Benilde/Edina game was raucous, but other than that for both A & AA, pretty quiet... It was extremely exciting in the X. I was yelling so loud the entire AA final I lost my voice. You know, while I'm glad he's adopted The Pioneers I'm even more happy he likes to see high school hockey. It's unique in a way as we get so much selection of games to watch during the year and so many great matchups that sometimes don't include my squad. He happily sat through a bunch of games at the X 3 days in a row for the Christmas tournament. 1) the officiating was bad. 2 of the guys there are considered below average when they do games here. The MSHSL needs a better way to pick it's officials than who you are and what position you hold in your officials association.
2) The skill level is going down, way down. Kids are much better skaters today than 30 years ago but they can't pass, can't catch a pass, move without the puck, back check, hit the net 3 out of 10 times with a shot, etc. The AA team that played the best team hockey won each game handily.
3) The BSM/Woodbury game was possibly the worst game I've seen in 30+ years. This includes some 1AA teams being beaten by 8 goals.
4) The A hockey side had the 2 best games of the quarterfinals, the AA side was ugly. The best AA QF game was Hill/South, if a 1AA team is in the best AA game of the day we have an issue.
5) the A hockey tournament has become a private school affair, not many have a problem with Hill, BSM, or Cretin playing AA, after all Edina picked up a key transfer too, that levels the playing field. However STA, Marshall, etc have a distinct advantage over most A teams.
On the other hand last years tournament was very very good so that may make this years seem so weak. Also teams like Centennial, Rosemount, and Duluth East were knocked out, letting some other teams get a shot.
