attention joehockey...
Yes.. I do have an overall criteria for selecting the team. First, I reach out to the high school coaches and ask them to nominate players from their team. Alot of kids have other events going on and are unable to play... and believe it or not some coaches don't bother returning my call. So then I contact players that I feel have a great passion for the game and have great attitudes (on and off the ice). I didn't necessarily go for the big goal scorers or point makers... but my "criteria" doesn't need to be explained. The east team is made up of a great bunch of girls that I feel are having alot of fun.
Economically... this "DAD COACH" recruited/sold your daughter to participate in this festival.. twice (which cost...um... you do the numbers) AND you helped on the bench. I don't recall any complaints from either of you. The programs you mentioned are great development options... Gopher State is a festival that is designed to showcase the talent of underclassmen. By no means is it competing against OS or CODP. It is not for development reasons so why even make the comparison on costs?? Maybe you should contact the Director of the program and discuss with him what the money is used for if it is such a concern to you.
This is the 3rd year that the girls have had this opportunity... the boys are in their 15th year of this festival! Someone must be doing something right to keep it all going!
Again... good luck to all the teams.. we're making friends and great memories!!

jhshockeyfan22 - First my comments weren't to you and I apologize. Second you are very confused I have not ever been involved in coaching at this event this year or in the past.jhshockeyfan22 wrote:attention joehockey...

I think a team should be what a coach wants it to be and do what they want and do - thanks for your personal explanation. As I said this can be great concept for those who like it and glad for all the teams and hope all are having fun. Good luck to all!

This afternoon it was:
North 8, West 5
The West had a 4-3 lead midway through the 2nd half but allowed the North to score 4 straight goals, with 3 coming in less than a minute. The West was short several players and you could see them getting worn down as the game progressed. These games at 90 minutes (two 45 minute halfs) are perhaps a little TOO long for the girls to stay fresh the whole game. It is running time but the refs leave a lot of stuff go and so they're aren't very many stoppages.
As noted above the North brought down a lot of talent and they were very fun to watch.

Joe,
Things to consider.
Most players I've talked to are saying the competition is very good and are very happy to have been selected. Remember when most of these girls played selects at younger ages and then didn't have a tournament to play in once they reached age 13? I feel this is why they've added this tourney. Also remember the games are 2 - 45 minute halves, 90 minutes of hockey not 50 minutes played in the leagues you mentioned.
The endurance these players are getting is a great prep for NDP. Look at both last year and this years players and you'll see there's a want to play. Most tournaments try to make money especially one's trying to bring the best players together.
Some of last years players:
Orke, Laurinaitus (Wayzata), Duffy, Bacon, Burg, Shiedl-Nordness (BSM) Schmid (St Francis), Haller (Anoka), Pieper (Warroad), Sarah Erickson (Bemidji), Holms, Williams (Alexandria), Scheleper (St Cloud) Ambroze (New Prague) Martinson

Selects were also $200.00 for 4 games of 15-minute stop time (45 minute games) Selects also had coaches U12/U14 who wouldn't ask some of the better players. This tourney gets to select some of the best underclassmen players of High School Hockey and if you come watch I guarantee you'd see a great game.
All teams here are represented by a very good to great players and all should be proud of how hard they are playing. It's been fun to watch.
Hockey costs money! Memories are wonderful thing.

I agree with Melvin, hockey is not for the financially squeamish. Events like this, relatively speaking, are spendy and could be considered outrages. However they are great for player development. It’s a chance for players of comparable skills the opportunity to learn and improve together. They tend to play more of a team game (because everyone can actually catch and make a pass). Most of these players are competitive individuals; this type of situation forces them to elevate their game and highlight the skills they’ve developed over the winter season. Is some one getting rich? Maybe, but one can not under score the confidence builder and positive self affirmation these tournaments provide, even if it’s just for a weekend.
