Shattuck St. Mary's National Champs again

Post by 2 sides »

Shattuck St. Mary's boys Prep team WON the Tier 1, U-18 USA hockey national hockey tournament last weekend by beating Team Illinois 5-1 in the Championship game. This is 2 years in row, and maybe 5 in the past 8 years. Congrats to them. Surely this will be challenged as not qualifying for this forum, as many posters here, if not all are "anti" Shattuck, or really anti private schools in general. But it is pretty impressive nationally what this program has produced year in and year out. Especially if you pull up college and NHL rosters and find Shattuck kids all over the place.

I have no problem with them. They do a great job every year and turn out some of the nations best talent (Crosby anyone?) and the kids are well rounded. I do have an inside word that the only reason Gretz's kid plays is that he is Gretz's kid. Apparently he sucks  Congrats to them

I like 'em, too... probably the second best high school program in the State of Hockey.

Wayne Gretzkys son didn't even go there this year. What's your point? He never played on the prep team either. He was a lower bantam player. Again I will ask, what's your point?

We were hoping he'd play and be called the Great Son!

Shattuck

Post by gopherhockey1234 »

This is the first time in Shattuck school history that they have won back to back titles. Thats pretty impressive considering the players that have went through there. They did it without David Toews also, I guess he did not play a game in the tourney. (ACL Sprain). I see Derek Stepan led the Tourney in scoring with 13 points in 6 games. Congrats to him. This is the last time I am cheering for you kid. Wisconsin sucks!!! Congrats to the whole team. Great job!!!!

They go a lot farther than the US and Canada. On their prep roster they have players from England and Sweden.

As far as I know the only MN team to beat them this year was BSM.

Any given day, any team can get beat. It's how you play when it really matters re: championship games!!! 9 out of 10 games Shattuck beats BSM. Were you at the game? Shattuck completely dominated. Out shot them 4 to 1 ( at least). And yes, Shattuck did play the nationals without leading scorer David Toews. To say the least, impressive they go and win back to back national titles.

Section 1 and the State Tourney could only benefit from the addition of SSM.

You honestly believe that BSM (or Edina, for that matter) has a better program than Shattuck-St. Mary's? They did beat them this year, but BSM took third int he state and Shattuck took first in the country, so I'll give Shattuck the edge. As far as programs go, SSM is by far an away the best in the state, and can make a strong case for best in America. No team in Minnesota can even come CLOSE to the program Shattuck has built.
Everyone hates private schools (and Edina)!!

The exact point I was trying to make. You just said it better. Shattuck is NATIONAL, the others are state high school. I'll go with Shattuck, too.

Minnesota... the biggest and best hockey tourney in the country.

Shattup... lost to the third place team and beat some pretenders from IlliNOISE!

Just trying to be nice, calling them second best... should have said fourth.

I'd say it is a apples and oranges comparison, wouldn't you? Shattuck recruits from all over and should be better given that fact. It doesn't operate like a MN HS team. Certainly not like public schools around here. Heck, they aren't even like the private schools around here who also rely on local products.

Although I do believe if a team of top MN kids was put together in a similar fashion and practiced/played enough to get accustomed to each other, they would regularly beat Shattuck.

Shattuck

Post by gopherhockey1234 »

I have said this before on this site. The Shattuck team is not a All star team. They have two lines of kids that have learned to play the game at a higher level. Tom Ward is considered by alot of people the best U18 coach in the Country. If you look at the track record of him producing great hockey players it is remarkable.

There is not a better School in the Country to send you son or daughter to if they want a chance at a division 1 hockey scholorship. They are the best team in the state.

Maybe so, but the question becomes is it a worthwhile "investment" to spend $35,000 a year ($140,000 total) for a chance to win a D1 scholarship that is maybe worth half that much? (Minnesota, UMD, MN State, SCSU, Bemidji, Wisconsin).

To many of you show your ignorance so often. Shattuck St Mary's won a tournament. yes they call it a national championship but is it fair that they automatically qualify every year because no other Minnesota teams want to play in it. I guess they would rather play in front of 19,000 as opposed to what maybe 1000? Yes they are given a free pass to the tournament every year while every other team has to go through a state and regional tournament to qualify.

Shattuck did out shoot BSM however it was not 4-1. In the first period it was 11 -2 after that it end 33 - 21. Do the math 22 - 19 for period 2 and 3. Once the kids from BSM figured out that those kids are just kids they started to play with them and if they played 10 times it would not be 9 - 10 because each game would be a little better chess match then the one before. If you have a better goalie who keeps his team in the game then you have equally matched teams. Goal tending is still part of the game.

If I am not mistaken Shattuck has lost to a MN High school team the last 3 years in a row. 2 to Holy Angels and 1 to BSM. Could be wrong about the first game result with Holy Angels 3 years ago.

Also Sydney Crosby spent one year at Shattuck. He was a 9th grader who they would not let play at the major junior level in Canada because he was to young. Even though they believed he could have. That tells me that Sydney was pretty talented before he got to Shattuck.

Too much mystic about a program that is given every advantage to be successful.

I am a realist this program is in a league of its own. The results speak for themselves, just like Edina in the 80s. Stop bashing something that is better. Show some class.

You sound like your disappointed to here the truth. There is no doubt that they do have a nice list of players that go on to bigger and better things. But to be realistic about it. They are given every advantage as team to be the best year in and year out.
