I hear Rosemount's '97s are just super duper. 10 returners, 9th in Fargo, and a couple of the most over-the-top dads you EVER met. You know who you are.

Please don't wreck it for your kids.

I doubt one of them could have made the Edina team last year, so don't get too excited.

I'm assuming we're supposed to say Rosemount ...

I laugh, every year, people make jokes about ranking squirt teams. My opinion, is if they keep score in the game and they play 35 games, then there is nothing wrong with asking who is the best squirt team.

To me, this is the reason that numbers of hockey players is dropping overall in the state as a whole. Way to much emphasis on competition...way too early. I believe that it scares away parents and kids from even starting hockey.

theirs nothing wrong about ranking squirts. i just think edina should be etched in at number one on every poll that way we can save time writting them on down everytime.

Everything is about competition when it gets right down to it, otherwise why is there a scoreboard?

Each one of us everyday competes in our job, trying to get ahead, make our company better than our competition. Kids go to school and they get grades which competes with all the other students......it's a fact of life.

Kids can turn a pickup game of football/hockey/soccer/baseball/playstation/Wii/coloring...you name it into a competition. With all the other things that are competitive, why is it so bad that it happens in hockey?

If you don't like it, build a small rink in your backyard so Tommy/Billy/Jimmy/Sally etc can skate and play by themselves.

Puckfan - I couldn't agree more! I don't see anybody complaining about keeping score in soccer, basketball or baseball. So why is it competition is so bad in hockey, even at the age of 9?

Competition fuels our life. It's OK to want to the beat the other guy. It's Ok to want to win. It's an instinct we all have. Where we differ is the parts of life where we want to win in and the other parts of life where we just simply want to exist and participate.

In the human race, competing for something is as natural as drinking water. If you don't learn how to fight for something as a youngster, how are you ever going to successfuly fight for something as an adult?

The next time you have some free time, go attend a local mite game in your association. As the scoreboard sits at 0-0 for the entire game despite all of the goals scored, ask the kids on the bench what's really the score. I can guarantee every one of them knows. And even though our "feel good' society tries to supress this "competitive spirit" in our young people, there is really very little we can do to alter it. It's just not how we're wired.

Nothing wrong with competition, keeping score and rankings. It is fun for those involved. The problem comes in when it means more to the parents than the kids, and the parents add to the pressure by trying to "motivate" the kid.

Nothing wrong with losing as long as the kid gave it his best and the parents support the effort, not the result. There is more to learn from losing than winning if there is the proper perspective in place.

Wisconsin Fire '98 is definitely #1 and no, I don't have a son on the team. Also, St. Michael is a very good team and not even mentioned. And finally, is Elk River #5 or #9 and who replaces one or the other?

This could be the best thing I have read on this forum.

WI Fire shouldn't be mentioned at all? This is a MN youth board and we are talking about Metro or Minnesota Squirt association rankings (I don't care if most of them are from MN). They're an all star club team out of WI, apples to oranges if you ask me. That being said, I know my kid would love to play and try to beat them.

The Edina A2 team is not even close at this time in the top 10, likely towards the bottom in a top 25 lists.

Well said! You don't see most nine year olds running into their local sporting goods store, picking up the latest rankings, and running to show dad. You do see that 9 year olds dad doing it!

I haven't seen a lot of teams but I heard that Edina and Rosemount tied at a competitive practice and Edina A2 is not doing so good. You can't rank the fire because they play in a Wisconsin league.

Is STMA St. Michael-Albertville? If so, they've come a long way in hockey.

Yes, that program has some very multi talented kids at that age group. I saw the roster this weekend in Hopkins and noticed about 5-6 kids were on their Gopher State Champ baseball team. I am more baseball myself. Their Squirt B won the Hopkins tournament with a strong field like Edina, Elk River, and Rosemount

I suppose hosting the Olympics helps. After the games are done the venues remain. I get the hockey part, but baseball? Isn't that a summer sport?

On a serious note...I pulled up a map and found Albertville. It really isn't too far out, but that was the boondocks when I was a kid. With the swelling of the Twins it is probably like Maple Grove 10 years ago or Plymouth 25.

From what I understand, that Fire team is basically the 98 Machine Team as well. All but a few players on that Machine team left their winter associations to play on the Fire.
