I doubt there will be anyone like Phillippi walk-on straight out of high school. But if there were, maybe some of these names are in the running...
Yumusaklar, Lakeville South
Wigen, Woodbury
Strand, Centennial
Hanna, Centennial
Becker, Burnsville
You may think I'm crazy, but if Solei can walk-on, than some of these guys are capable. I honestly think a couple guys from the USHL and even a guy from the MJHL will make the roster.

And he walked on knowing he would probably never play and never get a scholarship. He walked on for the game, not the glory.rayfinkel wrote:If solei can walk-on he proved himself in jr's He was the NAHL player of the year before walking on to the Gophers.MNHockey75 wrote:I doubt there will be anyone like Phillippi walk-on straight out of high school. Solei could have played a much bigger role in schools across the country. There is not one high school goalie that is graduating this year from a Minnesota high school that can step into the Gopher program next year. Solei also just signed a pro contract with The Bakersfield Condors in the ECHL.

That's nice to hear, hopefully he can get some playing time wherever he goes. There are plenty of guys all around that can step in and play back-up to Kangas. The problem is when Kangas leaves, then what? I see they have no goaltending recruits to this date for the next two years at least. They are hard to find.grizz77 wrote:Solei could have played a much bigger role in schools across the country. He signed a contract with New Jersey earlier this week.boblee wrote:Joe Howe is a likely candidate. Has Frazee announced he's leaving yet?

Nevermind, I found the Frazee article. Good for him. The Devils think very highly of him.
As for Solei walking on, he was a great goalie with a great track record, he just wasn't offered scholarship by the U.
As for walk ons not getting a scholarship...that's why they are called walk ons

If I remember correctly, Joe is only a high school junior so he couldn't come next year. Kent Patterson seems to be the most likely candidate, with Eric Hartzell also being a possibility. As for the third string guy, your guess is as good as mine.boblee wrote:Joe Howe is a likely candidate.

I've heard numerous times Patterson had plans already. And Howe is in the USHL, so basically, age doesn't matter. He could easily take accelerated summer classes. I have heard Hartzell thrown around.Iceburg wrote:If I remember correctly, Joe is only a high school junior so he couldn't come next year. That's great news for Kent and for the Gophers.MNHockey75 wrote:Kent Patterson (The Blake School and Ceder Rapids, USHL) has committed to the University of Minnesota. Some people's wishes were probably granted with this news.

So now that Patterson is coming in as I am guessing the half ride goalie, the question becomes who will come in as the recruited walk on goalie? Perhaps a Minnesota kid who is playing in the NAHL right now? Like Solei was, a Coon Rapids native who played in Fairbanks.
Maybe an Eliot Okland - Fargo Moorhead, a Fargo, ND native, he would be eligible to pay instate tuition.
Or, Beau Christian - Marquette, originally from Moorhead.
Or, Nick Graves - Alpena, a Wisconsin native, also eligible to pay instate tuition.
I am guessing with Kangas and Patterson already on board, this 3rd goalie would have to be a character guy like Solei was and be prepared to not see any ice time other than the early season exhibition game...

How about Patrick Roy's kidgrizz77 wrote:The U needs 2 tenders for next year, who do they bring in?

I've been trying to get some information on Beau Christian from his father, Dave. It sounds to me like he has no set plans for next year. The U of M would be a great fit for him. It wouldn't surprise me if he is #3 next year.

Re: post 10344
I am guessing the decision for Christian will he want to go through the grind of another year of juniors or get on with his life and go to school. That school most likely will be a D3 school but it is college hockey non the less.boblee wrote:I've been trying to get some information on Beau Christian from his father, Dave. As a last year junior eligible player (1988 birthyear) next season, most likely he would have to play in the NAHL since they don't have an overage limit like the USHL does (4 overage players per roster).

Nice try but as a Major Junior player, he is not NCAA eligible. Would be fun to see though...ap4mvp wrote:How about Patrick Roy's kidHe could sure help the Gophers the next time they play the Sioux not during the game but after when the players shake hands and another fight breaks out.
