Pre-Season Scrimmages

Post by MNHockeyFan »

Use this thread to post info on pre-season scrimmages and your impressions of the teams.

Big caveat: the scores don't mean much at this early stage as coaches will use these to evaluate "bubble" players", experiment with different positions and line combinations, work on power plays and penalty killing, etc.

The Duluth Northern Stars will again host many different teams from around the state in their November 7-8 Jamboree, including Eagan, Hill Murray, BSM, Eastview, Breck, Hastings and possibly others? The Northern Stars already have a preliminary roster up (don't they have tryouts?) at: http://mshsl.org/mshsl/showroster.asp?a ... school=134

Hard to believe tryouts start in just a few days, and we'll be seeing teams starting to scrimmage each other in about a week.

pre season scrimmagefest

Post by Hansonbrother »

I know Roseville is now hosting one (scrimmage fest) next saturday with Edina, Centennial, and Henry Sibley. That should be a good guage for where your team is at and where it needs to be.

Who else is hosting out there?

I know that Cloquet is hosting November 14-15. I'm not sure what teams will be there but last year some of the teams were Burnsville, Maple Grove, Hopkins Cloquet and Edina.

Pre Season Scrimmages

Post by bghockey »

Austin, Mahtomedi, Mankato West, Marshall, and New Ulm are all traveling to Mound Westonka on Sat. Nov. 8th for a Scrimmagefest. All but Mahtomedi were ranked in the final top 20 Class A last season. Each team will have four scrimmages that day.

Great question I think EP scrimmaged the SSM prep the past few years.

Seems like the SSM U16 played Simley last year in a regular season game?

On the boys side the SSM Prep team plays one or two (real) games a year against MN high schools. As you would expect they usually dominate but last year Benilde managed to beat them by a goal, even though SSM outshot them by a wide margin.

For the upcoming Chaska girls scrimmages it will be SSM's U16 team (checked website). Based on what I saw last weekend in the Elite series, I believe SSM U16 would win almost all their games playing most MN high school teams. Even though they went 0-2-1 against the three Elite teams last weekend, they competed very well and probably could have done better. So it would take a very top-level high school team to compete well against them especially with the second and third lines - team depth would be an issue.

it should be a very good early season tune up for the girls then.

Edina vs Roseville close game

Scores mean nothing at this point so I think its worthless to report them. I will say that Roseville was impressive and Edina and Centennial are very good too. Centennial was a little harder to judge since they were using the scrimmages as part of their tryout so they were working with 20 or so skaters in different combinations. Roseville appeared to be in midseason form. Edina had their good and bad moments but they have a new coach and they are working on a new system so it will take a little time to put it all together. For those that insist on declaring a winner, I would have to say it was Roseville with Edina second based on puck control and better scoring opportunities.

What, is BobLee taking the year off? I thought for sure he'd have 10 posts in by now over the scrimmage fest up north. I'm waiting to hear how solid the squad is this year....

As Judge Smails would say, "Well, we're waiting..."

Now, the look on Smails face as he said that is a chuckle fest. Image

Boblee announced his retirement. Apparently moving on to bigger and better things. What those could be in comparison to this is a mystery.

As expected BSM struggled offensively up in Duluth, managing to score just one goal in three scrimmages. It will take some time and hard work before the younger forwards make the adjustment to the faster speed at the varsity level.

Also as expected the goaltending and defense were stingy, giving up just three goals (two to Breck and one to Hill Murray). Both of these teams looked very strong - each has great individual talent AND team depth and bring constant offensive pressure.

Eastview looked very good at times as well, just not as consistent and without the kind of depth through their entire linup that Hill Murray and Breck have at this early stage.

Heard Woodbury went 3-0-1 up north including a tie of GRG. Taplin the Jr goalie played very strong according to reports.

I have to agree with OntheEdge here, scores and wins/losses in a scrimmage fests are completely meaningless. I've watched several of these over then past several years, and very few show anything. Every team takes a different approach to these, some use it as a try out, and some use them as a chance to judge younger players against the speed. And yes some play them all out with what they have, and those teams tend to stand out both good and bad. I recall last year several teams were very worried after scrimmage fests as to how they might compete, and yet ended up in the state tourney and finished well in that, and some went undefeated in scrimmage fest struggled to make the 500 mark. Could be wrong, but I'd like to hear how the play/puck movement/control of play/flow went more than scores or wins/losses.

joe, this should be a good pre-season barometer for these two strong teams, let us know how these two stack up!
