Eliminating the U19 level definitely made the U16 level stronger. Overall it was pretty good hockey, not as strong as the International Cup but I thought better than the Walmart Cup. The most entertaining play was in the U16 South vs. U16 North game. The North was down 3-0 early in the second half and the South got called for 2 quick penalties. The North decided to pull their goalie for a 6-3 advantage in skaters to try to get back into the game. After the North controlled the puck for a while the South goalie poke checked the puck that was in the crease and sent the puck all the way down the ice and into the North goal. Its not often that you see a goalie get an unassisted goal. Wow, that is great. In one of my U10 team's games a similar situation happened. Typical of a U10 game, the bulk of both teams were on one side of the ice and the puck squirted out to the middle of the low slot. Our goalie skated out and took a swipe at it, and sent it down the ice. It just missed hitting the spot where the goalline extended climbs up the boards! A pretty good shot, to be sure.OntheEdge wrote:Eliminating the U19 level definitely made the U16 level stronger. I'll have to disagree. I thought it was basically OSextreme-South vs. N, E, W with 3 or 4 top players each. Wallmart cup had a very good Roseville team with some college players and the Blaze, Northern lights, Wild, and a couple of decent high school teams. Yes, the South team was solid and would have faired well at the Walmart tourney.OntheEdge wrote:Eliminating the U19 level definitely made the U16 level stronger. I looked at the South roster and you are right. They had most of the OsXtreme players, only missing a few who were too old to play at the U16 level. Obviously the experience they gained from playing U19 up until then, plus being together as a team for the summer, gave them a boost for this tournament.hockfan1980 wrote:I'll have to disagree. I see the East has 3 Shattuck girls on it.
The West was primarily the Schwan's Blues team with a few different players.hockeya1a wrote:did any of the other teams have girls that played together in the summer?MNHockeyFan wrote:I looked at the South roster and you are right. As for the East, it seemed that they had a lot of subs during the weekend. The second game Saturday there were 3 Jr. Whitecap players (Lorence, Marcotte and Slattery) but Sunday there was only one Jr. Whitecap player (Lorence). I don't know about the first 2 games. The printed roster didn't always match up with the players on the ice. I saw more players who were not on the roster on Sunday but the announcers used the correct names (rather than the rostered names) so I'm sure it was all legit.
The North had a few Grand Rapids girls that I recognized (the Illkainen sisters) but nobody else that I recognized.

I guess reasonble people can disagree Hockfan. At the Walmart Cup I saw some of the usual names (e.g. the Shooting Stars, Wild, Flames, etc.) but the jersey names didn't always match the players who occupied them, at least at the U19 level. In my opinion, there was only one strong team, the Shooting Stars and they pretty easily won. It seemed like many of the other teams were put together last minute and even though there were some good players on each team it seemed that due to unfamiliarity the teams didn't really play together well.hockfan1980 wrote:I'll have to disagree. As for the Northern Lights, I didn't see them play but it was strange that they were playing in a high school division. Typically the high school teams aren't as strong as AAA Allstar teams. There was a Wisconsin High School team in the AAA division. They weren't bad but I think they would have been more competitive in the High School division and the Northern Lights should probably have played in the AAA division.
I'm curious of how people would rate the summer U19 tournaments in the Metro. My opinion is as follows:
1. Schwan's Blues Invitational - Tier I was loaded with talent with the 2 Ice Cat teams, the Jr. Whitecaps, and others. Tier II was not as strong but was not too far behind and very competitive.
2. International Cup - Great tournament but not quite as strong as previous years. Many teams didn't play for various reasons. Travel costs and the fact that many girls were in New York probably had something to do with it.
3. Showcase Meltdown - I struggled with picking between the International Cup and the Meltdown for my second choice. The Meltdown was a strong tourney but didn't have many teams from outside the area.
4. Midwest Selects - Not even close to the top 3 and probably closer to the Walmart Cup in my ranking but I thought the hockey was better than the Walmart Cup.
5. Walmart Cup - Last year the U19 division was very strong but this year it was evident that many of the better players chose not to play in this tournament.
6. Stick It - Great cause and a fun kick off to the season but I'm not crazy about running time and pink ice. I also think the tourney wasn't as strong this year because Phase III Adv 16 and 17 tryouts were in progress that weekend.

Marcotte did not play any games she was there watching her friends and Slattery's younger Brother was playing at the U14 level not Joci.
I was there and thought the South's Stephanie Hatcher, Greer Vogel, Kelly, Lund, Menke East's Megan Lorence, Ashley Bye, Allie Duellman, Morgan Johnson(WBL) Madison Kohls (Shattuck's) North's Illikainen West's Mackenzie Miller all looked very good. I'm sure I'm forgetting some.
I know some people don't like when I mention names but wanted show that there were some great players.

My mistake, I thought I saw 3 Jr. Whitecap helmets on the ice with the East team on Saturday and I saw Mr. Slattery and Mr. Marcotte watching so I assumed that they were out there. My apologies.Melvin44 wrote:Marcotte did not play any games she was there watching her friends and Slattery's younger Brother was playing at the U14 level not Joci.

As far as mentioning names, I was one that thought it was inappropriate to mention names while the advanced tryouts were in process. Outside of this situation my opinion is that occasional name dropping is ok as long as people aren't doing it to selfishly promote their daughter and daughters of friends. Obviously its only my opinion and you have a right to do whatever you want.

Good list my daughter played in the following and would rate based on competition - this isn't really apples to apples. Scheduling of Phase Tryouts and NDP this summer had a big impact.
1) Schwan Invitational - did have best overall field (though lacked St. Croix Saints)
2) Two Nations League - this is actually kind of 4 weekend tournaments but for the money competition is strong and unique and can't be beat.
3) Meltdown - very good field.
4) International Cup - very disappointing showing - field was way off what you expect at the U19 level - NDP had a big effect and the Press Ice Cats decided to go out to the Chowder Cup - this tournament may be losing following outside of MN?
5) Stick It - isn't really a tournament more of an event for a good cause - really hurt by over lap with Phase III.

I didn't rate the Two Nations League because I didn't think of it as a tournament. I agree with you that it was good hockey and a great deal. If leagues are included, then I would have to put the Showcase College League up near the top of the list too. Good competition at an even better price since you didn't have incur the $300-$500 (i.e. Cooper-Durango) cost of traveling to Canada.joehockey wrote:I'm curious of how people would rate the summer U19 tournaments in the Metro. 3) Pinicle hockey Showcase (at Shattuck) Excelent exposure, we heard from 3 prep schools and 2 colleges from it
4) UMD Hockey Camp Posiibly the best coaches but to many younger players
5) Quickskills hockey camp well put togeather, lots of skating, great instruction
6) Showcase Summer college Hockey league Every game was a battle, learned to lift game to another level, and learned about leadership
7) Walmart cup an alright tournament but really lacked any exitment for the girls,
8 ) showcase Spring Hockey League gave our daughter a chance to score lots and build confidence
9) OS Spring Hockey League The coaches semed disinterested, it ended up being cheap ice time with varied competition

You should really try and get your daughter some more ice time, judging by her schedule, it looks like she hasn't seen a rink....in a day or so

I know fingal and her daughter. It's the kid thats driving the hockey in that family. We see her at the arena asking boys teams if she can practice with them on days when she has nothing going. The girl is driven more than most and loves hockey, I know she begged her dad to send her to some school out east this year just so she could play hockey, but I guess he said no. Look for her in the Olympics someday if her body holds togeather

Well thanks, she's a hard worker but I don't know about the olympics. She did want to attend the Ottawa hockey acadamy this coming year and both my husband and I did say no because we seen no real difference between the top players here, out east or in Canada, she's a good Kid, but we worry about her pushing herselfto hard. last winter after she broke her collarbone we caught her sneaking out at night so she could go skating on the town rink. She just loves it so we try to support her the best we can.dochockey wrote:I know fingal and her daughter. It's the kid thats driving the hockey in that family.
