HAL got the last laugh...

Post by Sparlimb »

I seem to recall a lot of whining by Roseau fans asking how their undefeated, untied, defending state championship squad could not be rated #1 by the computers. Well HAL was right. When Roseau finally played Hill and Benilde, both teams rated ahead of them most of the year, they faltered. So maybe HAL did know something that the rest of us missed.

Congrats on being right again HAL!

Shouldn't Edina's ranking also be brought into question then too. At least Roseau scored against H-M. What does that say about Edina's ranking all year? And why didn't HAL have H-M ranked where they obviously belonged all year, at number one?

On this basis, Lakeville South should be rated in the top 4?

You have to consider the whole year, not just the last few games. And when the whole year was considered, HAL does have Hill #1, which doesn't always happen (one year Holy Angels was #1 and didn't even make state). Hill's ranking was a bit lower because of the odd tie and two losses to teams ranked much lower. Neither Roseau nor Edina had those. Edina lost 3 games this year and all 3 were to high quality teams (2 of those 3 beat Roseau too). All in all, the computer does well because it doesn't have bias...

A team's ranking does not mean they will automatically beat every team under them. It is, however, a very good predictor.

The point of the thread was that several griped that Roseau wasn't #1, but they closed with two losses to the only Top 5 teams they played. They had their chance and didn't deliver.

Hill-Murray was around the Top 5 all year and had a very slim differential behind whoever was #1. The teams were all bunched closely so they could have gone either way.

Edina was among the top ranked teams all year and obviously is one of the top teams. I don't see the rankings skewed for anyone after enough games were played.

PS2 also told us that Lakeville and Cloquet would struggle at state. It was on the mark there too.
Be kind. Rewind.

3 years ago, prior to replay, Roseau would not have had that goal overturned, in fact in any place but at the Xcel Energy center that goal wouldn't have been overturned. Roseau gets that goal and they probably beat Hill.

If the tournament was officiated like the regular season and somewhat resembled the rule book Hill probably loses to South and we have a whole different argument.

In a 1 game scenario anything can happen. I don't know you can say HAL was wrong, HAL goes over the long term not the 1 game scenario. If he did obviously Tartan deserved the title because they beat Hill.

Hockey's a game of breaks and bounces, only 1 game on the AA side did I see a clear difference and that was Roseau and Blaine and even then if they played 10 times I doubt Roseau wins them all. Cloquet and South both had enough chances to win but didn't convert, Woodbury was at times the better team but was a disorganised mess on that last PP, how does your goalie have both feet over the boards with under a minute remaining and no one is on the ice for him? I digress.... If they played the tournament next weekend with the same 8 team I'd bet there would be a different result.

One would hope 3 years ago the refs would have noticed someone in the crease and that the puck went off his skate that never cleared the crease. The refs should have waived off the goal as soon as it happened. That said, I don't like replay for the sole reason that they don't use it all year. In a section game, it would have counted. But it shouldn't have, because it was an illegal play. In the end, the right call was made. Would Roseau have come back? Maybe, they would have had a lot of momentum and the 5 minute delay to make a replay decision clearly helped Hill. But Hill played an outstanding game and I believe they would have held on. And while Hill would probably win less then half the time in a 10 game series against Roseau and Edina, the truth is they don't have to. They had to beat them both once and they did.

you guys about sour grapes bad officiating are nuts. Hill killed off something like 10 more penalties then they had powerplays in this tourny. That roseau game had 3 horrible calls on hill for little to no reason. Why roseau decided not to take the body is their problem they let hill have breakaways and 2 on 1's all night They were so badly outplayed and worn down after the first period it could have eaily been 6-0 in the second period if not for the Great goaltending of Lee. and that was without any Hill Powerplays given, think abou thtat total domination and basially no powerplays given!! Yikes.
