Waconia Hockey

Post by hockeyboys »

Their first game is right around the corner. How is it going? Any news on players? From what I have seen with 1st year teams - such as Highland and Meadow Brook Christian - they start their first year with JV programs. Appears Waconia is jumping right in at the Varsity level. Do they have the players to support doing this?

They are starting at the Varsity level, and they are struggling for numbers. One of the most skillful players on the squad will be an 8th grader.
They really won't have the numbers for a number of years, either. Waconia fields only one Bantam team, which is predominantly first year bantams.
The Pee-Wee ranks have some better numbers, but there is no way to gauge the dropoff rate by the time they hit high school.
It doesn't appear as though Waconia is going to be competitive for a good 5-6 years. But, at least they finally have a team to call their own.
The hockey thing in Waconia is very odd. Waconia H.S. is a 4AAAA school, for football, and they typically field 65-70+ for varsity football. For hockey, they are struggling to scrape together a team. :-k

You understand correctly. Waconia had > 50% of the joint Holy Family/Waconia squad, last year, and Holy Family does not have much to backfill with either.
Both teams will struggle, mightily, for quite awhile. ](*,)
