

I saw a different game then all the giddy Scarlet fans on this topic. Lourdes controlled the game from the drop of the puck. The difference in this game was the powerplay. West scored on a 6on5 (pulled golie) in the first and scored later on another powerplay goal. Lourdes went 0/4 in 4 straight poerplays in the 2nd. That was the difference.

Lourdes was missing that Star that could make a big play and West had him (#11 two goals). MW will have a lot of trouble next week if they dont put on a better forcheck. LHS was breaking out with ease all night.

I agree that Lourdes was forced to take shots outside the slot a lot of the game. It would have been a different game if they were able to free up a guy out front. I saw no evidence that LS was outcoached. You don't outshoot a team by 2 shots while getting outcoached. Big time players made big plays and LHS was lacking in that area.

Overall a great game. Congrats to MW. Great fans. Great team and nice to see a new school make the tourney. LHS will be back next year and I assume there will be depth in section 1 for years to come. I did pick MW to win and they did.

Stick I agree totally. West did not play good in my opinion. They did keep the majority of shots from Lourdes to the outside and you will not beat their goalie that way. I thought West had some dead legs, maybe from the prolonged bus ride that got them there late due to the weather. What is good to see is that they beat a quality team without their best effort. I would think that you may see some good jump in them next Weds. As far as the forecheck, they need to be more aggressive, which they have been most of the year. Lourdes has a bright future next year. Good Luck to the Scarlets...continue the dream

West played the game to win, not impress anybody. They kept guys back, chipped the puck out of their zone to break pressure, and played nearly mistake free hockey, aside from the penalties. Bruggeman has soft pads, rarely does a rebound get more than a foot from him. Everybody expects them to flay all over the ice and make great plays but that won't win hockey games like this. Turning the puck over when you could have cleared your zone, lazy backchecking, and floating kids will lose them though. (Along with making rink wide passes in your zone)

Lourdes came out strong but left the first period down 1. After that the game was even or even shaded to West, aside from the 8 straight minutes of power play Lourdes had. I thought Lourdes was outcoached pretty badly the second half of the game. 8 straight minutes of PP and nothing to show for it, and only 3 shots in that span. West isn't that deep and Lourdes should have really worn West out but they move the puck so slowly that West didn't need to work all that hard. Then in the third period Lourdes still played like it was 0-0 and didn't try anything to get some offense. It was almost like the scene in "Miracle" where the Soviets had no idea what to down a goal late in the game.

Scudamore played well enough to win, none of the goals were weak from a goaltending standpoint. Lourdes is young but will need to replace Scudamore and need some improvement on the blue line to get over the hump. A little size wouldn't hurt either as they seemed a bit timid to get in front and do the dirty work needed to suceed on the power play, instead they tried to keep a guy out above the top of the circles. Often nobody would get inside the faceoff dots.

I would take those 41 shots against me team any game.

4 straight PP chances with virtually nothing? Not becoming of a #1 seed in any section.

Coach making the 1st change often, especially in the 3rd period? Makes no sense when you have a chance to dictate the play.

Lourdes looked like a poor man's Gophers last night - some nice skill and generally smart play, but got way too cute at times in the offensive zone or shot too early. Play in the corners has to be stronger if you are going to win big games.

Nut. totally agree. Gill coached like a rookie and was outcoached by the Canuck. Experience is a plus. The Canuck had no problem matching his 3RD line against the best of Lourdes

how can u say that they were not out coached when u say only if a guy could have got open out front obviously that was a part of wests game plan to make sure that they did not get open out front

Good Call TG099, #2, #6, #7, #10(freshman who has come along way from the beginning of the season), and #41 all played phenomenal throughout the section tourney. Lets hope these boys can keep it up and bring a State Title back to Mankato.

Lourdes shoudve won. Heres why they didnt:

Bad goaltending - Scuddamore = sieve

Poor shots - Bruggerman handled those outside shots no problem.

I think to say Lourdes lost because of bad goaltending is inaccurate. The first goal the LHS goalie was screened. The shot should have been blocked by the forward.

The second shot was in close and difficult to stop and the third was knocked in by the LHS defenseman. So even though Mankato had 17 or so shots on goal and they scored three times, it's not a reflection of the quality of the goaltending that night.

I'd say LHS lost due to their ineffectiveness to get quality scoring chances eg not going to the net aggresively as often as they could have. They did every thing offensively that they could have except getting quality shots. I think Voight may have come close to crashing the net once or twice and maybe Peterson once, but that was it.

RL was outcoached by a ton! How could you watch that game and say anything dif?

Not that I think West was well coached either, but Gill was a mess. His forcheck was soft at best, breakout had no push or motion to it, christ the west d(bad d by the way) just skated backwards up the ice like bubble hockey D and kept the RL studs to the outside.

Gill put his best player in the box for a bench minor when he was down 2 late in a game.

Then he plays a passive box on the kill under 5 down 2. Umm sorry but anyone who know dick about hockey would lynch him on the spot for this, did you even watch west on that PP? 4 guys under the top of the circles, one guy leaks the zone and boom you've got a 1 goal game and you just scored a shorty.

Then with a two mins or so left RL has everyone in the zone for the breakout. West didn't even have to collapse to watch the breakaway.

Gill should be an asst. for some team not the coach.

On the flip side, I've only seen about 15 or 20 GOOD high school coaches this season, and only 3 or 4 good Jr. Hockey Coaches and that's out of 300+ games.

Gill needs to go if RL will be a powerhouse.

West Vs. Lourdes

Post by Zimmy »

I hear alot of should have could have stuff in this thread. Rochester Lourdes has a good program and have been very sucessful over the years but West won the game and that is what it comes down to. They are going to be at state playing Duluth Marshall. This is West's first time at the state tourney and I am thrilled they made it there because they deserve it no matter what any bitter person has to say about it. GO WEST!!!!!
