How to handle a Hazing

Post by 2xhockeymom »

All
I need to know how other state handle hazing with High school Hockey?

This is the situation please tell me what you think

my son is on a high school team. One boy came into the locker room, took his sticks to another locker room, then pissed on the sticks and threw them in the shower. The only reason we think he did this is because my son beat his little brother out of a spot on the team.

We notified the coach of the siutation and all he did was tell the team that Hazing would not be allowed....

What do we do?????

thanks

Go directly to the athletic director and or High School Administration. The Minnesota High School league has zero tolerance policies on Hazing incidents. Due to the incidents state wide the last few years you should recieve immediate attention from Administration.

I'm not so sure what you descibe falls under the umbrella of hazing, more like one kid just being a jerk. Hazing is usally a planned group activity, not an act by 1 individual.

That said I would also go to the AD, the AD is school administartion and can deal with hazing easier than a coach can. As said there is a supposed zero tolerance for hazing, I've seen that hold true in Austin where kids were suspended for hazing and swept under the rug in Byron where the school board thought "hazing" was a right of passage.

Good luck

Take the high road. Going to the AD to get a kid in trouble is going to do nothing for anyone involved, and it will make things really awkward in the locker room, which your son will be in. He doesnt want the rep in the room of the kid who cries to his mom and dad. No offence, what the kid did is disgusting, but your son is in hs, let sleeping dog's lie.

Agreed. You need to think more like a high school student and less like a parent.

How does your son feel about the situation? Is he intimidated by the other kid? If it were my son I'd ask for a meeting with the coach, the other kid, and his parents. Let him know you're doing him a favor by not going to the school and make sure he understands that that kind of stuff isn't going to happen again (hopefully the coach and parents will back you up). Have the boys shake hands and be done with it.

Yes you could just suck it up and let the situation ride BUT! what he did was a crime, spreading possible hepatitis C or other possible diseases this insolant jerk might have onto the cloth tape on your sons $125.00 sticks, I would call the AD and let him/her know exactly what happened and especially how badly the coach handled this, my HS coach would have benched this guy for a few days at the least.

That is some sick stuff!!...that never happened when I was in high school....not even middle school...no peeing was involved ever :?

I would surely bring it up and get it all straightened out so he knows he could have gotten in more trouble than he did.....give him one more chance before the big shots take care of it...

Yea it was gross don't get me wrong, but just retape the stick and put some soap on it. No sense in causing turmoil within your association over an isolated incident such as this. If the bad behavior continues then you should talk to your athletic director, otherwise, as has been said, suck it up it's high school.

it is high school i agree, i have been around worse and the big issues is the upper classmen need there respect this is one way to intimidate and belittle the in comers but its not worth going to the ad if you dont like it earn some respect of your own by retaliating thats how i got through it there were the kids who just took it and they got it all year but if you put up a fight or even threw a big hit or dirty dangle on a senior in practice it gave you some respect its survival of the fittest this is one way to build character and in the end at least for me it made me a couple of my best friends and better team chemistry followed the whole respect issue

Changing my message to say "yeah" to the next message. "What goes around, comes around". Can't outwardly condone the type of payback I would pursue.

Hazing went out when hockey player with perms went. This is a tuff situation, on one hand you don't want your kid to be a marked kid in the locker room. Myself I would just leave it alone for a while really no harm done, you can wash the stick off. See where it goes if it continues then I would do something. You just don't want to put your kid in a situation where he becomes an outcast. I am sure your kid is a smart kid and will figure out how to fix the problem. The old saying is - "What goes around comes around"

I still have an old Gopher hockey button that says,

"Hockey Is For Tough Guys".

Maybe I should start wearing it again.

I would have to agree with the people saying to "suck it up", I myself during my sophmore season was somewhat of a target for i couple senior class mates because i was loud and said what i wanted. After a month or so of taking their crap i had had enough and when i was slashed, and tripped by one of the guys on the ice i got up and dropped my helmet and gloves asking if he wanted to go.... considering our coach was a firm believer in allowing players to handle situations on their own and since we were outcasts from the school anyway he let it happen.. I stood toe to toe with the senior captain showing him i woudlnt back down.. after each landing some shots the coach ended up breaking us up after a bit, needless to say i earned the respect of the upper classmen.... the bullying stopped and i was part of the team... the worst thing you can do i believe is go to the School board or AD with this, think it through before you do

If the captins on the squad do their job this moron will learn his lesson. Even so I agree with you contacting the coach. If the situation ends you know you have either great captins or a well respected coach.

Suzie is right, sort of.

The two players and the head coach need to have a meeting.

If it truly is hazing, the AD needs to be involved and the kid should have repercussions (gone if playing for me).
But he coach can make that decision.

let the capitans handle it, and if they dont then have your kid kick the ass of the kid who did it.... i'd be so pissed if someone peed on my stick... no pun intended....

bury the hatchet, just tell your kid to retape his twigs and forget about it. pissing and moaning, no pun intended, will not do him or the team any good. neither will trying to fight the kid who did it, all that will do is create a divide in the locker room. it happens and if thats all that happens to him all year he should consider himself lucky. being hazed and picked on comes with the teritory of being an underclassmen, if he just shuts his mouth and takes it like a man he will earn allot of respect among the older kids.
