Are all these "jersey" tourneys worth it?

Post by Love2skate2 »

for $180-200.00 does it really help the kids or are the mn Selects, midwest selects, super series, elite classic just money makers and a chance to have some fun....?

Most the kids that play in these tournaments play AAA so I don't think it makes a difference. Money isn't going to stop parents for paying for an extra Tournament. With all the hockey camps and money already spent. I looked at rosters for Blades, Rbk and some other top AAA teams. I count as many as 25 skaters on roster with 4 goalies. How do they get any playing time. I have a child that plays for a different AAA team and is out there every other shift. He isn't great and his teams would most likely get killed if he played the great 95 teams.

With 25 skaters is this A-Team B-Team under one roof, I would ask some parents I know but, I don't think they would give me an honest answer. This isn't a bash on AAA teams I was just wondering.

RBK

Post by SWPrez »

CoachJ,

I don't know what the deal is with the Blades roster, but RBK '94s carry approximately 27 on their 'roster'. Of those, approximately 10 players are 'practice players'. They train with the team and possibly get an opportunity to play in games if a game rostered player cannot make it.

When they play in games its three lines, three sets of D, and two goalies. They do not put 27 on the bench.

As RBK is limited on games and focused on development, these kids get a lot of skill development work at the practices.

I think it can go one of three ways. First, the way it seems that teams like Team Reebok and Team Extreme and a few others do it, is to have over twenty rostered players and they practice a few times just before tournaments, they enter open tournaments and they do run a very long bench. whether each kid gets the same number of shifts, I couldn't tell you. it wouldn't be very many. These teams play more games than they practice.

Some of the teams roster just a tourament team and a handful of practice players to cover for tournament players with conflicts, or they are younger or older and are picking up ice with siblings or relatives or neighbors (and paying for it at a practice rate). Theses teams do practice more than they play games, mainly the known club teams like Icemen, Blades, etc.

Than there are teams that practice a lot, carry a lot of players for development and enter two or three tournaments. More about the practice than the tournaments. They can carry 25 players, with ten of them knowing they won't be skating in the tournaments. one of my sons is doing that this season, he doesn't really need more games, but he does need to skate. He's skating with some buddies (he's a birth year younger) and it's over a longer period of time than a camp. Ever pay for a week long camp only to have your child develop the stomach flu after the second day??? ouch to the pocketbook (and to the kid).

From looking at the rosters at both of the weekend tournaments, at the younger levels anyway, most of the kids are Showcase AAA, not club AAA. Not to say there aren't exceptions and there are a number of very good kids skating, but most of the club team members don't participate, for whatever reason (probably spring break before their heavy season of skating kicks in).

just what I have observed, i'd be interested to hear the real story behind some AAA teams and their rosters.

I know the Super Series says it's a fundraiser for a charity, but I was under the impression it was started by the Blades? Do I have my tournaments confused? is that the elite classic?

Super series is run by the blades. I don't know if it's for charity. My Child plays Showcase AAA and I was wondering how all those kids play for RBK or Blades . Some of these teams carry 4 goalies. Thanks for your reply. Sorry we went of topic. These tournaments give kids a chance to play against the best. I think most of these kids already play with these teams or against when they play AAA.

Dmom - RBK

Dmom,

You are incorrect on RBK being a 'game mill' AAA team.

Here is RBKs '94 calendar:

http://www.jdhockey.com/page/show/33510

My understanding is they will play in two tournaments in May and put in approximately 30 hours of practice/skill development leading up to those tournaments.

that's good to know. although I didn't really mean that part to be bad, some kids would prefer to just play games in the offseason. I know that whenever I saw them they had 20 kids plus on the bench for tournaments. that is a little crowded, but to each their own. After two months of practicing, mine may be in tears when he doesn't get to play in any games or tournaments. time will tell.

Jerseys

Post by Tenoverpar »

speaking of Jerseys...nice job by the Super Series for getting
"SWEET Reebok Edge jerseys"..to quote the kids.

It's not about the jersey, my son played in the super series with a few kids he played with this year and with a bunch of kids he played against.
The kids had a blast playing hockey this past week...priceless. If you were not part of it and think other wise...your opinion is baseless and meaningless to those who enjoyed alot of fun.

As for rosters, the bottom line is most kids play multiple sports and are not available. I know in my sons case, he was asked what of the 4-6 tournaments his spring team will play in, can he make. It's pretty regular that kids are busy with other things so large practice rosters (more than 15 and 2) is the norm. Like dmom said, some kids just want to practice with a higher caliber team. Practice afterall is what improves these young players.
