Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association (MGHCA) Awards Third Annual Charlie Stryker Scholarship to Sinead Murphy of Mayo High School.
The Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association (MGHCA) has selected Sinead Murphy, student at the Mayo High School (Rochester, MN) and senior goalie for the Spartans, as recipient of its 2008 Charlie Stryker Scholarship. "We are delighted to have Sinead Murphy receive this year's Charlie Stryker Scholarship," report Stephanie Sustercich, the Scholarship Committee's Chairperson. "Sinead gave excellent examples of her commitment to sportsmanship and team play in her application, and her letters of recommendation spoke quite highly of her character. Our Scholarship Committee is confident that Sinead's well-deserved selection sets very high standards for future recipients while building upon Charlie Stryker's legacy of integrity."
2008 marks the third year the Charlie Stryker Scholarship has been awarded. A Selection Committee composed of 5 current girls high school hockey coaches and the Stryker family fielded 33 total applications representing teams from across the state, including White Bear Lake, Hibbing, Prior Lake, Warroad, International Falls, Moorhead, Rochester, Austin, and many more. Committee members evaluated applications based on two criteria established by the Stryker family: sportsmanship and team play. The MGHCA will continue to award the scholarship annually in the form of a $1,000.00 one-time gift to the future college of the selected recipient.
The Charlie Stryker Scholarship honors the memory of former St. Paul United coach and girls' hockey advocate Charles P. Stryker. A standout hockey player at St. Paul Academy and later Williams College, Charlie coached high school boys' hockey at St. Paul Academy, and served as head coach of the St. Paul United girls' high school hockey team from 1997 until his sudden death of a heart attack in 2003. Charlie's involvement in establishing girls' hockey in Minnesota led to the creation of the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association (MGHCA) and two of its premier events, the Junior Festival and the Senior Classic. A man of compassion and integrity, Charlie highly valued the traits of sportsmanship and team play in hockey, and this Scholarship strives to recognize these values as displayed by Minnesota girls' high school hockey players in honor of his memory.
