Interesting looks like the U16 team is indeed playing the last weekend in October for the SSM U19 within the League. The U19 will be in MB. I am not sure how MN hockey and USA hockey are getting around the age limits?

Both the U16 and U19 are in the Tourney at SSM the next weekend.

The U16 group is a good group.

I sure hope this doesn't recreate the issue of last year where teams went to Shattuck with kids who were U19.....I am not sure how MN hockey and USA hockey are getting around the age limits. The U16 group is a good group - but guess we won't get the great head to head face off:

That's right. Last year there were a few problems with the Shattuck Tourney and the OS league as well. First, it was a U16 tourney so the older girls did not qualify but I think they changed it to a U19 tourney. I remember that the Tourney was almost canceled until SSM revised the Tourney last minute. Second, girls that were still U14 eligible under Minnesota Hockey were prohibited from registering and playing on a B&A team unless the girl played High School [edit] Hockey the previous year. Third, and I'm not sure on this one but I thought Minnesota Hockey (or is it USA Hockey) prohibits a registered U19 team from playing a registered U16 team but maybe there is some kind of waiver possibility. I think U16 would be 91[edit] birth years or younger under USA Hockey but under MN Hockey young 90s[edit] (DOB after 6/30/90[edit]).

From the MN Hockey Handbook:

"D. Interlevel Play - There shall be no interlevel play (games or scrimmages) between divisions (i.e. Peewee vs. Bantam, 14U vs. 12U) or between classifications (A and B, B and C or A and C teams), with the exception of Youth 16&Under and Junior Gold "B". In special circumstances where interlevel play between classifications is appropriate, approval of the cognizant District Director(s) must be obtained. Interlevel play is not permitted in invitational tournaments or MH playoff tournaments, with the exception that Youth 16&Under teams may participate in Junior Gold "B" invitational tournaments. Teams violating this provision may be declared ineligible to compete in any MH sanctioned invitational tournaments and the MH district, regional and state tournaments for the current season, and, in case of flagrant violations, for such further period of time as the district director shall deem appropriate. House league and city recreational league teams must be registered as C teams if they intend to play other teams outside of their hockey community. District Directors may permit a B or C classification team from small cities or newly developed programs to play in a higher classification league if there is no comparable classification league available."

I'm wondering how USA/MN Hockey registered Elite teams can play both SSM U16 and SSM U19 registered teams. Maybe someone out there can fill in the blanks.

I noticed that Molly Byrne is on the roster - transferred from Totino Grace after just one year there.

She has lots of talent - why did I think she played for BSM - did she start there and then go to TG?

Actuallly Armstrong, BSM, TG, Shattucks and probably T-Breds when she's old enough.

Wow! 4 schools in 4 years and only a 93! Is she going for a record?

Molly Byrne played in the boys youth hockey program at Armstrong, eventually making the PeeWee A team. Went to Benilde and played some as an 8th grader on Varsity. This team was loaded so making varsity was a real accomplishment. She then transferred to Totino and was a key player for them as a freshman. After attending the SSM summer camp she decided to enroll and is now on their U16 team as a sophomore.

I don't know the reasons for the 4 moves I am sure it is logical. She is a player with good size and speed and always plays with an edge. She should do well in the SSM program - she is in 10th grade right?

Megan Cox of New Richmond is another talented new player on the SSM U16 she is a soph. and has been a two time NDP player out of Wisconsin/Central District. She has played with the St. Croix Saints the past three summers and in the Two Nations League. Great kid who can play D or F.

Yes, she's in 10th grade. And actually she's made just two moves as far as high school is concerned: BSM to Totino, and Totino to SSM.

Not sure why it matters, she is at Shattuck's now and so she will get to play the Elite's as a U16.

League practices kick off tomorrow night and first games are Saturday night.

Sunday in St. Cloud the Jr. Whitecaps played the Shattuck Prep team and lost 3-0 though it was scoreless halfway through the game. The N. Starz played the Shattuck U16 on Sunday and lost 3-1. Will be interesting to see if any of the three HS League teams can beat SSM Prep or SSM U16 this fall.

Have my doubts about being able to beat the SSM Prep team, but you never know! I do think they will be very competitive with the U16 team, maybe even have an edge, especially by the last weekend when they should be more used to playing with each other.

SSM prep team is the best in this state, why would anyone want to leave that team to go to the Tbreds....

Not sure if you're confused or not, or which player you might be referring to, but the T-breds don't play in this league.

I think comment was on Molly Bryne.

The SSM Prep and U16 were both at SCSU Showcase. Bryne and Cox looked very good for the U16 team - they beat a talented N. Starz 3-1 in the final game. The SSM Prep looked strong beating Balmoral Hall 3-1 and the Jr. Whitecaps 3-0.

I agree I don't know if the HS teams can beat SSM - but that needs to be a goal to play well and compete hard in every match. The HS teams in the Elite League will have to play well and press SSM Prep for them to continue to stay involved in the League or else there is a future danger that they will enter the U16. The U16 commented last weekend that they are looking for stronger competition.

Yes, maybe it was but Molly Byrne did not leave SSM to go to the Thoroughbreds (not that I've heard anyway).

I'm sure they will compete hard and do their absolute best in every game. It will be very interesting to see how they do against the Prep Team, one of the very best U19's in the Nation. Hopefully they will be good close games.

Interesting. According to the website the SSM U19 team is playing in the Elite League but not in the SSM tourney that Joe mentions. Therefore the HS Elite regular teams ("Elite regular" kind of an oxymoron isn't it) are playing the upper level SSM team and the HS Elite All Star team is playing the U16 team. It seems like it would be better competition-wise to do it the other way around.
Maybe I can clear up some of the confusion. SSM U16 taking place of Prep the weekend of Oct 25 while Prep travels to Manitoba. The "SSM tourney" the following weekend appears to have two brackets U16 and U19. SSM Prep plays Brampton, Notre Dame AAA and Ontario Hockey Academy. SSM U16 plays Dallas Stars Notre Dame AA and Thunder Bay. The Elite AllStars are scheduled to play Crunch, Thoroughbreds and The Edge School. It should be good hockey for all.

So here is the current Upper Midwest Elite Girls High School League Schedule - League plays weekend 1 & 4 at Super Rink, weekend 2 split between SSM and Super Rink and week 3 at National Hockey Center at St. Cloud.

I watched the Wednesday night pracitces - this will be high paced physical hockey - very entertaining. If you like Girls HS hockey this will be 4 great weeks of competition to view.

Make sure to catch SSM in action (U19 or Prep first three weekends and U16 on the final weekend) - you will see players skating and playing a team game - the MN HS girls will need to play a similar game to compete well. Cost is $5 for 19 and older and free for 18 and under.

I don't disagree....it is cheaper than a HS game ($6? for adults) and free to all kids and students. What is the old saying you get what you pay for? It should be very entertaining hockey to watch.

Agree, yet would this not lead to the possability of losing a bit of a fan base that is so hard to build already?

I agree on the gate

Post by hshockeyfan91 »

As a parent of a player I am very appreciative of the opportunity the league provides for girls.

However, I would much rather pay an extra $100 or something, not have to pay by the game and not have to volunteer to staff the ticket taker job. I understand it takes money to buy ice, pay for refs, etc., but a gate is a pain. So, charge each kid a little more and be done with it!

Also too bad most of the games are on the back rinks at Schwan's - not spectator friendly!

I am sure they are trying to follow the successful boys model but bring up tomorrow at the parent player meeting at 4 PM or send to league organizers to address from website via e-mail: info@girlselitehockey.com

I hope all the parents feel lucky enough to have kids in this League support it and make it a big success for the current players and the future of the League. I have heard from many parents who have kids in or through college that say they have worked for 6 years to get some type of League like this in place - it is a great opportunity for MN HS players and should expand over the next few years to allow more players to participate.

Yes back rinks should be practice only other than 5 it is ok,

Also it would be nice if something was in the south Metro and not always Blaine and Shattuck, Maybe Like Burnsville, Bloomington, or SLP.
