MGHCA Fall Development League
The Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association is organizing an additional fall league that will run on weekends from September 20 to October 26. Sessions will feature both development/practice time and games.
For this inaugural season they will field 4 teams. Tryout applications have been sent to "Junior Festival and Freshman/Sophomore Development Camp participants, and to those players who were the highest ranked players in last springs MGHCA & Minnesota Hockey tryouts". They are also discouraging those who are already committed to another league (like the Midwest Girls Elite League) from trying to play in this one as well.
Tryout sessions will be held on Sept. 12th and 13th.

This is great and should allow another top 60 players - seniors and under class players who would like to develop ahead of the HS season.
Combination of the Junior Fest and the Freshman/Sophmore Camp seems a little odd but should be good (guess both are run by the coaches) - I wonder if there is a way for other underclass players to tryout if they don't have the other League to play in (weren't invited or didn't make)? I think because of CODP and OS the Freshman/Sophmore camp has not drawn the strongest group out of the cities - but it has been a great development program.
The Boys HS Fall Elite League has kind of a Elite I and Elite II in some ways this will be similar in that it will form a way for a larger group of skaters to be going before the season.
Great opportunity.

Make sure you and your daughter have both checked your email. The main contact is Tom Maeckelbergh - tmaeckelbergh@yahoo.comnothernewguy wrote:Did Freshman Sophmore camp participants receive invitation letters to this yet? Our daughter was at the Freshman Sophmore camp and has not gotten anything in the mail.

Tryouts for this new league will be held this Friday and Sat
Does anyone know if the tryouts are open to spectators and the time/location?

Will they get enough players that they will need to have tryouts? I'm thinking the good players, the ones who feel "snubbed" by the "Elite League" are going to do other things!g-hockeymom wrote:Does anyone know if the tryouts are open to spectators and the time/location?

To anyone that would do this, get over yourself, please. Both of these leagues are a great start. And being "snubbed" is going to happen at some point. Do you want to play hockey or not?ExecutionTrumpsStrategy wrote:Will they get enough players that they will need to have tryouts? Too be honest though I'm a bit curious on this also. More to the question would be, if they do run short, can they get over there own ego's and invite those that were snubbed over all for both leagues, and make a great idea a success? Doesn't sound like it at this late date. I still ask the same question, why is this not an open invite, there are try outs after all?

More options than this.....Showcase still runs a league and although the teams aren't AAA caliber there are many top players on the teams.....plus, it's about half the price!hockeyrube7 wrote:Do you want to play hockey or not?
Simple, not all of the right kids would make it!hockeyrube7 wrote: I still ask the same question, why is this not an open invite, there are try outs after all?

Cost would be the bigger issue, and there are tons more options. Isn't Os running a league also, what's the cost there? Many other leagues I hear also, any that some can name?Silent But Deadly wrote:More options than this.....Showcase still runs a league and although the teams aren't AAA caliber there are many top players on the teams.....plus, it's about half the price!hockeyrube7 wrote:Do you want to play hockey or not?
I guess that would make this no different than NDP, from what I have heard and read. So if they got it wrong in the first place, why not try to correct that here?Silent But Deadly wrote:Simple, not all of the right kids would make it!hockeyrube7 wrote: I still ask the same question, why is this not an open invite, there are try outs after all?
There is kind of a group left out if you didn't do phase or fr/so camp tryout you aren't invited? For those who get the option it should be a great League. There are other options this fall in the Metro outside of the Elite League and the MN Coaches League.
Winny Brodt and OS launched a HS League to try and cover the Wakota League that Bill Wild so successfully led for the last 5 years. I think the cost is $190 to play not sure of details - I think they started play last weekend - Stillwater, Irondale...others have teams. I am not sure if all the teams are full.
There is a great 3x3 HS League being run at Highland by Greg Doyle cost is $70/player. I think League is full but may have openings for subs.
CODP has been running a fall program and team.

I think there are so many programs available for girls that players and parents aren't able to do everything. My daughter was invited to play, however decided to focus on Herb Brooks Training. She wishes Jeff Palmer was still training as his super skate program she learned a lot and it was inexpensive.

It would appear that this league never got off the ground. Not a word here about how it's going, and I just checked the revamped MGHCA site and there is no mention of it there either. The last communication to the coaches said they were looking for just a few additional players to fill in...very strange that there's been no further announcements.Silent But Deadly wrote:Pretty quiet......are they playing? I can't believe someone wouldn't have posted...already two weeks into it.
Maybe they will try it again next year and get a little earlier start and invite more girls to play.
I hope that is not the case!
The Elite League has been a great success and is planning year two. I hope the two Leagues find a way to get top girls on the ice next fall.
The Boys have an Elite I and Elite II League - these two Leagues could work together to form a similar approach. I think the key is to announce now/soon plans for next year and how players will be picked or tryout - there is no perfect system but with fore planning and early announcement this could be very successful and end up with 60-80 girls (depends on 3 or 4 teams if the League expands?) and the MGCHA with an equal or larger number.
