Thoroughbreds 2009
The Thoroughbreds have 5 returning players for 2009 and will need to add at least 4 D, 9 F and 2 G.
Sounds like a number of top players are planning to try out for them and leave HS hockey.

team of misfits
it will just depend on how many players cant get along with their team mates, coaches or their parents think their little daughter is better than she actually is.
If you are a good player you will get noticed where ever you play!

Only kinda true...
Abe, I know your response was a little truth mixed with a little humor, but still probably somewhat harsh. Sometimes there are VERY legitimate reasons for why a kid would not want to play for her HS team - things that have nothing to do with the player or parents being problems.
It is true that there are problem families out there, but it's also true that there are coaches with issues, and sometimes it's just a mix / chemistry type thing.
Bottom line, I hope the T-Breds find some great players and have a wonderful year.

I think the question is not if you are good but where do you "develop further best".
Lundberg is on my daughters summer team she made a BIG jump training and developing last winter with the Thoroughbreds....would she have had the same jump with the Woodbury? And will the next two years devlop her further than if she had played 5 years of HS for Woodbury?
The girls I am hearing about who are planning to try out are very talented Sophmores who are looking for better coaching than they have from their current HS.

I think there are many reasons kids (and their parents) might want to play for the Thoroughbreds. Dissatisfaction with their high school team may be one of the reasons (e.g. not happy with the coach, parents or the competitiveness of their team) but it just might be that the kid and parent like the development offered by the Thoroughbreds or the opportunity to play against teams that are from around the country. Whatever the reason it is a difficult and personal decision to leave high school friends.joehockey wrote:I think the question is not if you are good but where do you "develop further best".

Marci from the Thoroughbreds is by far the best girls hockey coach that I have ever seen. She gets more out of her players and pushes them harder than any other coach in girls hockey. She sincerly cares about the kids she coaches and isn't afraid to show it. If our daughter were to get hurt playing a hockey game she is the only person other than us, her parents that I would want making decisions for for our daughters care. Marci is one of the big reasons for the Thoroughbreds success and I feel that she is the standard that all other womens coaches should aspire to.
I am glad you are so high on Marci but ask her why she was forced to resign as the head coach at Blaine HS you may not see her in the same light if she tells you the truth. Marci gets a lot of credit in girls hockey but she has never had to answer for a lot of things she has done in the past, she took the easy way out and resigned.

Can We Drop These Allegations Someday...
I have no idea what Marci supposedly did at Blaine a few years ago, nor do I really care. However, it seems sad that every time someone says something good about Marci that someone else has to dredge up old tapes from something that supposedly happened years ago. It seems so cowardly to anonymously keep throwing allegations out there.
For some people Marci might not be a great coach - fine then - move on and get coaching somewhere else. But for many girls Marci has done a lot to help them develop. Why can't we deal with who she is today...not rumors from years ago? She really has been a very positive influence for many, many girls.
Hey Hockey21, let it go!!

The same thing happened last year about this time. I mentioned how much my daughter liked Marci as a coach in CODP and a couple people jumped all over it about these phantom charges that I don't know (or care) anything about. They won't let it go--it's good chat room fodder.
Since the level of hockey in U19AAA is two or three clicks above HS hockey, especially focusing on the development aspect, I would imagine the club is very selective when choosing coaches. That's good enough for me.
And by the way, for all those who consider themselves 'purists' or 'traditionalists' because they prefer HS hockey over the T'Breds and U19AAA, the T'Breds were around 6 years before the first Girls' HS Hockey teams were formed--while High Schools were still dabbling in Ringette.

Whatever Marci did in the past is done and over with as far as I'm concerned. All she wants is the best from the kids she coaches and does everything in her power to get that out of the kids.
The Thouroughbreds are such a class operation. Sure it's a little spendy (about $5000 a year including travel) but they have welcomed my husband and me, into becoming part of their organization and that is something that we can't say about our daughters High School team. Yeah people whine about the Thoroughbreds stealing high school players but we see it as a great option for kids that want more than the MSHL can offer them in the way of games, practices and development. After you've seen what the Thouroughbreds offer, you will realize that most high high school coaches are a few steps down from Marci and the rest of the Thouroughbreds coaching staff.

Marci is a very good coach and our daughter has a very high level of respect for her as both a coach and person. She is very intense and expects the absolute best out of her players 100% of the time. I can see where, at the HS level where not all the girls are as committed, her style can rub some the wrong way. However, at the CODP and Thoroughbred level the vast majority of these girls are looking for exactly what Marci brings to the table.
Nothing but good things to say about Marci. She is one of the reasons my daughter loves CODP. Marci clearly states her expectations of the athelete and drives them to be the best they can be constructivly. My daughter is up in the air regarding possilby trying out for the Thoroughbreds. She has strong ties to her HS, but if the opportunity should arise she will give very strong consideration to playing thoroughbred hockey becase of the level of competition and development opportuntiy. With the advent of the new HS transfer rule I wouldn't be suprised to see the creation of more teams like the Thoroughbreds.
So here was Keepitreals post on the forum from USHOC and Hux showing who from Minnesota - Thoroughbreds are in bold - 5 of 12 graduating Thoroughbreds went D1.

What turned us away was... as a coach Marci definatley favors certain kids, the language used on the bench i don't think is appropiate, and you PAY- if you honestly add up travel, hotel, eating out and ice time way more than $5000. AND they haven't got out of the state of MN to Nationals as long as I have known about them. So i don't believe they get any more exposer to college coaches than the high school girls get with NDP, Jr. fest, Sr. fest, Prospects etc, etc. If you work hard on a high school team, spend some money on extra training even, you will get the looks with FAR less money. It just depends on your stituation... it's another option. Options are good. In the end we decided being home some on the weekends, having a life outside the rink is important too...While some of the highschool games might be a step down from Tbred level..some aren't, and many are catching up quickly.

Your right on all of the things above, The Thouroughbreds are not for everyone. From what we have seen, certain kids are favored in every hockey situation, there is bad language on the bench and the lockeroom just as there is in high school, If your good you will get some exposure anywhere you play, It is darn expensive and takes a commitment from the families involved.iceit wrote:What turned us away was... as a coach Marci definatley favors certain kids, the language used on the bench i don't think is appropiate, and you PAY- if you honestly add up travel, hotel, eating out and ice time way more than $5000. The big difference is 6 month season compared to 3 months. and the coaches (not just Marci) are really top notch where in high school sometimes the coaching is iffy. High Schools catching up quickly? I don't know about that. Their are certain players and lines that play at the level of the thoroughbreds but I don't see any complete teams that are as sharp. but it's all about choices and one persons choice isn't good for everyone.

Thoroughbreds History
The Minnesota Thoroughbreds were formed in 1987. Minnesota Hockey was hosting the USA Hockey Girl's and Women's National Championships in 1988 in Bloomington, Minnesota, and we wanted a team that could participate at the 15 and Under and 19 and Under classifications. The Minnesota Thoroughbreds went to numerous National Championships after that until Shattuck St. Mary's formed a team to participate at the 19 Under classification, and Shattuck has been the team that has advanced over the past few years to play in the National Tournament. The Minnesota Thoroughbreds participate at the highest amateur level with teams from across the United States that allows the players to develop and play at a high level.
The CODP Festival this weekend has two Thoroughbred Teams identified - will be interesting to see who the prospects are assigned to T-Bred designated teams. There has usually only been one team so must be lots of interest in T-Breds for next season. It is a real benefit to the Thoroughbreds to have the close relationship they have with CODP (by count CODP has more HS players (and NDP players) in the program than there are Thoroughbreds).
Should be a great weekend of hockey with teams coming into Minnesota and the two CADP boys teams competing also.

Yes it is good for Thoroughbreds and those not at NDP which is why it may be going on?
It is to bad for the '91 U17s at Lake Placid. I know Gina McDonald and Anderson are in CODP but I don't know about others maybe Komarek and Kortum?

I'm just wondering how many of these people that are supposedly trying out for the Thouroughbreds are going to follow through with it. $7000 is an aweful lot of money to fork out for a hockey season esspecially now, during tough economic times for some families. My daughter loves hockey but I could use that money for plenty of other things. It will be interesting to see how many follow through.
Good question.....if it cost $8000 to be a T-Bred and travel last year it could easily jump to $10,000 or $11,000 this year with the jump in fuel for air travel and gas for car travel. You can play HS and do lots of training for 1/3 to 1/2 that price.dochockey wrote:I'm just wondering how many of these people that are supposedly trying out for the Thouroughbreds are going to follow through with it. $7000 is an aweful lot of money to fork out for a hockey season esspecially now, during tough economic times for some families.
