Mankato East Names New Coach

Post by Forget Flyer »

Aaron Anderson, who was the head coach at Waseca the past few seasons, has been named the head coach at Mankato East. He replaces Travis VanOverbeke, who guided the Cougars the past two years. Anderson, who is from St. Peter and is the brother of the baseball coach at Mankato West (Ethan), has had some success at Waseca. Since going to the state tourney in 2005-06, East has struggled, but they've got a large group of kids who will be juniors this year (11), who have played a lot in the last two years.

I think Anderson did a good job with Waseca. He did not have much to work with in Waseca. However he did a good job with what he had. Mankato East has a LONG way to go. Mankato West is a superior program and it will take a long time for East to catch up with them. West will always have a quality team if Ken Essay is behind the bench. I think that last season is the start of a bright future for the Scarlets. Some years will be better than others, but they will always be a quality team. Good luck to East and Coach Anderson regardless.

West has a right to be proud of their program and Essay is a quality coach, but to say East is a far inferior program is a bit of a stretch. From the 01-02 season thru the 05-06 season East was 9-3-1 vs West with 5 of those being blowout wins. East finished higher in the big-9 each of those seasons and had a better overall record, culminating with their trip to state in 06. The talent split is the main determining factor in these 2 programs. With a new coach the last 2 years at East they had some player defections which caused them to end up worse than they should have been. Anderson does have a large core of returning players (mostly juniors) to work with. That coupled with West's losses will make East much more competitive with them the next 2 seasons. It's not like the night and day difference you see between Jefferson vs Kennedy or Duluth East vs Central. At least not yet.

In other Big Nine Hockey news, Josh Solem of Faribault has left to take the head coaching job at Monticello.

Also, Jason Feldman of the Rochester Post Bulletin posted this info regarding Big Nine players at this year's Model Camp...

Hockey season never ends, eh? A number of players from Rochester and the Big Nine Conference will head to Minneapolis next week for the Men's Model Camp, run by Gophers coach Don Lucia at Mariucci Arena and Ridder Arena. The week-long camp will feature 12 18-player teams, including plenty of guys who have already committed to D-I schools.

Local players who will compete include:

Red Team (Team No. 1): Jordan Yaggy, G, Mayo. This team also includes standout forward Marshall Everson (6-1, 195) from Edina, who has verbally committed to Harvard.

Gold Team (Team No. 2): No local players, but Gophers recruit Zach Budish of Edina and St. Cloud State recruit Michael Lee of Roseau are on this team.

Black Team (Team No. 4): Owatonna D Kyle Kozelka is on this squad.

Blue Team (Team No. 6): No local players, but D Alex Doig of New Prague -- a team that should contend again in Section 1A, along with Rochster Lourdes next season -- is on this team.

Red Team (Team No. 7): Two of Lourdes' best players -- D Pete Spratte and F Tyler Voigt -- are on this team, along with Mankato West junior-to-be D Matt Campbell. Think Campbell might needle the two Eagles about the Section 1A title game from a couple months back?

Gold Team (Team No. 8): A pair of seniors-to-be at Mayo are on this squad, with D Rick Weber and F Brad Fisher.

White Team (Team No. 9): Three players from some of the best Section 1A teams are on this team -- D Dan Roschen and Bryan Mitchell of Red Wing, and F Schyler Adams from New Prague.

Black Team (Team No. 10): Two of the top-scoring forwards in Rochester last season are on this squad - Taylor Funk of Lourdes and Alex Whitney of Mayo.

Blue Team (Team No. 12): The Bruggeman duo from Mankato West is on this team -- a pair of seniors-to-be in G Tyler Bruggeman and F Andrew Bruggeman.

Teams will have four practices and five games during the six-day camp.
