That is correct - no background or explanation was given to U16 Blue .....Brooke was called Friday night when Hanmer did not show up to check in & for practice.PlayYourGame4 wrote:I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Audrey Hamner wasn't able to attend tryouts and Brooke Bartelt took her place on the 16s Blue team.
Makes you wonder about Oiler's opinion and how closely he was watching doesn't it?joehockey wrote:That is correct - no background or explanation was given to U16 Blue .....Brooke was called Friday night when Hanmer did not show up to check in & for practice.PlayYourGame4 wrote:I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Audrey Hamner wasn't able to attend tryouts and Brooke Bartelt took her place on the 16s Blue team.

17's
Just saying:
We were told that for the 17's there would be:
8 Forwards
5 Defense
1 Goalie
They said that results would be posted Wednesday or Thursday.

Just kidding.joehockey wrote:That is correct - no background or explanation was given to U16 Blue .....Brooke was called Friday night when Hanmer did not show up to check in & for practice.PlayYourGame4 wrote:I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Audrey Hamner wasn't able to attend tryouts and Brooke Bartelt took her place on the 16s Blue team.
Some other 16's I liked were F's Micheletti (Rosemount), Slattery (Centennial), Mason (Eagan) and D Duellman (Roseville) all whom I feel see the ice very well, pass first and skate hard every shift. All are great team players and would be very deserving.
A player’s linemates are very important. Our team 16's Red switched not only forward lines but also D lines. They also switched sides, which is hard for some players. I'm not sure if other teams did this. Players will always look better if they play with stronger linemates and players who actually pass or the same partner every game. I did see some individual play. Players who looked good but maybe missed a pass that should have been made to help others look good. A tryout is all about opportunities.
I personally feel picks could come between 16-20 forwards (10 are chosen) 10-12 D (6 are chosen) 3-4 goalies (1 is chosen) all players played great and some very good players will not be make it who probably should have. Good luck to all.

Well stated OnEdge! Unfortunately the only thing that comes from this is name dropping.OntheEdge wrote:Seriously though I don't see any good coming from speculating on potential picks. I think there are lots of deserving players and as the brochure says "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". As we've seen in the past, lots of players look at this site and such idle chat can create a lot of anxiety and possible false hope. Just let the evaluators make their picks and congratulate the girls picked on making it.

hockeyrube7, Unfortunately? Have you ever name-dropped? I've read some of your post and I have to say I normally like your posts.
I don't think there's anything wrong with mentioning girl’s names. Most of the girls mentioned in these forums are players who work hard and are appreciated. All of the girls I've named are players whom I feel deserve to be recognized (watch them and tell me differently). Players read this and want to hear when their hard work is paying off.
I'm pretty sure I have never mentioned my own daughter.
The only thing I'm sorry for is my writing style.

Name dropping, if you can't do that here, where then? The reality is there are individuals who were not at these festivals but are interested in how things went. There are others (who were there) are just sharing their opinions. Anyone taking any stock from this is doing so at their own risk, since its only one person’s opinion. If you are at all familiar with these names I think you can determine for your self if they are worth a mention. If you don’t then how do you know it’s just name dropping. IMO, if a kid made a big enough impression for someone and then that person felt compelled to post it (if you recall it was in response to someone’s request) then what the real harm is there. If the player ends up making it then the evaluator’s opinion is validated. If not then no one will remember. I agree with Melvy nothing wrong with mentioning a player’s name. At the very least you provide a little affirmation to a kid.

I don't see anything wrong with name dropping as long as people don't use the site to give press to their own kid, which happens from time to time. I also don't like it when coaches or other players get bashed. If people want to stay positive then there is nothing wrong with telling the truth about who played well, coached well, had fun ect. Just my opinion.

Agree with all of this. Putting names out here to promote a kid is fantastic, and have done so quite often. Name dropping by my deffenition is when one is out to promote their own kid or program, or those only around their kid to make them look better. In my opinion this is what happens most of the time, or as you call it free Press. You would have never seen my kids names mentioned here, nor kids around them, by myself or any others. I don't believe a biased opinion is a legit one.hockeyfan85 wrote:I don't see anything wrong with name dropping as long as people don't use the site to give press to their own kid, which happens from time to time. Melvin, you are an unusual case then, applaud you, and keep up the great work! I said once in the past, and can say it again, it would be nice to see those on here only mention names/teams outside their own area. Maybe this happens more than I think. I feel this would give us all a much more honest opinion of the tallent. This is what I do, believe it or not. Once again, unfortunately that is not always the case. Maybe this will change as girls hockey gains a fan base that would spread further than parents/grand parents, hard to say.
This is just my opinion of course and all means nothing over all. Just sharing thoughts. Enjoy!
Overall I agree with HockeyRube7 but I have to add my two cents too. I don't have a problem when someone singles out a player for special mention especially when it is a league game, tournament game, etc. I am however uncomfortable when people are singling out girls during Advanced tryouts for a few reasons. First, I think most of us pay lots of attention to our kids or pretty much follow the puck so singling out one or two kids is not a complete evaluation. Second, most of us have only watched a few games and may have only seen one game in which a kid had a bad/good day. Third, I think all too often people are singling out players to either promote their own kid or a kid of a friend. Finally and most importantly, there are girls that read this site and they are hoping to make it. By singling out a few (or in this case many) whether intended or not you are slighting others without sufficient basis. When Melvin says that he only singles out hard working deserving kids I think he fails to see that making such a statement is potentially hurtful. Are not the others (not mentioned) hard working and deserving? I think they are. I would guess that 90-95% of the kids at this level are hard working and deserving otherwise they wouldn't be where they are. And for what its worth I have some kids that I thought did very well that haven't been mentioned but I think its more appropriate to congratulate all of the kids, wish them luck and let the evaluators do their job. It is my understanding that there were 8 evaluators at each level that watched every game. I trust them more than the opinion of a few parents that may or may not have appropriate evaluation experience.hockeyrube7 wrote:Agree with all of this. If any girls are reading this please know that the opinions of parents on this board don't matter. Its the opinion of the evaluators that matter for who goes to Phase 4. Whether or not you go to Phase 4 know that you've achieved a lot by getting to Phase 3. All of your hard work is paying off. You are some of the top players in Minnesota.
For those that didn't make it to Phase 3 don't give up. It is my understanding that the MN Hockey people said there was a 50% turnover at Phase 3 this year. With hard work, next year can be your year.

Nicely said HockeyRube7 . I've mentioned my name in the past and would always do so again.
I do think it's ok to mention one's child if she were to make a certain team, tryout award. I don't think one should point out that their child played well though. Leave that to others. My daughter always plays great in my eyes and her name is (just kidding). I'm always hardest on my own child. I also would never say anything negative about someone else's child as some do.

OntheEdge,
If my child were to read this forum and say how come my name isn't mentioned. I would tell her don't worry and just do the best she can. As a father I would help her understand some kids do stand out. These are only people’s opinions. My daughter has told me while watching games/other players, Wow did you see that play or that player is awesome I'm going to try that. There's nothing wrong with pointing out a great/hard working player. Hopefully my daughter is wise enough to know that a forum is just people’s opinions.
I do think I've stated all the girls play great and some do stand out. Girl’s hockey has come so far and I love to watch all these girls play great hockey.

start a namedropping thread elsewhere...getting back on topic about the new setup of the tryouts....
i heard things such as....
-adding the extra phase conflicts with those in spring sports even more
-after the phase one, barely any cuts were made and some forwards had to play defense and vice versa to fill rosters...and some were still short palyers for phase 2!
-having a shortage of numbers to cut, caused for talent gaps in the lines that were noticeable.
-having to pay to enter and watch our daughters play after already paying over $100 for them to participate was ridiculous, especially since there was no notification of a gate fee utnil you arrived.
-i heard something about the 17's taking 54 instead of 51 causing an odd number of forwards and problems figuring out lines and keeping playing time even...especially when evaluators told coaches the last day that they wanted SET lines and one line had to rotate 4 players (paying same amount of money for less ice time than others)
after hearing all this we still have to keep in mind that no system is flawless and this is the first attempt aimed at allowing more players to get noticed and tryout, i beleive they will make minor changes for the next years since this was more of a learning experience for minnesota hockey as well. overall great job to all the players and good luck.

I agree with much of what you say. I agree that its just people's opinions and there's a life lesson for kids in that opinions don't really matter especially without knowing the motivation behind the opinion or the credentials of the person giving the opinion. However, I am uncomfortable with publicly singling out players in a tryout process. I have run tryouts many years in a different venue and have always found such talk to be counterproductive regardless of the motivation of the opining party.Melvin44 wrote:OntheEdge,

I do agree with you OntheEdge that nothing should be said until after tryouts and numbers would have been better than names.
hockeypunk_29,
As far as improved NDP.
-Friday night practice? not needed. Would rather have the girls play 3 games on 3 different days.
***One thing make sure not only 1 team has to play early am games. Also not have to play 2 fresh teams back to back. All teams should have to play in same size rink. I guess what I'm trying to say is make everything as even as possible***
-adding the extra phase conflicts with those in spring sports even more? (No more phases) maybe play the Saturday games at night instead.
-For sure only have 9 forwards istead of 10 or add another team?
-As far as paying admission? It raises money and as we all know hockey is expensive.
