Huh?
Are you trying to say the pressure to play well is greater in hockey than in other sports?

Run cross-country or play baseball if your worried about playing more than one sport. there are other good sports that are good to play in with less likelihood of getting hurt.
With this kind of logic, why would anyone ever want to play football?
How about, "because they enjoy it?"
We're talking about kids. High school kids. Kids play sports, and they should.
Sure, they won't get hurt if they stick to ping-pong and croquet, but the sacrifice is obvious.

No one is saying that kids shouldn't play football during high school. All we're saying is after they commit to a college to play a specific sport, it makes sense for the college coach to want them to stick to that sport.
I don't know that you can heap it on the kids. Does anyone know an 18 year old that doesn't think he/she is indestructible? Getting hurt is the last thing on their minds, doesn't even work into the equation.
"Because you're more likely to get injured when you're playing another sport vs. when you're not. If Lucia is going to go through the effort of scouting, recruiting and offering a scholarship he doesn't want to throw all his work away because some guy gets hurt playing a secondary sport."
I will not disagree with what you are saying in your first sentence, but why is it that you are more likely to get hurt? Because you are playing a physically intensive sport to prepare for a physically intense sport.
Kids get hurt all the time playing hockey. So, once recruited and papers are signed, should a recruit stop doing any form of physical fitness, from football and hockey to lacrosse and soccer, that will prepare him for the sport? No, of course not. That's ludicrous to suggest. People get injured, that's part of playing those sports.
Kids should be allowed to do what they want. This is another example of a college coach trying to control the lives of his players. High school is a time for people to do what they want, when they get to college, then they should stopping taking risks that may jepordize their playing career. What ever happened to having pride in supporting your communities athletics and playing sports that you want to play to help your community win? That is what used to happen and it sounds like Zach Budish had pride in his community and helped 3 athletic teams, not just played hockey. He sure doesn't sound like he regrets playing football, just because he happend to get injured. I'm sure he wishes it didn't happen, but it did and he is trying to comeback from the injury. I bet he is more glad that he helped lead the team to a conference championship and 10-1 season in his junior year.
All I'm saying is let the kids pick, really, it is about the kids, even at the college level.
I think just as many kids get hurt playing hockey as they do playing football. If they have a chance to play other sports, they should. It gives their bodies a chance to use other muscles and it gives them a chance to get excited about playing whatever sport they are in. It is stupid for kids to play only one sport. Congrats to those who are 3 sport athletes. Your a dying breed.
And, what about Joe Dziedzic, he played 3 sports and was able to go on and have a pro career!
I agree it should be about what the kids enjoy doing while in high school which obviously happens one time in your life. Lucia is just looking out for himself and the university and not taking in stride what the kid might want to do. Lucia himself was a 3 sport athlete. I spoke with a gentlemen yesterday who went to school with him. He knows that playing football and whatever sport in high school is going to keep the kid sharp and in shape for him but he would rather gamble on that and have the kid not do anything until he gets them. Most kids will not keep as sharp and in shape unless they play those other sports. They find other things to do wtih there time which is not good either.
