Co-ops in AA

Post by HShockeywatcher »

Why are co-oped programs put in AA? I understand using the numbers of all the schools, since they use that many schools, but they don't really draw more than a kid or two from those schools. They are already at a disadvantage by needing to co-op to have a team; when it's at that point why disadvantage them even further by putting them in the high class?

Cloquet is a co-op school, what was their disadvantage this year?

Some are at a disadvantage, some are not. The MSHSL is not, cannot, will not attempt to evaluate a co-op to determine the quality of htese programs. Hers's the rule, boys, now play the game.

And on a side note, do you enjoy getting beat up on the board?

Next time, send an email to the MSHSL, they will answer you.
Take their answer and use it to begin a thread with some meaning.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton is the only team I could think of that does well on a regular basis. I didn't mention them because I thought most would realize they are a team that opts up. Terrible example because they are put into class A by the MSHSL and choose to play in AA.

The being said, how many players on the team are from Esko HS or Carlton HS? They may be the exception to the rule, but for the most part when teams co-op usually no more than 2 kids from the co-oped school play and yet the whole school is counted. In fact some don't even have participants from the school and because kids from the school have the opportunity to play their enrollment isn't counted.

My point wasn't that co-oped schools cannot do well; they are starting out with a disadvantage, putting them a class up doesn't make sense. If Esko and/or Carlton could ice teams by themselves I would bet the co-op would exist no more.

On a side note, I do enjoy seeing people trying to put me down and failing miserably.

One thing to consider about CEC.

Their combined enrollment is 1208, which is below the cutoff. The MSHSL would have assigned them to Class A, but they chose to opt up.

Roseville is actually a co-op with St. Anthony.

Hence the "Roseville Area" title?
If we didn't have conflict we'd all be pretty bored

Except that Stillwater, White Bear and probably a few others are called "area" schools as well but don't take from other area high schools (except for the transfers).

I dont think so anymore wbmd. St. Anthony HS boys play at Irondale and girls at Spring Lk Park. The R'ville youth program (which I am more familiar with) ended the coop with St A ~4-5 yrs ago at the request of the St A folks who wanted their kids to make an "A" team.

I think all three schools contribute some players to the Cloquet co-op. At some point last year they had an all-Carlton line (the smallest school of the 3). I believe Jokinen was one of them. The schools individually wouldn't be very competitive, but could probably at least field a team.

I believe that Josh Johnson was from Esko High School. ANd Head Coach Dave Esse is actually a Physical Education teacher at Carlton. It seems that C-E-C has a decent amount of players from each school. Does anyone know if Carlton still has a Junior Gold team?

I believe that there has been a proposal to the MSHSL in the past that would take a percentage of the enrollment from the non-administrative schools in a coop based on the number of students that make the HS coop team. That proposal has been shot down every time its brought up.

Brainerd is a coop with Pillager and Pierz. I talked to the Pierz AD and he said one kid goes up there to play hockey.

Brainerd HS's enrollment without the co-op is 1964. Pretty sure that qualifies them for AA alone.

It would be interesting to get a list of all the co-op teams and their enrollments.

My point was about teams like Mpls East and West and the St Paul teams. They barely compete with the A teams they play during the season but yet they play in AA sections and get worked.

IMO, if schools are to the point of needing a co-op, the MSHSL should use the largest school's enrollment.

What would it matter anyway? You just said they barely compete in A now. All you would do is bump a few upper Calss A teams to AA and potentially weaken Class A.

Cloquet's roster consists of:
Cloquet - 19
Esko - 8
Carlton - 8

This is Varsity & JV...

AA Co-ops

Section 1:
Farmington-Randolph-Christian Life
Winona-Winona Cotter-St. Charles-Hope Luthern
Byron-Hayfield-Triton-Kasson-Mantorville

*Farmington does fine and Winona had a great year

Section 4:
St. Paul Arlington-Central-Como-Highland
St. Paul Harding-Humbolt-Johnson

Section 5:
Brooklyn Center-Columbia Heights-Fridley-Park Center
Irondale-St. Anthony
Rogers-Zimmerman-Maranatha Christian
Osseo-Heritage

*Champlin Park was a #2 seed, Rogers played in the semi-final of the section, Osseo had a great year

Section 6:
Minneapolis Edison-Roosevelt-South-Transition Charter
Minneapolis North-Patrick Henry-Southwest-Washburn

Section 7:
Cloquet-Esko-Carlton

*Appears to have played in 4 straight section finals

Section 8:
Albany-Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa-Eden Valley-Watkins-New London-Spicer-Paynseville-Roccori-St. Johns Prep
Becker-Big Lake-Milaca-Rivers Christian
Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake
Brainerd-Pillager-Pierz
Aitkin-Crosby-Ironton-Northland-Pequot Lakes-Pine Rive-Backus

*Brainerd is competitive every year

To answer this stupid question: They play AA because they have a larger pool to choose from. It doesn't matter if only one kid from a certain school plays, anyone from that school CAN play. It is about the size of the pool of possible players.

Also, there are 41 A co-ops and only has 16. I think your point is rather moot.

BC-CH-Fridley-PC is the North Metro Co-op. Champlin Park is it's own school with an enrollment of 3,273
