You may not agree. But if i'm the Varsity coach and i'm trying to build My program you can bet i would want to oversee the youth program as well. Right? This is the parents point i believe. The parents are like. "If your burn't out-Get Out!"Make sense? He doesn't have any thing to do with the youth at all. That's probably why he lost 23 games or so in a row earlier this year and last. Has that ever happened in the State of Hockey??
I've said this before and i'll say it again. Welch shouldn't need to be paid. That's HIS program. HIS baby. If he has all this passion as his supporters claim. If he wants good players when they get to varsity he should give a little bit back. He hasn't done that since his Kid left. 7-8 year's ago. Now he's just biding his time so he can get a few hundred bucks extra on his pension. Look what's happened now since Welch left SSP. It took some time but the talent is starting to come back there. One problem i see down in Hastings is, it seems the same people have been in charge forever down their Welch-Horesh-Stephan-Sagassiorr. Time for change Don't ya think?

Fitzzy or OJ would be great hires. I know Bruce has connections to BSU but I wonder if he would be interested in leaving Warroad. Carey Eades looking to get back into the high school game?elliott70 wrote:Bemidji opening...
I don't know who has applied, but people would like to see...
Bob Fitzgerald, Bemidji
OJ Kennet, Red Lake Falls
Bruce Olson, Warroad
Cary Eades, UND
or Dave Larson and Kelly Curb

You just lost everyone. Stephan isn't around as in Brad. Sags is doing just fine coaching his son at the B1 peewee level.
THEY DON"T HAVE THE ATHLETES. They lose kids to the wrestling program and the football program. When was the last time a Hastings youth team did anything?? Come on AL you know so much. It was with the group that left. The sophmores and freshman have done nothing bottom of D8.

I wish he would take the Long Praire/ Grey Eagle job, so the 1st year Bantams dont have to go through what the last two teams have. Hey Mule is it all about money? If it is he is in it for the wrong reason. The booster program had 300 kids sign up this last summer to skate, where was Russ, oh yeah he was busy at Woogers camp, If it's about money run your own camp in your own town. What do you know anyway Mule, you don't live hear and wont have to endure this crap for the next 3-4 years like I will have to. If there is any chance that you read this Russ take the Grey Eagle job please, you might get more than 6-7 wins a year in that Conference.
change his screen name from slapnasty would be a good startslapnasty wrote:Just speaking hypathetically, if there was a young coach out there looking to coach a high school team in the future, what would be some good things to get on his resume to get a job like head coach on one of these available teams?

It's obviously not all about money. Were do you draw the line? He is paid to coach the highschool team. I believe he should be compensated for using his personal time. All other professions are. What position or positive way do you help the program?

A high school head coach should not dictate or get involved with the youth program. The coaches in the youth program should be qualified to teach there kids the game of hockey and get them to be better hockey players. I do not agree with the concept that a high school coach tells the youth program to run the same systems. All that does is make the program boring when they get to the high school level because the kids are doing the same things for 5-8 years.SYRUS THE VIRUS wrote:You may not agree. Plus most youth programs don't have the talent to run the high schools systems. You shouldn't force a team to run a certain system. You must look at your own team and do whats best for that particular team.
High School coaches should only go to the games to watch for kids that have potential to skate on varsity in the next couple years.

There would be different aspects of the system taught according to age and talent, but it appears to me that nothing is a greater waste of time and effort then having a lack of continuity throughout the program.SYRUS THE VIRUS wrote:A high school head coach should not dictate or get involved with the youth program. Head coaches at the HS level need to be hands on in the youth programs. Parents and players expect it. In my view they should be working with the youth coaches, making appearances at events, and ultimately having control of the off-season programs. Not only a way influence the program, but provide an additional source of income to the staff at the HS level. Some programs are able to guarantee an additional $15,000-$20,000, minimum, for the HS staff. Without that kind of proactive stance, the rest of us might as well concede to the private schools and those that are well-heeled.
Well, in my experience growing up in a metro youth program, a successful youth program. We did not come close to running the same systems as the HS team. Everything was completely different when I got to the varsity team. I never seen the HS head coach at any of our Peewee A or Bantam A games. The HS and Blue Line club, the people that fund the money for youth and HS hockey, should work together, but the coaches should NOT tell other coaches what to do with there teams. These youth coaches are also qualified for the most part except when you get on the C teams, those are usually just parents because no qualified coach wants to coach a C team.

I have no connection to Hastings what so ever other than my nephew's So i could care less if they lose every game the next 10 year's. But as an outsider looking into the Hasting's proram. This is no dry spell there in, or any kind of slump. You don't lose 23 games in a row and have several losing seasons if it's ONLY a dry spell. They have some serious problems with Welch down there. From what i've heard he can't get along with anyone, and he's burn't out. The AD doesn't have the spine to get rid of him so things continue as they are.
I still think to some degree the Varsity coach needs to be involved with the youth. Now if you don't care about the future of your program well than this is what you get. 23 losses in a row several less than par seasons and you lose out in sections 9-1 to a less than average Cretin team..

Maybe they need to elect better qualified people on the youth hockey board to hire qualified youth coaches. Something is going wrong in the youth program. You can not blame the HS head coach for the Youth programs faults. The youth program needs to bring back some former players to coach there youth teams.SYRUS THE VIRUS wrote: I still think to some degree the Varsity coach needs to be involved with the youth. If you think the varsity coach needs to be involved to some degree, then that degree should be for the youth hockey board to pull their heads out of there a$$es and do something about the issues at hand.
Hogwash! If the varsity coach wants to ensure a healthy program when the kids get to varsity. He needs to be hands on. Like the Virus said. If you need to paid everytime you start up the car or offer your advise well than live with 0-23. Otherwise get the heck out and let someone else with a little passion and desire takeover..Don't stay until you have all but destroyed everything people have worked for. I say shame on that gutless AD they have down there for letting this guy stay in power..
