AA
Blaine got ripped by Roseau.
Cloquet beat Anoka to then get crushed by Edina.
Lakeville pulled Hill down into the muck making the game almost unwatchable.
Benilde and Woodbury had some of the worst passing I've ever seen in a AA game.
Edina/BSM - no complants obviously.
Roseau/Hill - Not a horrible game but Roseau played horrible on the PP and kept giving up breakaways. Hill did a great job of checking, holding, slashing, etc. That stuff works on Northern teams, because the game is called different up here. The game had no rhythm, total chaos.
Edina/Hill - I was yawning. Edina couldn't score a goal and Hill was scoring from the red line.
A
The STA/LF game was okay, but we all knew who would win in the end.
The Litchfield/Warroad game was the worst hockey game in the tournament I've ever seen.
The Mankato West/Marshall game was plagued by endless missed opportunities.
The SCC/Blake game was just not good hockey.
The Marshall/Warroad game was ok, but you could tell that these teams would lose to prior DM/WAR tourney teams by at least 6 goals.
STA/SCC: 9-2 is all I have to say.
STA/DM: Men amongst boys again.
I went down with a bunch of people and every single one of them said that not only was this the most boring and bad played hockey tourney they can remember. But there was the least amount of talent as well.
BTW...pistol. Some of those years were great years.
AA
Anoka's run in 2003. 4-3 win over East, 2-1 over AHA, 3-1 over Roseville.
2004 - Centennial's great team with three straight shutouts. Lucia/Miller/Davis/Wehrs/Barber and the Wayzata gang.
05 with Kangas putting on a show, WBL loses AGAIN, Tartan almost beats AHA. Moorhead loses AGAIN. The Cade Fairchild show.
2001 - 3 overtime games (Moorhead/Greenway, Greenway/EP, WBL/Moorhead) Guyer and the Raiders. An unbelievable Elk River team.
A
2003 - Troy Davenport and Simley vs. Warroad. 2 OT games in quarters. Simley with a huge upset over Lourdes (where that kid got rocked and skated towards the penalty box).
2004 - Orono beating TJ Oshie, Kyle Hardwick and the gang. Blake Wheeler against Alex Stalock.
2005 - Double OT in the championship. Aaron Marvin scores the game-winner. Totino beats Marshall in OT to get to the final.
Come on. Some greats memories.

Thanks so very, very much for taking the time to do an historian's job of summarizing. Nice work!MNHockey75 wrote:...

Maybe this is the part that makes Hill-Murray fans so sensitive: it's not the ultimate champion ("Sat night a mere formality.") that makes the TOURNAMENT less interesting, it's the lack of close, competitive games leading up to it.packerboy wrote:The IFalls teams in the mid 60s; the BJefferson teams in the 90s';a couple of Edina teams ;and the Scott Bloom Burnsville teams made a number of tournamnets "uninteresting " because Sat night was a mere formality.Madman Riley wrote:

Can you think of any tournament (I go back to 1962) that was LESS interesting than this one, overall?
The teams you mentioned were all champions.
Remembering the Broncos of the mid 60s is easy. Yeah, they came out on top -- of exciting tournaments. And my personal city-school antipathy to Edina left me cold to their wins, but that's irrelevant. Bloomington-Jefferson was an amazing team to watch, whether one cheered for them or not .
Again, it isn't the ultimate champ in the final game but the competitive quality among all the teams leading up to that game that makes a tournament -- overall -- compelling.
Or not.

This year we had 4 of the top 5 teams ranked in the state make it to the tournament & these 4 teams made up the semis on Friday. The best of the best were playing. If people were looking for lesser quality, but perhaps more competitive games, go follow Class A.
We saw the best teams minnesota high school hockey produced this year actually make it to the show & people were disappointed? I think people's perceptions were flawed by all the attention given to Roseau prior to the tournament & saw that they were just a decent team...not great. Also, the north, usually the "darlings" of St. Paul, just didn't perform well. In the end, it was two programs that most people dislike, and to top it off, a private school won it all. It left many people bummed & looking to try to diminish the event itself.
The Pioneer faithful thought it was a magical experience & will always look back fondly of the experience. Knowing that so many others are disappointed with how things transpired, only adds to our enjoyment.

Best team in the tourney... Deserved State Champs!
But, what you just said perpetuates the dislike, just so you are aware of where and why this occurs in the future...

We were missing Minnetonka but other wise Ppg is right. It wasnt a great tournament form the stand point of a lot of exciting games but it had the best there and they played some great hockey.Pioneerprideguy wrote:This year we had 4 of the top 5 teams ranked in the state make it to the tournament & these 4 teams made up the semis on Friday. Yah right DmanDad. The Catholic schools fans will just turn the other cheek and everbody will love us.

What perpetuates the dislike is bigotry.

Some of us think arrogance, narcissism, and self adulation are not admirable traits. Hence the displeasure. I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that there was dislike for successful private schools, players who play for such programs, and that people come out of the woodworks to take shots at a program like Hill. Being a former Pioneer (long...long time ago) & someone still active in the school's athletic department, I've heard it all for decades. I enjoy playing the stereotypical private school role (see Neut's comments) to total strangers because that is all people think of when they think of private schools. There is nothing that could be said to have you view our players, students, or teams differently, so why try? So some of us have a little fun with it & take it too an extreme...relax, enjoy....it's high school hockey!DmanDad1980 wrote:Congrats to HillPioneerprideguy wrote:This year we had 4 of the top 5 teams ranked in the state make it to the tournament & these 4 teams made up the semis on Friday. Ppg, you just dont understand.
It's OK around here and every where in the state of hockey to babble on and on about how the tournament was no good because the Catholics won and to talk about how they wouldnt even show up if BSM played HM in the final and all of the other drivel.
They actually feel that way.
Its encouraged here on the bored.
But when we give it back to them in parody and sarcasm , they cry :"See, thats why we dont like you"
Its OK to be a bigot around here and in addition, the bigots also require that you humbly accept their bigotry even while you are kicking their teeth in like HM , CDH, and AHA have done 3 of the last 4 years , just like slapshooter said they would when he proclaimed Catholics as Superior.
Anyway, just something to think about.

Hill was the best team in state this year.
We play sectionals, and a weekend tournament to decide the Champion, and Hill was awesome the tourney weekend, but remember they almost lost to WBL in Section final, proving it all has to come together at the right time. It was obvious that it did for Hill, they played great!
BTW... I was in no way referring to any other team that did not make the tourney, I merely was stating that Hill was the best team. Can you accept that and move on

To answer your question.............yes it probably would have been as true hockey fans would have loved to see two skilled teams rather than the clutch and grab, tackle, slash and cross check from behind Peoneers!

True hockey fans appreciate the teams that play the game with skill AND a physical presence. Dont you agree?
I believe this game is hockey, they can hit, right?
Little something called the playoffs, you do what you have to to win the championship. They got penalized, a lot. Didn't give up a PP goal, whats your excuse for that?
Sorry, the memo to the Pioneers that said they have to lay down and let the holier than thou Rams walk all over them must have gotten lost in the mail.
Our mistake, you're right. The Pioneers don't deserve this championship for playing the game it is supposed to be played.

Why did this turn into a Hill/Roseau thing? Get over it. Hill-Murray is the state champ.
The fact is, the single A tournament was Horrible. The worst ever. You add the four AA quarterfinal games where the collective scores were 20-3. And you then throw in a 3-0 AA final and a 5-1 A final and the tourney was just bad. That doesn't take away the fact that I had fun, but to me, it was the worst I've been to (been going since 99). Since I was born, my school has been down there once, I was on that team. So I don't know what it's like to have my school/team there like Hill-Murray did this year and win it. For them it's the best year ever. For others it's horrible because there team got whooped. For people like me who go for the atmosphere, the games, the talent, it was a major let down. But that won't stop me from going next year and the year after that.
