Roseau - Warroad
Duluth East - Cloquet
Hill-Murray - White Bear Lake

Just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are others, I just haven't witnessed them firsthand.

{Agreed}

I've never seen WBL-HM but from what i hear its the biggest in the metro.

Being a former Lumberjack i find it hard to believe anyone other then Roseau-Warroad can top it.

Thor,

Haven't I schooled you enough this year?? ...granted, it was a short bus that brought you to school. Not surprised it took someone else to help you with a way to respond to my post. That education in Oakdale just isn't the greatest, is it? Kinda like the Tartan hockey team, it tends to fade away over a short period of time.

Now just sit back watch how successful programs play the game of hockey. You are aware some teams still play in March aren't you? Maybe you & Johnson can co-op and make it past the first round of sections next year.

On a side note (and a serious one), congrats to your wrestling team's season. They had a hell of a year!

Again, the Roseau/Warroad is the longest, but in terms of post-season the best statistically is WB/Hill. 50 percent of their games are by one goal.

Granted Hill-Murray isn't a city, you can't deny their rivalry with White Bear. Not to mention their intense rivalry come section championship time. Always some great hockey during those games.

The past few years I've been noticing an increasing rivalry between the Raiders of Roseville and White Bear. Especially after a season like this year; a win for the Raiders, one for the Bears, a tie, and a ridiculously intense section game. Not to mention the hatred between the two student sections of one and another.

Duluth vs Cloquet

Regardless who from Duluth is playing Cloquet not only players from other schools but also students go to watch Cloquet play anyone in town

I wouldn't say their is hatred in this rivalry but definitely some unfriendly competition. Especially East and Cloquet.

If this were 10 years ago i would say grand rapids and greenway. but now greenway has had extremely week teams and more to come and its not as fun to see a blow out. in a few years the intensity might be back but now days i would have to say warroad and roseau.

I' Falls and Fort Frances. The border rivalry has been around for awhile. Not as good as the Roseau/Warroad, but one of the best rivalries.

New Ulm Vs. Mankato West

Post by Zimmy »

Being a West alum I would have to say this rivalry has been heated since the late 80's. I played in numerous New Ulm/Mankato West games and we had a bench clearing brawl in kato and were police escorted out after the game in New Ulm way back in 91. Since then there has been repeated altercations that finally resulted in the teams not being able to play each other in the regular season. Probably because the games started to go away from playing hockey but a heated rivalry none the less.

The Rams consider a class "A" team their biggest rival? I thought it was the women's team USA.

For your information. The Rams don't really consider Warroad their biggest rival...others do. Roseau considers whoever stands in their way to a championship as their rival. The Roseau - Warroad history is really pretty lopsided and Warroad has never won the big show. But I would like to say that the first Warroad team that won the class A crown should have had the chance to have the bar raised...they just might have cleared it.

Cloquet vs. Duluth (East)
I would have to say that is the best rivalry. I have grown up surrounded in it. Although i have not seen the other North rivalries; I think that in recent history East v. CEC is the best in the state from what i hear

It's Roseau v Warroad, of course.

As for the Govs v. Pioneer spat, being a Catholic St. Paul guy, I pull for 'em both. Must, however, point out some history to the Pioneer:

St. Paul Johnson - 22 appearances, 4 State Champs, 3 Runners Up, 3 Thirds, 2 Consolation.

Hill Murray - 21 apps, 2 State Champs, 6 Runners Up, 2 Thirds, 2 Consolation.

Great records, both. Ironically, the Govs were among the 'Pioneers' of the greatness that is the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament. Honor your elders, son.

the location of the mystery city is becoming more clear

Why not set the record straight here......This rivalry is not a border battle or city battle. This is an Cross Town Battle. Both schools are in the city of Blaine. Centennial HS is listed in Circle Pines however the school actually sits in the city of Blaine and uses the Circle Pines post office thus that becomes why they are listed in Circle Pines. So the games with these two teams is good old fashion CROSSTOWN bash.....
