This is not a tournament. This event was designed by several Division I Colleges/Universities on the East Coast, including University of New Hampshire, Brown, Providence, Boston University, Boston College, Harvard and others. This showcase is specifically designed to give our highly skilled players the opportunity to showcase their skills directly in front of a multitude of college coaches and have the opportunity to tour each college campus of interest – including meeting with the program coaches and touring each college campus.nipe87 wrote:what is this thing i went to the website and it confused me even more??
Please remember that this event is NOT a tournament – it is a privately designed showcase brought to us directly by the college coaches who desire to increase their exposure/recruiting of Midwestern players, specifically Minnesota . Each day, those teams involved in the event will play a scheduled game a college location (morning) and have the opportunity to tour the particular college and meet with the college coaching staff.
The Colleges and Universities specifically involved in this event:
University of New Hampshire
Boston College
Boston University
Brown University
Providence College
Harvard University
Northeastern University

It will be interesting to see the final roster. Is this a new "event" and what's the web site? Who are some of the actual college coaches managing this and are there teams from other states invited? How were the coaches chosen and how was the list of invited players developed? Have to admit, I'm a bit skeptical. Lots of great players on the list - do any of the players on the list have some insight into this? Until I see more facts, I think I might tend to agree with edinalover.

This is a new event that is designed by the East Coast coaches and it is supposed to be a variation of the Model Camp that Don Lucia promotes for the players in the mid-West. Since it is designed by the coaches out East, I do not believe that it is "checkbook" hockey.
I know that the people that run Team Minnesota are not trying to make a living off of the fees associated with their events and they have been very successful in assisting many young men with the national exposure that our players deserve.
If you feel that this is "checkbook" hockey, then I wouldn't consider the opportunity to skate in front of many East Coast hockey coaches, tour the campus' and meet the coaches that designed the program. This event was not designed by Team Minnesota and they have only accepted an invitation to bring two quality teams to the event along with six other teams from the United States and Canada.
Check out www.ushr.com as they began to cover the new event as of today. It sounds really interesting as it deviates from the normal public tournament track and focuses on player exposure; not playing for a trophy.
The website www.teamminnesota.org is a little confusing though as it doesn't give details for the event, but I do know that they are not accepting general registration for any player to sign-up so they are not using their website to sell the event. It appears as though they have identified a list of players eligible for participation and those players invited may or may not accept one of the few spots open.

Sounds like a good way for a kid that is interested in attending a college out east to get a little exposure to the colleges in that area. However, I would thik that if the coaches have put this together, they could offer the hockey up for free, considering they are basically using this as a recruitment tool. It is saving them tons of money by not having to fly out to the Midwest, pay for lodging, transportation, meals and salary.
It ends up becoming quite expensive for the players. 350 for the hockey, round trip airfare to the East Coast, five day hotel stay and meals for the player and at least one parent.

There are about four of these events that are so called "model camp" for the east coast.PlayersFirst wrote:This is a new event that is designed by the East Coast coaches and it is supposed to be a variation of the Model Camp that Don Lucia promotes for the players in the mid-West. It appears that those that received initial invitations have been part of the Team Minnesota program in the past.....
Team Minnesota has identified a list of pre-qualified players that have participated in our program in the past and will open registration to the first 24 Forwards, 12 Defensemen and 4 Goalies and field two teams (Minnesota Navy and Minnesota Gold) for the event consisting of 1990, 1991, 1992 and some 1993 players. We will divide each team into equal squads and will bring a maximum of 20 players per team. We are currently sending additional invitations out to 1991 born players and a few 1990 players. Once our 40 spots are taken, then the roster process will cease.

So in a way, it's sort of another AAA team. No tryouts, just been there done that, or sign up and hope to be one of the first ones in. Looks like good talent though. Has the appearance of Minnesota Selects or Super Series.gerryodrowski wrote:It appears that those that received initial invitations have been part of the Team Minnesota program in the past.....

The Road to College is put on by Chuck Hughes and Don Donato (brother of Harvard coach). This may be an excellent venue to look at Harvard.
The cost of the program was $699 for day participants and $999 for those players who want to board at Harvard - this of course does not include traveling costs and food.
Team Minnesota is charging $350 for the players to participate in this event, but I do know that they pay pick up some of the costs for those who are in financial need, as they always have. The fee also covers the ice time, referees, jerseys and socks. Not to mention that they always travel with at least 3-4 qualified coaches who need the expenses paid by the players.
Money shouldn't even be an issue here whether it is spending the dollars to attend the "Road to College" or the "Prospects Tournament". Hockey has always been and will always be an expensive sport and we are lucky in Minnesota that we don't need to pay $20,000 + to play AAA hockey like they do in other states.
The key to this event and any other event is not the cost, but whether you receive value for the money you put into the event. If you receive value, then maybe the cost isn't very important - especially when we are talking about a few hundred dollars. If you player has the ability to become exposed to a greater list of hockey coaches out East and beyond, then the small dollar investment may be meaningless in the long run - as long as you are not sepnding your entire paycheck going tournament tot tournament. You need to know when enough is enough.
I do know that Team Minnesota has helped many players with getting noticed by colleges across the nation and they have some nice relationships with scouts and division I college coaches. Maybe the knowledge, relationships and experience is worth the admin. ticket.

Team Minnesota - Beantown Collge Showcase & Tour
I just read on the www.teamminesota.org website that they have opened registration to any player who will still be in high school this coming year with birth dates during 1990, 1991 and 1992 - they will only accept a few 1993's with high school hockey experience.
Here is what I copied:
BEANTOWN COLLEGE TOUR REGISTRATION NOW OPEN TO ALL PLAYERS
The Beantown College Tour REGISTRATION process is now in full swing and we still have a few roster spots available for this event.
We are officially opening up registration for this event to any high school player who was born during 1990, 1991 and 1992 (1993's may apply, but they must have at least 1 year of high school hockey experience). Any player born between 1990 - 1992 may fill out a player registration for consideration to participate in this event.
The Team Minnesota Committee will monitor all applications on a daily basis and notify all applicants of their acceptance status. This is the same procedure that we used during the successful Minnesota vs. Michigan Hockey Series during May 2007, This way, we reduce the risk of missing a player who deserve this opportunity and there are a lot of players in that category in the state of Minnesota.
Feel free to register by "clicking" the Beantown College Showcase Registration on the left of this screen. Once you have successfully registered, a Team Minnesota representative will contact you shortly.
This is how Team Minnesota and Team Michigan selected their rosters for the MN vs. MI Hockey Series last May 2007. This way, all players who wish to participate may apply rather than waiting to be invited by the committee.
I have also heard that Team Minnesota may have some of the Team Michigan players joining the teams.

LOST
Rumor mill from an east coast buddy in Boston is they were terrible at best and even lost to Brandywine 13-3. We definately have the best hockey players in the world here and AAA hockey and it's effect on the rest of the country aren't showing at all at the high school level.

It was a 5 team "friendly showcase" put on by some major DI schools out East BC, BU, UNH, PC, etc. The teams included Minnesota, Ontario, Vancouver, Boston Jr. Bruins and Brandywine (Philadelphia). The rosters were made up of mostly 92 birth year players. Brandywine, Vancouver and Boston had three or four 91's. Ontario's roster all 93's. Minnesota's roster all 92's a couple from Edina, one from Shattuck and a player headed to Fargo (USHL). Minnesota played 2 games vs. Bradywine and it was a combined score of 13-3. 7-1 and 6-2.

[quote=" After reading the letter again it doesn't look like they went out there to win![/quote]
Don't know what letter you are reading. We signed up early and received many explanatory emails. The event was EXACTLY as billed. It was intended as a hockey college tour and NOT a tournament. It was an eclectic group of players, but all had high school hockey experience. Our family was VERY happy with the event - reasonably priced, good hockey, college tours and a chance to see the sights. I highly recommend it to anyone if it is held next year.
