They lost to HM, isn't HM in front of Roseau? 3rd place is a consolation game, probably the toughest game in the tournament to play.

Having played in one, back in my day, I disagree with this. If this could be (or will be) the last State Tournament game I ever get to play in, and I could leave with a thrid place medal or leave with nothing, believe me I will be motivated to win!

Hey, I'll grant it is tougher than to get motivated for the championship, 'cuz you're still bummed you're not in it, but you don't want to go out on a two-game losing streak and no hardware.

I had no problem getting motivated for it.

There are lots of different rankings, and almost all are based on differing sets of criteria. This is just a fact.

Anyone can feel free to rank teams according to their oppinion of how good of a team they are. Personal oppionion rankings are not wrong or evil or anything. I am guessing that many posted here are personal oppinion rankings, but it can be unclear what the intent is.

Then we can also try to rank teams as objectively as possible. Computer rankings are the most objective -- the only subjective part is when the humans decide what formula to use as the measuring stick. But after that, it's run the formula and crank out the results -- completely objective (but with that noted and rather large caveat). We can also try to rank objectively without computers. Perhaps we infuse a bit of personal oppinion to sort some things out (team A beat team B who beat team C who beat team A -- well we need to put them in some order). But to be as objective as possible (if that is indeed our aim) then we need to put as much emphasis as possible on wins, on victories. Things like:
Record
Victories in head-to-head games
Play-off results
etc.

Anyone who puts together rankings meant to be objective can do so based on whatever criteria they so choose (but should always be forthcoming about what those criteria are--and would do well to choose criteria that can be mostly widely agreed on). For year-end, final rankings, I submit the criteria should go, in order, something like this:
1. Play-off results
2. Victories in head-to-head games (from most to least recent)
3. Record
4. Other possible tie-breaking factors

I'll say that if there are significant factors in 2, 3, and 4, they could possibly override number 1, but it needs to be a very strong case.

Anyone can rank BSM ahead of Edina in a personal oppinion ranking. And I wouldn't call anyone crazy for thinking that. Turns out they are quite evenly matched.

But in any year-end final rankings that are meant to be largely objective, there is no way BSM can be ranked ahead of Edina.

Anyway, I think O-Town made a really good post that there are about six teams that really could battle each other and give spectators some awesome, exciting, epic hockey to watch any time they meet. Alas! The season is over!

Oh well, we did get to see several classic, epic battles in State and in the Sections. Congratulations to all!

Final Top 10

Post by blueblood »

1) Pioneers - they beat the best

2) Edina - ran of out gas. Should be in the finals against next year

3) Tonka - beat every team playing in the Class AA and A Finals

4) BSM - weak regular season schedule as compared to Tonka and Edina

5) Roseau - didn't play enough good teams. Their only quality win prior to state was over Blaine.

6) Burnsville - would probably have returned to State without the section realignment

7) Woodbury - Tough, hard working team.

8) Rosemount - enjoy this season; the outlook goes down hill

9) Centennial - I expect this team to return to the X next season.

I'd switch Tonka and BSM around because BSM beat them when it really counts, but other than that these are very good.

1) Pioneers - They're the champs and they had to beat the #1 and #2 team to get there. Enough said.
___________________________________________________________
When these three teams play, you can't make a confident prediction about who would win.
2) Edina - Played well all season and beat a lot of top ten teams.

3) BSM - They beat both Edina, Tonka and Roseau. All top five teams.

4) Tonka - beat every team playing in the Class AA and A Finals

___________________________________________________________
5. Roseau - Their powerplay wasn't prepared for the team speed of the above teams. It fell flat at state. Great team that would have been better prepared for this if the coaching staff would have had the chance to face that obstacle in the regular season game.

6. Burnsville - Came close to going to state. A solid team.

7.Woodbury - Solid team work.

8. Hopkins - They beat Anoka and Woodbury, and lost a close one goal game to Edina towards the end of the season.

9.Centennial - Good year. Better next.

PondPlayer93,

St. Thomas Academy isn't good enough to make your top 10? Why is this? Do you only care about Class AA Schools?

Edina beat BSM, they are 2. BSM goes to 3. You must be a WBL fan cause they might not even be top 20. STA should be top 10.

BSM outplayed edina, badly. And they destroyed roseau. They deserve the 2nd ranking.

I don't think I've ever seen "games in which they outplayed their opponent" at the top of a stat sheet. I always see "wins," "losses," and "ties." Why? Because that's all that mattters.

This is a matter of fact. You play games to see which team is better. Edina beat BSM in the most important game of the year, making them, by definition, better. I can't believe I'm actually arguing for Edina, my heads gonna explode.

Slapshot888, I think Hill Murray will be loosing a lot of players for next season. Maybe there feeder program from across the metro will help them out.
