Can anyone think of any rivalries between two private schools?
One that could come up would be AHA/BSM

HM - STA
Hill-Murray has played more hockey games (72) vs. St. Thomas Academy than any other school. Historically it's pretty lopsided at 59-13. They have had 6 great games the past 3 yrs. HM is 4-2 in those games. They have played WBL 67 times (plus 4 more against Mariner).

As a Hill student I don't see Hill vs. Benilde as being a rivalry at all. The schools are far apart, Hill has only played Benilde 10 times. I was at the game early this year, not that many people showed up from either school. As for Holy Angels, people who know about hockey know that it's big, but there's no big excitement from the school, it doesn't help that Hill has never beaten AHA. The feelings towards St. Thomas, a generally strong loathing, is mostly from them destroying our football team every year and not much to do about hockey. Until the last few years the games between Hill and STA generally weren't close and people weren't that interested.

If we are only talking about private school rivalry, STA/CDH is the top. I'm guessing Blake/Breck is next.
Zamman, others may have different opinions, but when I think of a rivalry, I think of two programs who are competitive with each other, play each other on a regular basis, and draw a fan base.
For example, St Thomas and Cretin have been rivals since the late 1800s. I would say an rivalry in hockey they may have used to have was gone until about 5 years ago as St Thomas hasn't been good for a long time. Losing to Cretin wasn't a big deal since we knew we weren't good. In addition, the wins this year were wins over Cretin, but they weren't as sweet as a win last year would've been, as Cretin isn't that good this year.
WBL and HM, on the other hand, are both good year in and year out.
Just my two cents.
Basil Chaps highlighted what I was saying; the teams have to be pretty good. Look at Roseau/Warroad. Roseau is way ahead in the head to head standings, but they don't dominate every game, for the most part games are competitive. Sold out crowds. They could probably schedule the game in the cities and have the same people come to see it played.

I don't think it has to do with the number of games played. For example Hill has played Forest Lake 32 times, but no one would claim that there is any rivalry there. A rivalry has more to do with regularly playing good games against each other. Hill has beaten WBL 8 times in a row, but many of the games have been back and forth and close. The fans show up in big numbers, often selling out Aldrich or helping draw over 8000 fans to the coliseum, and everyone cares about the game, even those who don't like hockey.Zamman wrote:Someone please define what a rivalry is? played against eachother once, twice ten times?

A conference is a good idea, but they need to make once conference for the Catholics and one for the rest of the privates. A private section is a bad idea. I know a lot of people like to see the public schools beat the privates and I know I would rather play in a section closed to home as opposed to playing Rochester Lourdes or Marshall.hawkfan70 wrote:the private schools will all be big rivalries soon as the MSHSL is looking into creating one conference and one section for all the privates

I think it's funny whenever I talk to someone from the Marshall community or who went to Hermantown and they find out where I went to high school they act like they hate my school so much. I ask if it's because of hockey and they say yes. Hermantown, we've played once in probably the history of the schools and was an OT game. Marshall we've played only a handful of times as well and in the last few years.
Yes, the STA/DM will be attracting crowds for a while, but it's not a rivalry and won't be for a while.
