I would encourage people to go see these games and support the League it is great hockey - this weekend the League has split venues. SSM games are in Faribault - so for those of you in the south metro or in the southern MN great hockey close by. Saturday morning it is at SSM while Saturday night and Sunday morning it is at the county arena in Faribault. The HS vs. HS games this week will be at the Super Rink.

talkhockey wrote:Ok Oilers08, maybe they didn’t miss the mark but they defiantly strayed a little from center. Passages from the original “Let’s Play Hockey” article;
The Upper Midwest High School Elite League was formed in 2001 to help the top elite players reach their optimal development by the end of their high school competition. Sufficient games against elite players of similar abilities has been the model since inception. It will continue to be the model for both boys and girls.
“The girls program will operate basically the same as the boys,” Brodt said. “We want the girls to get that extra development that they seem to now be missing in their junior and senior years.”
The league expects to have large numbers of DI and DIII coaches at league games looking for prospects.

Don’t get me wrong I think this league is great. It’s the next step in the evolution of the Girls game here in Minnesota. I just believe that they can accomplish their objective with juniors and seniors, that’s all.
Here here! Againg great comments, Talkhockey! Go a head and get me wrong, it really matters not. I still don't understand the goal of this league. Are we just trying to highlight the best U8 through HS, or are we trying to give those that haven't been seen a chance? I'm completely confused as to the purpose? Let me digress, several senior and juniors that might have been seen, or at least were competitive, now have no chance, yet a 9th/10th grader is in the eye's of the college coaches. What sense does that make? I'm really not sure we are headed in the right direction here. You are right, those who are running the league can do what ever they want.

Joe - Thanks much for the heads up on the schedule discrepancies. Looks like:

1. the pairings have all switched (from the original schedule)
2. the locations are wrong on the Elite League web site for games 2 and 3 in Faribault this weekend (should be Faribault Ice Arena for both [directions above] NOT SSM)
3. the game time for Saturday night's game has changed from 8 PM to 7:30 PM.

We will investigate and try to get both sites in synch with each other.

Yes with all the changes it would be helpful if someone could post the final, correct schedule for all of this weekend's games!

They are working on them sounds like Monday or Tuesday they will be up. Boys have a fully functioning site but since the girls is new it doesn't have everything yet. I will post if I find location early next week.

SSM 7 East 2

East scored first and it was 1-1 after 1 with SSM scoring at the horn. It was 4-1 after 2 - SSM scored with 5 seconds left in 2nd period. SSM had 66 shots on goal and East had 35 so lots of action. Penalties were 9 for East and 7 for SSM.

East played much better than last week - in the first they killed a number of penalties including a 5-3. You just have to play a perfect game against SSM tonight the East played half a very good game but kind of wore down and tried to win in alone versus continuing strong team play. Cohen and Decker each scored 2 G & 3 A for SSM.

MNHockeyFan wrote:By joehockey's count 53 out of the 60 players (88%) are either juniors or seniors, so I'd say that the upperclassmen ARE the ones being highlighted. The league's first communication said that "eligible players are current High School age and will be entering 10th-12th grade in the Fall of 2008". So the only exception they made was to allow just one 9th grader in out of 60 players, which shouldn't be viewed as any big deal. Plus it's their league and they worked very hard in organizing and getting it off the ground, and for this you have to give them a whole lot of credit. Then again as joehockey points out they show up at the games and go out of their way to interact with everyone in attendance, being very open to ideas and input, that's even more admirable. I'm sure they'll take all this into consideration when deciding what changes might be good for next year.

P.S. My only suggestion would be to open up the tryout process a little more, so more kids get a legitimate chance to participate.

Older and younger Players

Post by upnorthguy »

A few of my constituents from the cities seem to be upset over the try out procedures for this league. My daughter is from the north and I know she is average and really not involved with this nor will probably ever will be.
But, the observation of this format is lame. Juniors - Seniors only as was advertised. I feel sorry for a few that I know who should have been there and they have to observe this. Not to mention a few very good underclassmen who did not get a opportunity. How did these underclassmen that were chosen even get to skate on the ice with these older players. Were they waiting outside the rink waiting for someone to fall or did there parents become and opportunist and work their majic. As far as the organizers. Shame on you. You build years of integrity and and you let it slip in an instant. Organizers put yourself in the shoes of the juniors and seniors that were left out because of the underclassmen. As far as representaion of underclassmen. From what I here they missed the boat there. My Holy angels informant tells me there is a 94 player from the OS fall league who is outstanding.

I understand some people want to and maybe deserve to beat this League up...but consider that it didn't exsist and for maybe 8 years people have tried. This group in May got it done - stop throwing rocks or the same rocks - they will improve & are learning a lot. Today again both John Russo and Eric Johnson were up at the Super Rink - they are trying to make this better for MN HS girls they are talking about next year. This League should grow and should allow MN girls to get better competition and exposure than they can get only playing in the HS season and it is a great prep for the HS season.

The SSM team all appears to be on D1 track - the girls that have been in this league have competed - it has allowed MN girls to see what college level of play is - some of this group will play D1 and others D3 but most should have a chance to play. There are maybe 15-20 top girls not in this League for travel, injury or fall sport reasons.

Few scratches this weekend in some of the East Metro Games with injuries and soccer sectionals - there were girls out on some of the other teams but not sure who:
Lauryn Morris Park Cottage Grove 91 D - injury 2.33 games
Lauren Zrust Blaine 91 F - soccer/injury 3 games
Nicole Stumpf Hill Murray 91 F - soccer 1 game
Lauren Charpentier Stillwater 91 F - injury 3 games
Marissa Brandt Hill Murray 92 F - injury 3 games
Hannah Brandt Hill Murray 93 F - soccer 1 game

Joe,

Not sure if West has 3 wins?

Outstate girls missing,

Alex Nelson Andover 91 (2 games)
Megan Gilbert Andover 91 (3 games)
Rachel Bona Coon Rapids 92 (2 games)
Ashley Stenerson Moorhead 91 (1 game)
Erika Magnusson Fergus Falls 91 (1 game)
Rose Alleva Red Wing 92 (1 game)
Amanda Monkman Roseau 92 (1 game)

I'm sure the West also had girls missing.

Just one more weekend of play for the high school girls to get a win over the SSM U19 team. Based on what I've seen so far, SSM has dominated just about every game, if not always on the scoreboard at least in terms of overall playmaking, puck possession, shots on goal, etc. Much of this is due to their two stars, Decker and Kessel. Without those two it would certainly be a lot more even. Last year SSM probably would have been even more dominant, with the Lam twins who are already off to a great start with the U at the D1 level. But no question even without them the current team is very very good, better than I expected to be honest.

It will be interesting to see how the Elite teams fare against their U16 team. As of Sunday morning they were undefeated at 8-0, so they must be very talented also.
