Either follow the rules, or form your own 'non-MN Hockey' teams and leagues. The only thing stopping these schools from forming their own teams are themselves.

No one ever said that you had to be registered with USA Hockey/MN Hockey to be able to play hockey in the state.

If you want to play in a District sponsored league, or go to a USA Hockey sanctioned tournament, play by the rules that 95% of the other players have to observe.
I maybe wrong, but I don't believe that USA Hockey has anything to do with anything. Independent teams can form and still be USA Hockey sanctioned, just not MN Hockey sanctioned.

My hope is that a couple of independent clubs DO form their own league and create a healthy competitive alternative to MN Hockey. Competition is good...and the best part is that it creates additional options for families during the winter. If this happens and deemed succesful, then hopefully more clubs form in the future including school sponsered youth teams. We are already seeing this with Shattuck-St. Mary's and Minnesota Made. AAA hockey has become HUGE in Minnesota over the summer months, and it will only be a matter of time before they start hitting the ice in the winter months as well.

Good old boys, What did you guys think when showcase hockey came onto the scene? Doesn't this program offer additional hockey and make a profit doing so?
I'm curious to hear what the traditionalist thought when this program was offered?
Did you rip on it?
Were you critical?
Were you threatened?
Read my lips I've devoted blood, sweat and tears.

Sanctioned Teams

Post by HockeyFan55 »

A team is USA Hockey sanctioned ONLY by registering through their affiliate, in this case MN Hockey. You can't register a sanctioned team in MN without it being both.

All of Shattuck's teams are registered with MN/USA Hockey.

and that's who we need to hear from--one of the kids. All of the bantams need to make themselves heard on the issue so that the decisions aren't made by the parents, but by the people in impacts.

The information below was posted on the STA school website. Does anyone have further information?

Saint Thomas Academy Junior Gold and Bantam Hockey

After a successful Bantam effort last season, a group of Saint Thomas Academy parents have organized a Junior Gold B hockey team and a Bantam B hockey team for the upcoming 2008-09 season. The teams will be called Saint Thomas Academy and wear the STA colors, but will not be part of the school’s Athletic Department programs. School administrators and coaching staff are supportive of our undertaking, but it is a parent-driven initiative.

Informational Meeting
A meeting for interested players and parents is scheduled for Thursday, August 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the STA cafeteria to provide additional details and answer questions.

Skills Clinic
Interested players must participate in a skills clinic scheduled for the following dates and times:
Saturday, September 6: 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. – Bantam
Saturday, September 6: 3:40 – 5:10 p.m. – Junior Gold
Sunday, September 7: 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. – Bantam

Interested families should R.S.V.P. to one the individuals listed below.

They will play under Prior Lakes Association and will be in D6 and in D6's end of year Tournament to go to Regions.

Google search: "St. Thomas Academy Junior Gold Bantam" (without the quotes) and then click on the "cached" link.

That seems like a better plan than the way it was done last year (playing in one district during the season and another district for playoffs). I assume that the players will all need to register with and then get waivers from their home associations, right?

They are doing exactly what they were told to do by MN Hockey.

MN Hockey is not going to recognize private schools as a 'community', but will not stop anyone from getting a waiver via the process that is in place. D6 is the most liberal disrict for getting a waiver.

Just to clarify -- two waivers are required for each kid (one from the individual player's home association and one from D6), correct? And the home association must provide the waiver before D6 can consider providing a waiver, right?

How will this effect Prior Lake players? Are they merged or separate teams?

Technically, four, home assn, accepting assn, releasing district director and receiving DD.

Separate unless numbers justify something else.
It will be Prior Lakes decision.

SWPrez wrote:Tuna,

I don't think attacking volunteers that run District 1 on this board is appropriate. While some may not like decisions that are made by local hockey association boards, district boards, or even Minnesota Hockey Boards - these are all volunteers whose tombstones one day will read that they made a difference in kids' lives.

Every once in a while I am approached by a parent angry about something that has affected their player. I offer the parent the opportunity to swing by our board meeting to discuss or, better yet to PARTICIPATE in a committee to deal with how to handle a situation better. These parents always disappear immediately.

Minnesota Hockey is not the Tae Kwon Doe Studio, Foss Swim School, or even Dance School --- where you pay a very large sum to a private, for profit business. Minnesota Hockey is expensive, but affordable due to the large commitment of volunteers - from youth coaches to District Directors. I have relatives on the East Coast that write a check for $2,500 before their blades can even touch the ice and the season runs in the $4-5k range because everyone gets paid. Is this where we want things to go?

Please keep this in mind, attend the next District 1 meeting, and take a volunteer position on the D1 board (I believe there may be a few opportunities there). But, please don't rip volunteers that are making a difference in kids' lives doing the best they can do with their limited volunteer time.
Nice touch! Like the comment.......
