You know just as well as I do that he was underused for one reason only.

Because of your "FAVORITE" player. Rob Johnson. He was the focal point of the team and he shouldn't have been. For whatever reason Rob has caught every break from the coaching staff since his 10th grade season. Rob didn't give up the puck unless he absolutely had to. Max is a playmaker not a goal scorer so much and if Rob wanted to score goals he should have let Max play his game and reap the benefits by scoring more goals than he did this season and possibly would have boosted his status with junior teams, colleges, and so on...

My point of him being underused: He was THE most skilled player on the team this year and his body caught up to his skills. He should have been their go to guy but he wasn't for whatever reason...I feel they would have succeeded as a team (aka got to state) with him at the reigns rather than Rob. Just my opinion think of it what you would like.

UMD will be a surprise you can hold me too it. They'll be pretty decent I won't say best in the WCHA but they'll be in the Final Five a couple of times again coming in the next few years just you watch...

My understanding, from what I've heard from my friends in Duluth is, this is absolutly the case. I wasn't there so I don't know, but this issue tore this team a part over the year.

To which I say, be real people, would you really expect anything different? The fact is his dad has been a member of that staff since they took over that program, so why wouldn't the kid get the benefit of the doubt. I would think that is human nature, after all the kid did grow up around the team. I'd find it hard to believe that if the same situation was going on at any other high school or in any other sport in this country the outcome would be similar to this one more often than not.

Like Coldasice said it's not like the others didn't get to play, sometimes coaches build around a player whether that player is the right or wrong player when it is all said and done the coach has to deal with that on his own. The bottom line is if you aren't one of the people on the team (on the team, being a parent of a player does not put you in this category believe it or not) if you aren't a member of the team at practice, in the locker room etc. than you don't know what is going on truely. To say a team didn't get to a state tournament because of a player is wrong, you can't fault a kid for doing what he is told to do. That ultimately falls on the coach. Which is not to say that the coach was wrong either, he knows his team better than anyone does, me, you or mom and dad, so if he feels that was the guy to ride, than that was the guy to ride, because he is there day after day. Fact is, there are only 8 spots at the state tourney and rarely are all 8 of those teams the top 8 in the state. Thats why you play the game.
whoever said team was torn apart is nuts, this was by far the closest team at east on and off the ice in quite awhile, the only thing that tore the team apart was the loss of senior keegan flaherty who should have stayed at east as he had a bad year in juniors and the loss of a senior goalie who quit the team half way through. I believe johnson, boese being seniors and max tardy played their hearts out the entire year, coach's son or not, they all deserved their ice time.

I guess I can't argue with you because like I said in my post...I wasn't there. I'm just going off what I've heard through the grape vine...Frankly it doesn't really matter, the year is over and if there was any problems next year is a new year.

UMD Update?

Post by money »

Good evening,

I just wanted to post that I saw Rohlik at both the Tri-City and Sioux Falls tryouts this past weekend in Bloomington and U of M respectively. Also, Hill from the U and Scott Owens of CC were in attendence ( tons of others too).

Any idea of who UMD may be looking at? I know Max Tardy was there for Tri-City. Any other potential Dogs targets for a couple years down the road?

Thanks for your thoughts...

**Bump** EP vs Burnsville

Post by money »

Good morning,

Quick question - Anybody know what players Steve Rohlik (UMD asst coach) would have been looking at between EP and Burnsville? I was at the game and to be honest, they were scouts everywhere. I mean a scout from Edmonton Oilers sat next to me too.

I guess I am a little shocked that this game stirred that much interest. Besides Leddy, who else has D-I potential. Just looking for some honext feedback. :?

**I must say the younger Rau kid is a nice player for being 10th grade and weighing about 130 lbs. Great skill set.

Keegan Flahrety and Max Tardy have both committed to UMD. Justin Faulk is a great pickup for the Dogs. He plays with Derek Forbort on Team USA and is a great player.

Also, regarding the Gophs losing head to head battles, Forbort was being recruited by the Gophers AND The Sioux, and chose UND.

Rumblings on 2/10/09...

Post by money »

Good afternoon,

FYI...Couple things I heard around the various rinks regarding UMD (overall, pretty quiet) is that Adam Krause from Hermantown is getting his fair share of looks for the coaching staff. Obviously, a local kid and I don't know much about him.

Also, Aaron Jamnick is possibly on the radar as well. They followed him pretty closely while his Hibbing squad faced Denfeld a while back at the Hertitage Center/Arena. Besides that, nothing much else from the UMD camp.

Hopefully, we will see some activity soon. Couple WCHA teams have been picking up verbals in the past 7-10 days (Kato and St Cloud come to mind).

Later!

**Any summer recruiting news?**

Post by money »

Good afternoon,

With the Gophers winning the battle for the Reilly twins from AHA...what is next for the Bulldogs? Besides their interest in Jacob McCabe (along with all the other top tier schools), I haven't heard much of anything this summer with regards to player interest and recruiting targets for the '10 season and beyond.

If anyone knows if any rumblings...let us Dog fans know. :)
Thank you.

I wasnt aware that the reilly twins were gopher prospects?? Do you actually think they would take them both? Or either one of them? I know they are pretty good, but i dont think they are for sure D1 talent with a gopher teamSurely you made this post after being at the local watering hole way to long!

Good one MNhockeyfan. Have to admit I was quite surprised when I read the paper yesterday but good luck to them. Travis Boyd is definitely Gopher material and it will be great to watch him play here. Congratulations to Travis!

Ill-regardless I thought, "winning the battle" was a little funny.

Also, first time I recall the Gophers offering a spot to a 10th grader (Boyd).

Thoughts

Post by money »

Good afternoon -

Attended the SW Elite vs Shattuck game this past Wed night at Shattuck.
Here are my thoughts (somewhat UMD related)

1. First off, I thought Joe Basaraba (UMD recruit) is a fine player. Impressed with his physical play and he quick shot release. Thought his skating good use some work. Interesting if he will come next year to UMD or play USHL. I think it is the former but, a year wouldn't hurt.

2. SW played well. Love their D core. Holl (Gopher) is tremendous. I was very impressed with how well he played. Hesketh a close #2. Prochno was solid. No disrespect to Andrew as UMD was recruiting him. But, Holl and Hesketh were a nice pair.

3. Any idea where Everson is being recruited by? He played a nice game too and seems like he really has physically developed from last year. Props to him.

Most underrated player - Skalbeck from SW team too. What a good player that nobody talks about. He is a "gamer". No other word comes to mind. Really hustles and he has a good shot for being about 150 lbs!

That is my thoughts in a nut shell. 8)

09-10 - Early Signing Period Fast Approaching

Post by money »

Hello and good afternoon,

**Bump (lack of updates, time to move this thread up)

With the early signing period fast approaching and the Elite League winding down...it is baffling and somewhat surprising how quiet UMD has been. They did get a verbal from Krause later in the summer but, awfully quiet.

The only news I have heard is that Garrett Hendrickson and Tyson Fulton both vistited campus over the Kato series two weeks ago. But, that is about it.

If you care to speculate, feel free to chime in.
