Another Way to Look at Peewee A teams Nov 3

Post by frederick61 »

This week I have added each regional tourney draw. This can be projected because Minnesota Hockey has fixed the draw based on District Seeds. For each Regional Tourney, two divisions of four teams each are set up, a Red Division and a Blue Division. A team by winning a district seed automatically is placed in a Division (or 4 team pool).

For example, if Edina wins the #1 District 6 seed, they will be placed in the East Red Division. If they win the #2 District 6 seed, they will be placed in the East Blue Division.

Using this information, the Red and Blue Divisions for each Regional Tourney can be projected. That is what I have added this week at the end of each regional description. I want to thank those that complemented my last week’s post. I do this because it is my way of keeping track of the teams during the season and I enjoy watching peewee hockey.

North Regional
The North districts this year are D11 (2 seeds), D12 (3 seeds) and D16 (3seeds). Last week, D10 was the focus for peewee A hockey in the state with two tourneys in Blaine. This week out state teams mix it up with cities teams in a Duluth East sponsored tourney.

N1-District 11
Cloquet took a tour of D6 and D8 and took two out three games, beating Eastview and Inver Grove Heights by identical 7-3 scores and losing to Burnsville 3-2. They will be in the Duluth East tourney on the weekend, drawing Edina, Chaska and Thunder Bay in pool play. Duluth Lakers kick off their season in the same tourney. They play Des Moines, city rival Duluth East, and Eden Prairie. Hermantown heads south to take a tour similar to Cloquet’s tour this past week end. They play Eastview, Inver Grove Heights and Burnsville. They also added a fourth game with Jefferson.

Still too soon to evaluate all D11 teams. Between East’s tourney and Hermantown’s tour, this week should give a fair idea where the D11 teams are at. Top two seeds here remain unchanged, #1 Cloquet, #2 Duluth East with Hermantown contending.

N2-District 12
Grand Rapids lost to Bemidji (D16) 4-3 and played Virginia. This looks to be a quiet week for the Thunderhawks. Hibbing will be scrimmaging Virginia this week. Eveleth and International Falls have yet to get rolling. The Rapids lost to Bemidji poses an interesting question. Are the Rapids weak this year or are the Lumberjacks strong? One caution is that the Rapids always start slow. The top three seeds from this district should be Grand Rapids #1 with Hibbing and Virginia battling it out for #2 and #3.

N3-District 16
Bemidji’s opening win over Grand Rapids gets them a nod at #3 this week. With all the teams in the selection process or just getting rolling, the top two seeds remain as they were at the end of the season last year with Roseau #1 and East Grand Forks #2.

The projected North Regional Tourney draw is shown below.

North Red Division: D16-#1 Roseau, D12-#2 Hibbing, D11-#2 Hermantown or Duluth East, D16-#3 Bemidji

North Blue Division: D12-#1 Grand Rapids, D16-#2 East Grand Forks, D11-#1 Cloquet, D12-#3 Virginia

South Regional
The South districts this year are D1 (3 seeds), D4 (2 seeds) and D5 (3 seeds). D1 has split their peewee A teams between D3 and D2 for regular season with regular season starting to get underway this week. D4 play began this week.

S1-District 1
Mpls Park beat Kennedy (D6) early in the week. The Storm came out storming, containing the Eagles in their own zone for most of the first period. But their defense held the Storm off the score board. The first period ended 0-0. As the second period opened, the Storm finally broke the Eagle defense, scoring twice. The second goal came on a strong shot ripped from the slot. It froze the goalie. In the third the Eagles finally came alive and scored twice, off of grit and pressure, to close the score to 3-2. But with less then five minutes to go, the Storm regrouped and added a fourth goal. The game ended 4-2.

Park played perhaps the best team in D10 in Blaine in the opening round of the Hall of Fame tourney in Blaine. The first period was scoreless with both teams having their chances. Blaine scored first in the second after three straight penalties exhausted the Storm. With about 30 seconds left, the Bengals punched in a rebound to take a 1-0. The Storm came back quickly to tie the game on a rebound drilled in from the slot by one of the Storm’s forwards. Park was nagged by yet another penalty as Blaine notched their second goal to end the period. The Bengals held a wide margine in shots on goal, but it wasn’t a one sided game. Both teams moved the puck and a fast pace was maintained for three 15 minute stop time periods. The final score was 4-1 with the Bengals getting an empty netter.

Park followed their loss by beating Rogers 8-2 and Champlin Park 3-2 to win the Consolation Trophy. The trophy game between the two Parks was one of the best played games in Blaine’s weekend of hockey (30 peewee A games played in arenas five minutes apart). Mpls Park led with 5 minutes left in the game 2-1. The Rebels then seized advantage on a breakaway to tie the game at 2-2 only to have Mpls Park score on a tip in from the point to re-take the lead 3-2 a minute later. That was the final score.

Irondale took on Spring Lake Park and lost. The seeds remain unchanged from last week. Mpls-Park will gets the #1 seed, Highland the #2. Irondale and Richfield-Washburn will battle for the #3 seed to gain the playoff shot in the South Regional. Clearly Mpls Park has established itself as the favorite in the South Region and should do well playing in D3 this year.

S2-District 4
New Prague beat New Ulm 8-1, Luverne beat Albert Lea 7-5 and lost to Owatonna 7-1, and Faribault tied Mason City (Iowa) 2-2 in opening games. Owatonna lost to Rochester 7-2 and Hopkins 4-1, but the team is challenging themselves and playing competitive against stronger competition. This district has been dominated by three teams the past few years, Faribault, New Prague and Mankato and these teams are still just getting started. New Prague has shown strength in the season so far, Faribault and Owatonna have struggled. Mankato has yet to play.

Top three seeds are New Prague #1, Faribault #2 and Mankato playing the third place D1 team for D1’s #3 seed.

S3-District 5
Buffalo gets rolling this week with their first scrimmage against St. Cloud. Mound Westonka has two games with Hopkins and Kennedy on the weekend. Crow River has two scrimmages this week with MAML and Rogers. With three seeds to the South Region, the interest level should be up for all the teams. The seeds remain with the top teams from last year with #1 going to Buffalo, #2 to Mound Westonka and #3 to Sartell or River Lakes.

The projected South Regional Tourney draw is shown below.

South Red Division: D1-#1 Mpls Park, D4-#2 Faribault, D5-#2 Mound Westonka, D5-#3 Sartell or River Lakes

South Blue Division: D4-#1 New Prague, D1-#2 Highland, D5-#1 Buffalo, D1-#3 Mankato or Irondale

East Regional
The East districts this year are D2 (3 seeds), D6 (2 seeds) and D8 (3 seeds)

E1-District 2
District 2 teams had an up and down week playing some tough competition. However, North St. Paul, the defending champion, is still an unknown at this point. They scrimmaged Hudson and play Stillwater and Forest Lake this week in their league opener. White Bear had a good week, beating Coon Rapids 5-1 early in the week and then played in the Centennial preview losing to Prior Lake 4-3, beating Jefferson 6-3 and beating Wayzata 4-3.
Roseville lost to Jefferson 4-1 and open D2 play against Tartan and Mahtomedi. Forest Lake lost to Andover 4-3 and played in the Centennial Preview, losing to Osseo/Maple Grove 6-1, Elk River 3-1, and Jefferson 4-1. Stillwater lost to Burnsville this week and played Rosemount. The Ponies play Eagan and Tartan besides the Polars this week.

Top three in this early season has to be North St. Paul #1 (champs until proven otherwise), #2 White Bear Lake (looked good in early season play) and #3 Roseville. But D2 looks balanced again.

E2-District 6
District 6 kicks of league play this week with seven games being played. Of all the D6 teams, Apple Valley will be the most tested this week when they open league play against Chaska, Prior Lake and Jefferson. Eastview, Jefferson and Burnsville entertain a second D11 team this weekend, Hermantown. Edina, Chaska and Eden Prairie go north for a tourney in Duluth

Edina beat Cottage Grove 9-0 in the opener of the Centennial Preview and followed that with wins over Centennial 2-1 and Elk River 5-1. They open their D6 league play this week against Shakopee and play games in the Duluth East tourney drawing Thunder Bay, Cloquet and Chaska on the week end. Eden Prairie lost to Osseo/Maple Grove 5-2 and Elk River 7-6 and beat Cottage Grove 8-2 in the Centennial Preview. Chaska plays Apple Valley in their opener this week.

Burnsville beat Stillwater 1-0 to start their week and beat Lakeville North 2-1 and Cloquet 3-2 to end the week. They scrimmage Lakeville North this week. Bloomington Kennedy lost Mpls Park, but then rebounded to beat Highland 4-3. Prior Lake beat White Bear Lake 4-3 in their opening game of the Centennial Preview.

The Lakers jumped to a 4-1 and held on to beat White Bear Lake in an up and down, fairly balanced game. Prior Lake has size and speed, but White Bear Lake has speed at the wings and a tough defense. The Lakers went on to lose to Osseo Maple Grove 7-1 and beat Lakeville South in the Centennial preview. They enter league play this week, playing Eastview and Apple Valley at home. Shakopee tied Hopkins.

Jefferson opened their season by beating Roseville 5-1. The Jaguars struck quickly scoring the first goal less then a minute into the game and gradually wore the Raiders down over the next two periods, taking a 2-0 lead into the final period, then breaking open the game with two goals in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Raiders came back to score at the 3 minute mark. Jefferson added a fifth goal in the last minute of play. The Raider front lines were out of sync for this game and the Jaguar goalie played strong in the net stopping some tough solo shots from close in.

Jefferson had a lake tour in the Centennial Preview, losing to White Bear Lake 6-3, tying Lakeville South 7-7 and beating Forest Lake 4-1. Edina is still the #1 seed in D6 this week and Burnsville by virtue of their wins over Stillwater, Lakeville North and Cloquet, have earned the #2 seed. Chaska has yet to get going and Eden Prairie had a down week. Prior Lake, by notching a couple of nice wins deserves an honorable mention. District 6 has only two seeds in the East Regional this year.

E3-District 8

The district still appears to be the domain of Woodbury this year, but they are in hiding. Others haven’t. Eagan tied Apple Valley and play Roseville and Stillwater this week. Lakeville South played in the Centennial preview and lost to Prior Lake, Centennial 5-0 and tied Jefferson 7-7. Lakeville North lost to Burnsville this past week. The Panthers play Farmington, Burnsville and Centennial this week.

Rochester beat Owatonna 7-2 in their first game and scrimmages Lakeville South this week. Cottage Grove played in the Centennial preview losing to Edina 9-0, Wayzata 4-0 and Eden Prairie 8-2. They didn’t pick the easy road, but it is early in the season. Cottage Grove has a good sized team that plays well as team. Their game with Wayzata was marred with too many penalties that disrupted the flow of the game. Inver Grove Heights lost to Cloquet and plays Hopkins and Hermantown this week.

The top two seeds last year in D8 went to Woodbury and Eagan. This year D8 gets three seeds, but after Woodbury, the league still looks wide open. Best guess today is Woodbury #1, Eagan #2 based on last year and beating Lakeville North this week, and ALL for #3.

The projected East Regional Tourney draw is shown below.

East Red Division: D6-#1 Edina, D8-#2 Eagan, D2-#2 White Bear Lake, D8-#3 ALL

East Blue Division: D8-#1 Woodbury, D6-#2 Burnsville, D2-#1 North St Paul, D2-#3 Roseville

West Regional
The West districts this year are D3 (2 seeds), D10 (3 seeds) and D15 (3 seeds

W1-District 3
Osseo/Maple Grove formed their team about a week before the Centennial Preview and roared through their three games beating Eden Prairie 5-2, Forest Lake 6-1 and Prior Lake 7-1. They open league play with Washburn this week and scrimmage two D10 teams, Blaine and Andover. Wayzata plays Mpls Park this week, hoping to rebound from a 4-3 loss in the last game of the Centennial Preview. They beat Centennial 8-0 and Cottage Grove in earlier games. Hopkins had a busy week tying Apple Valley and Shakopee before beating Owatonna. They play Inver Grove Heights and Mound Westonka this week.

Top three seeds in D3 this week are Wayzata #1 and Osseo/Maple Grove #2.

W2-District 10
District 10 really was the center of Minnesota peewee A hockey this week with Blaine (Fogerty) hosting the Hall of Fame tourney and Centennial (SuperRink) hosting a 12 team preview with some of the early favored teams skating against each other. In the opening round of the HOF eight team bracket play, Anoka overcame a quick Coon Rapids goal to beat the Rapids 4-1. The Tornados have a quick team that pushed the larger Rapids team hard in the first one and a half periods, then hung on to claim victory. In the second game Andover beat Champlin Park 5-4. The host of the Hall of Fame tourney, Blaine, beat Mpls Park 4-1 in the third, and best played game of the opening round. Rogers beat Spring Lake Park 7-3 in the final game of the opening round.

Centennial and Elk River were the only two D10 teams playing in the Centennial Preview. Host Centennial lost to Edina and Wayzata and beat Lakeville South 5-0. Besides beating Forest Lake, Elk River beat Eden Prairie and lost to Edina.

This week, Blaine and Centennial remain the #1 and #2 seeds. Elk River played well in the preview. The Edina game was closer then the 5-1 score indicated. The game was penalty filled and was the most poorly refereed game on the weekend. This week Elk River takes the #3 seed.

W3-District 15
The seven teams in this district are just getting going. The top three seeds remain the same from last year with Little Falls #1, Fergus Falls #2 and Moorhead #3.

The projected South Regional Tourney draw is shown below.

West Red Division: D10-#1 Blaine, D15-#2 Fergus Falls, D3-#2 Osseo/Maple Grove, D10-#3 Elk River

W Blue Division: D15-#1 Little Falls, D10-#2 Centennial, D3-#1 Wayzata, D15-#3 Moorhead

Thoughts on Centennial Preview

Post by GoGophersGuy »

Best Games:

Edina 2
Centennial 1

I thought this was the best game of the weekend as the 2nd and 3rd periods were very fun to watch. Edina held on here in this one as Centennial hit 2 posts and had a few disalowed goals in the third peroid. I look forward to seeing these two teams play down the road.

WBL 4
Wayzata 3

WBL was a strong underdog here as they held on for a 4-3 win here. The last 2 min of this game were very intense and I dont know how Wayzata didnt tie this one up. Fun game to watch and WBL won the game on a dump in shot from the blue line. WBL got stonger every game this weekend and #11 is one of the better peewees out there for WBL.

Odd score:

Wayzata 8
Centennial 0

I did not see the game here but find this score a bit odd. I know it is early but after seeing this team play well against Edina tough to think they are 8 goals away from Wayzata... I could be wrong here. Also, playing 2 games in one day this early could of had something to do with it.

Biggest Suprise:

Osseo/MG, by far the best suprise of the tourn. Went 3-0 and beat every team by a good amount. Would like to see how this team does against Edina, Wayzata, Centennial, Elk River.

Re: Thoughts on Centennial Preview

[quote="GoGophersGuy"]Best Games:

WBL 4

Your thoughts on Centennial having to play 2 games in one day have merit at this early point in the season. That also helps explain why Wayzata looked so sluggish against WBL - Wayzata had to play 3 games in 22 hours - by far the most grueling schedule of the tournament. They just didn't look like the same team as when they played Centennial fresh. OMG had all 3 of there games done before Wayzata even played one. OMG and Edina had their games very much spread out, as opposed to some of the other teams that had their's all bunched together.
