Doug Woog Why?
Why does Doug Woog feel the need to rip on youth hockey? He did it tonight and I have heard him speak several times and he did it then too. In one case he was a keynote speaker trying to inspire kids and he spent the time telling them that youth hockey wasn't like the old days and this is why our kids are not as good.
Note that USA and MN kids are represented more in the NHL now than they have been in the last 20 years. Top Draft picks are coming out of the state, and yet he says the youth hockey is to blame for lack of skill in the college game.
Sorry I watch a lot of hockey and he is dead wrong!
oh and the problem with broadcasting now days is the the color guys can't complete a sentence.

I like Doug.
(I am biased as I know and like him away from the screen.)
But he brings HS, college player and of course college coach to the job.
Do I agree with him?, not very often.
But he speaks his mind, he gives commentary on a play, he works well with Frank, his partner. And I should add, I seldom listen to TV play by play or color. I listen to get names and numbers. I watch the game and make my own conclusions. I know off-sides, I know SOG, quality ops etc....
So, yes, I like him, but not because I think he does a spectacular job, but I appreciate the comments based on what he has done. Same with Lou Nanne.

I would agree with elliot. I enjoy people who speak their mind even if it may be an opposing opinion as long as there is some sound rational behind it.
I like Woog just because of his character. Any college coach that comes home after a bad defeat and shovels his elderly father's driveway late at night says a lot about the person inside.
He also makes me laugh at some of his Woogisms - he is the Yogi Berra of college hockey. Stop taking him so seriously Chuck and you will enjoy him more.

Re: Doug Woog Why?
Here I agree, but with Wooger I don't think he can speak and listen to what they are yipping about in his ear piece at the same time. That or he just loses his train of thought......and hey, at my age, I can appreciate that problem. I'm not as old as elliot but I bet he can .........Chuck Norris Fan wrote: oh and the problem with broadcasting now days is the the color guys can't complete a sentence.
what was I saying again?

Sometimes it scares me how often I agree with you two....but I too have to vote for the wooger. First of all I had season tickets back when he was at the U (should never have let them go) Than, as a new hockey mom he educated me with his explanations of every rule. Later in life, I appreciated it when he explained everything because the kids were noisy and I couldn't pay close attention to the game but I could count on Woog explaining it all in detail. Now we have TiVo and I can just back it up and watch it myself so I could probably do without him. But I know there are many, many new hockey moms and dads that he is educating about the game of hockey. So, if he explains offsides again, just think of all those little mite families sitting there watching the game together and know that he is growing the game where it counts the most. Lets face it, if you know hockey, you wouldn't agree with anyone who did the color. What fun would that be?

As long as they don't show his face, I'm fine with him. I've seen cats that blink less often.DMom wrote:Sometimes it scares me how often I agree with you two....but I too have to vote for the wooger. tomASS, I appaud people that speak their minds. The problem with youth hockey. Are the people that are not open to new ideas. Even when there is rational and logic behind the ideas.tomASS wrote:I would agree with elliot. I am guessing that I was at the same banquet as CNF when Woog was the keynote speaker. It was the most embarrassing speech I have ever heard. The kids were so confused at what he was saying and he never said anything motivating to them. He rambled on about the youth being poor and composite sticks being the blame for it. It is a good thing that he wasn't the coach of the gophers then because I am sure he would have turned alot of them off. I haven't watched a gopher game with the sound on since that banquet!
Maybe he is the G. Bush of MN hockey where he is much better in private than he is in a public forum. You can just hear the gears grinding and the thoughts banging off the inside of his head - he has trouble organizing all that he wants to say.peanutbutter wrote:I am guessing that I was at the same banquet as CNF when Woog was the keynote speaker. Did anyone watch the game on Friday night? The big ten network did a fantastic job on covering the game. Not to mention during the intermission they actually showed highlights from other games. This is something that Fox doesn't do.QuackerTracker wrote:He needs to read a rule book. He didn't as a coach and he sure has not since he moved up in the booth. Only slightly less clueless on the rules then Jeff Dubay!!!
If you haven't had the chance to watch a game on the big ten network. You'll like it.

I doubt you watched the game or you wouldn't be saying that. 1/2 of the second period was missed for a news conference. This is also something that FSN doesn't do.slasher wrote:Did anyone watch the game on Friday night? The big ten network did a fantastic job on covering the game. Spin-o-rama, It was unfortunate that they covered the news conference. I still think they do a better job than Fox. Of course, that's my opinion.spin-o-rama wrote:I doubt you watched the game or you wouldn't be saying that. 1/2 of the second period was missed for a news conference. Gophers are over rated, I don't think so, they will surprise. You wouldn't be saying what your saying if we still had Okposo, Goligoski, Stoa, Johnson and O'brien, not many teams could lose that much and still make the NCAA's. The puck control of those defenseman are the best I've ever seen in college hockey.H mn hockey wrote:doug woog is stupid. i am surprised he was a D1 coach for the gophers. u listen to him on tv. all he says about anything is that the gophers are amazing and blah blah blah! their is many more good teams then the gophers. they get lucky. how many ot wins do they have? gophers are overrated. big time!
