Several reasons: Rochester publics split into smaller schools rather than just a couple of very large schools. Previously they had a history of success in the AA. In the current 1A there is only 1 private (lourdes) and they were a jr. dominated team. Next year they will be one of the best in the state. Rochester and Mankato are the only cities big enough to field multiple teams. Transferring in Mankato for sports is discouraged, so they don't load up one team. In general the teams across southern mn. are too far apart to do much transferring. The talent is there, but it is more spread out. Also there aren't many teams that have a strong history of success in hockey like Roseau, Warroad, Duluth, etc. So you don't get as many of the good athletes going out for hockey.flatontheice wrote:Why can't Section 1 do anything in the State Tournament?davey wrote:Section 1AA/1A wins the Championship over 6AA/6A 7-1. Section 1 takes both the great 8 and Advanced 17 Championships.

Best of luck to all of these boys who earned their place. Like anything else, this is just one person's opinion - mine. At the risk of looking like I have too much time on my hands and not claiming to be the brightest hockey bulb, I’m going to throw some information out here and hope that someone helps me understand how this evaluation works for the new and improved Selects.
Section 1 - total of 9 (1st place)
Section 2 - total of 9 (5th/6th place)
Section 3 - total of 3 (last place)
Section 4 - total of 7 (3rd place)
Section 5 - total of 7 (4th place)
Section 6 - total of 9 (2nd place)
Section 7 - total of 6 (5th/6th place)
Section 8 - total of 4 (7th place)
On the surface only the Section 2 selects really stands out, but dig deeper. Sorry about not knowing the 5th/6th place game.
Section 6 has a good 1st game against what ends up to be the last place team, wins in OT, gets creamed in the final, and every one of their D and two of three (?) goalies make the final 51.
Section 1 "dominates" (previous post) in at least 2 of their games, wins the whole thing and only 3 of their F’s are selected?
Section 2, playing for 5th/6th and not much scoring, gets as many kids total taken as the first and second place teams, more than the 4th and 5th place teams, and 7(!) are Forwards, but yet, a goalie from any team that beat all of these 7 Forwards isn't selected.
There might even be a Defense player placed that didn't even play, at least not every game, that got selected from Section 5. The other two goalies taken are from the last place and 5th/6th place team.
Factoring in season stats makes it even more confusing. Can anyone make sense of on this?

Actually, Section 1 had 8 players make the cut, not 9. 4 forwards, 2 D and both goalies. What's interesting to me is that there are 4 kids that made the National festival last year as 16's and did not make the cut here. There are always a couple of questionable picks in peoples minds, but for the most part they get it pretty good.recenthockeyfan wrote:Best of luck to all of these boys who earned their place. This should absolutely be about getting the right kids in place. I only hope Mr. Schmidt's wrist heals well, and he, in fact, gets to take advantage of the spot he was given over another healthy lad that did and could continue to play at this time.
I'd really like a clearer window into that "intelligence gathering" of decision making. Obviously I'm not "in the know". Are you one of those guys, or do you just have your nose pressed against the foggy glass like me?

Why can't Section 1 do anything in the State Tournament?
Section 1 is just now (within the last year or 2) starting to really see the top teams in the section making bigger impacts than in the past......I think you will see a Section 1 team within the next 1-3 years definitely push into that State Championship caliber type team and win it. This is showing up at the Great 8 and the Select now and in the past it has not been as solid.[/quote]

Is it just me or does Nate Schmidt seem to be a tad bit injury prone? It seems I have read about him having a broken wrist and ankle previously. Not to take anything away from the kid's talent and is definitely one of the top defensemen in his respective age group, but just making a general observation.

Congrats to the kids who "made it", If like normal I would say about 20 of the 54 made it by playing well. Another 25 of 54 are like Nate Schmidt who is one of the top players at that age and should be on the team if your taking your best. The remaining 9 of 54 are either put on the teams because of somebody who is coaching or evaluating, same as the section teams, alot of east kids and I'am sure kids from other places don't even tryout. Thats to bad, they get a lot of exposure through selects. But it can get a little shadey when you have your High school coaches and youth coaches and I heard even some kids fathers were evaluating, it's not on the up & up for all. If it is, sounds like we will certainly see virginia at the excel next year, sounds like they had a pile of elites at both levels. But we'll see.
Is there any stats out on the kids that made the 54?

Over on Gopher Puck Live, Iceburg has all of the season stats for the 54 players selected. Most players have very good numbers for the season and while I know stats do not tell everything, i think they can be an indicator of how each player performed during the season. Only 2 forwards stats jumped out at me. One had 7 points for the year and the other had 5pts for the year. I do not know whether each player had some injury problems during the season or what, they just kind of jumped out at me. Not saying they are not deserving kids as the evaluation process is in the eyes of the beholder.eastranger19 wrote:Congrats to the kids who "made it", If like normal I would say about 20 of the 54 made it by playing well. How about last weekend, out of the 54 remaining, who were the big point getters and who did nothing, but still made it, I would bet that the 9 of 54 did'nt do much, and the remaining 45 contributed either points or +/-'s. Just how I've seen it in the past.
