Dave Spehar=All-Tourney-Second Team?

Post by hockeyman11 »

How can you beat three hat tricks in the state tourney? What does it take to make the first team? Talk about a big time snub!

I wouldn't read too much into it.

I think they held his poor preformance with the Gophers against him, or maybe his NHL career.

He should not even be mentioned in the same breath as them.

Hard to tell if they based it on tournament play or overall career.

Lou wrote the list down on a cocktail napkin and had to explain to the rest of the staff who half the list was.

Thought it was funny that Neal was on the first team, but never won a championship.

Did Bouche make the cut?

It seemed for a tournament team that they seemed to go with HS career for most of it. Those guys had some good tournaments, but that was almost just an all-time hockey team.

BULL!!! Spehar, 1st team, hands down, 0 arugments. If Dave played in the Mayasich days he would have had a 10 goal game.

I agree. Who did more in the tournament than Spehar?

If it's State Tournament only, Spehar damn well does deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as those guys.

I think Martin and Aaron Broten were named for overall body of work-- Neal and Aaron never even won it all. Crowley should have been named-- best player on back-to-back champs.

Sort of fitting that ch. 45 spelled Neal Broten's name wrong on their graphic. Nice coverage.

Just as long as Spehar wasn't on the first team- I'm ok with any of the other choices

Spehar was amazing. There are few who were better. I still watch that Apple Valley - East 6 OT game. He single handedly changed games and the way teams played. You knew he was going to be cherry picking waiting for the open break pass and still nobody could stop him. 1 of the most dynamic players ever, and deserved to be on that list.

You can thank Wooger for this. Nothing like taking the most prolific goal scorer in the State's history and get the brilliant idea of making him a defensive forward.

One guy who doesn't like Spehar typed some BS without taking what he did in the state tourny in too account. Everyone knows, love him or hate him he is first team material hands down!

Dave Spehar

Post by stpaul »

Dave Spehar probably had the greatest state tournament of all time. No disrespect to the Brotens or Phil Housley but they didn't win championships. Those early Eveleth teams were great but how many high school even had hockey then ? Spehar had 3 hat tricks and gave Duluth East it's first championship in 35 years. He was incredible.

With all the hat trick talk, how come Patrick White didn't make it then? It seems to me he stepped up his game come tourney time both years. Any reason he shouldn't be on there?

We'll just make full teams of 12 forwards, 6 defensemen and a goalie for the 1st and 2nd all time tournament teams and then people would have less to whine about who got shafted.
