Life is politics! There is no avoiding politics. Politics is the process by which persons or groups of people make decisions. It is virtually unavoidable whenever there are diverse opinions.

Also, what is fair is relative to the person making the decision. People generally try to be fair, which is "making a decision free from bias or dishonesty or injustice". Behavioral scientists tell us that its human nature to want to be fair. Its just that our perceptions, based on our personal life experiences, of what is fair is different.

I believe that coaches make what they believe are fair decisions in order to put the best team on the ice. Reasonable people may disagree with their decisions but coaches are generally in it to win not screw someone over. When a coach doesn't play someone he or she believes that someone else adds more to the team and gives them a better chance to win. It might be due to certain talents one player has over another or it might mean that the players are relatively similar but that one is a better fit for the team's personality. You see it all of the time where one team's garbage is another team's treasure. Look at free agency in the NFL. Unfortunately in HS sports you don't have the option to move to another team so the best bet is to try to give the coach what he or she wants (oh wait that's politics )

Seriously though, all but the superstar players have been in less than stellar situations under certain coaches. My suggestion is to try to make the best of it by having your daughter ask the coach "What can I do to get better and help the team" which if successful it would mean she would have a greater role and more playing time. I think asking this question of the coach does 3 things. It says she is willing to work hard at what the coach sees as a weakness, its says that she is a team player and finally it involves the coach and gives him or her a more involved and personal stake in your progress.

Being in a less than desirable situation where you have to work harder to succeed is a life lesson even if you don't eventually succeed the way you respond is important. Its not perfect buts its all I got.

Not too many years ago coach Bob Motzco stood in front of the parents of St Cloud mens Players early in the year at the parents dinner. Bob went on to explain that his recruiting trips had resulted in missing xmas eve, his wedding aniversary, and several other important family dates in order to be on the recruiting trail some 200 days a year. He then, smugly asked the parents do you know why I do that? We all looked in wonderment at each other, not really knowing the answer. Bob then very tongue in cheek said " so I can get all your kids here to screw them over "
We very quickly realized the sacrafice and dedication this man had undertaken to bring these young men to this team. We relized that while we may not of understood nor agreed with some things Coach Mottzco was doing ,He was doing what he believed to be in the best interest of the team, not just our son or a single player. If you think of the sacrafices coaches make with time , family , and abuse This thread should not even exist. In my very HUMBLE OPINION !

Snake makes some pretty valid points especially around decisions and work ethic. If you dont put in the time and live on entitlement it will catch up with you sooner or later. If you have some talent, work hard on and off season and take the initiative to do the things that will make you better it will not go unoticed if you have a coach that understands coaching and applies the priciples. I still belive that if a coach has 2 atheletes close in ability and one is a worker and the other just gets by on the ability a good coach will take the worker becuase they earned it and usually this player will do what the team needs them to do. As far as politics? We'll it's always going to exist to some extent, if you can do something to clearly define yourself from the rest of the pack it usually takes care of that in most cases. One can only ignore talent and hard work for so long because everyone else isn't blind. Kids just keep working hard, Hustle all the time. I always look at Pete Rose the baseball player, he wasn't blessed with raw talent, but he hustled everytime he took the field. For those of us old enough to remember he never walked on or off the field he ran......always 100%!!!!!!! All of you kids have a good off season; stay healthy, work hard, have some fun, it will pay off next year.

one of the greatest coach told me something and has stuck with me.
"THERE IS NO PLACE TO HIND ON THE ICE"
go out there, play the game -- if they are good enough they will get selected.
